James Wellesley, 56, was arraigned in Brooklyn federal court for allegedly running a $99 million money laundering scheme through a fake wine company, Bordeaux Cellars. He and co-defendant Stephen Burton, 58, are charged with wire fraud and money laundering, claiming to have brokered loans backed by nonexistent wine collections.
From June 2017 to February 2019, they solicited investors, promising regular interest payments and custody of high-value wine that did not exist. Prosecutors allege they used incoming funds to pay off earlier investors and for personal expenses. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison.
