Foreign Policy: Recycling Old Ideas Won't Avoid Another Jenin
Israel has concluded its recent military operations in the occupied West Bank, but the focus on strengthening the Palestinian Authority (PA) to maintain peace overlooks the fact that the PA is weak by design. The PA serves as a subcontractor to the Israeli occupation, suppressing its own people. The PA cannot do Israel's bidding and represent Palestinians at the same time. This highlights the reality of Israel's commitment to an apartheid regime and the need for a reframing of the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Epoch Times: Jobs Prints Lower Than Expected, Core Inflation Remains Stubborn
June's nonfarm payroll employment increased by 209,000, with the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at 3.6%. However, job revisions from April and May resulted in 110,000 fewer jobs than originally reported. Some sectors, like professional and business services and retail, saw declines in job creation, while government-related industries maintained strong employment growth. The economy contracted faster according to the Institute for Supply Management's Purchasing Managers Index, but the ISM Services report showed expansion, particularly in low-wage sectors. Job openings decreased in May, and building permits and housing starts saw mixed results. Personal income and outlays increased slightly, with inflation rates showing some decline. The Federal Reserve's rate pause in June was shown to be a divided decision in the Fed minutes, and the bond market reacted to the unexpected increase in new jobs reported by ADP. Overall, the jobs report fell short of expectations, and the economy may be slowing. Core inflation remains high despite efforts to target a 2% rate, and the Fed may hold rates steady until more data is available. However, a rate hike is still expected in September. Small and medium-sized businesses may face challenges due to tighter credit and lending standards. The author expects the terminal rate to reach around 6% and predicts a potential recession in the fourth quarter with stagflation. Second-quarter GDP is expected to print at around 1.25-1.75%. The views expressed in this commentary do not constitute investment advice and are based on July 7, 2023, data.
