Five Years Later, the Hagia Sophia Remains Occupied by Islamic Supremacists
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan marked the fifth anniversary of the Hagia Sophia's conversion back into a mosque, calling it a "liberation." The Hagia Sophia has a complex history, transitioning from a Christian basilica to a mosque, then a museum, and back to a mosque, symbolizing the clash of faiths and empires.

The 2020 reconversion has reignited global controversy, seen by many as an act of Islamic supremacy and a loss of Christian heritage. Erdoğan's framing of the move as a restoration of Turkish sovereignty has strained international relations, particularly with Greece and Russia, while resonating with Islamic nationalists.
