Former Department of Energy official Sam Brinton, who identifies as non-binary, was on a taxpayer-funded business trip when a high-profile baggage theft occurred. Brinton traveled to the Nevada National Security Site and flew from Washington, D.C. to Las Vegas on July 6, 2022. Months later, Brinton was charged with grand larceny for stealing a suitcase containing jewelry, clothing, and makeup. The Functional Government Initiative criticized the use of taxpayer dollars for criminal activity.
Brinton, who made headlines for their non-binary gender-fluid identity in a senior DOE position, traveled to the Nevada National Security Site for a meeting and site visit. The DOE did not comment on the purpose of the trip. Brinton stayed at a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip and the total cost of the four-day trip was approximately $1,951.50. Brinton pleaded no contest to the grand larceny charges and avoided jail time, but was ordered to pay restitution and fees. Sen. John Barrasso called for an internal investigation into the DOE's security clearance process.
