Beachgoers in California were stunned by a giant hoodwinker sunfish (Mola tecta) washed ashore at Doran Regional Park in Bodega Bay. The six-foot-long, three-foot-wide carcass weighed up to two tons.

A rare species identified in 2014, Mola tecta usually dwells in the Humboldt Current and can cross warm belts by diving deep. Rangers alerted wildlife agencies; the fish did not survive.
