GB News: Shipwreck that once held 'eyewatering treasure' and sunk after infamous pirate raid discovered off Madagascar coast
Researchers have identified an 18th-century shipwreck off Madagascar, believed to be a Portuguese treasure ship captured by pirates in 1721. The ship, which was en route from Goa to Lisbon, was laden with a significant amount of treasure, including diamonds and gold, valued at over $138 million today.
The investigation, led by the Centre for Historic Shipwreck Preservation, uncovered 3,300 artifacts, suggesting the ship was involved in long-distance trade within the Indian Ocean economy. The unique artifacts linked to Catholicism indicate its pirate capture was distinct from other vessels in the region.
