The Epoch Times: Pence Wouldn't Pardon Jan. 6 Defendants, Says Trump Indictment Would Send 'Terrible Message'
Former Vice President Mike Pence announced his intent to run for president in 2024 while speaking at a town hall in Iowa on June 7. He criticized President Joe Biden and distanced himself from former President Donald Trump on topics such as the January 6 breach of the Capitol, Russian President Vladimir Putin and government spending. Pence also stated that he would not pardon any individuals charged in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump has suggested he will pardon some individuals. Pence supports handling Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents without issuing an indictment.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also running for president in 2024, similarly plans to be "aggressive" in pardoning individuals who he believes are victims of weaponization or political targeting. DeSantis believes that the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation have become "weaponized" and stated that he will have people look at all cases when he takes office. He also acknowledged that in some cases, individuals "may have a technical violation of the law." Pence's approach to current issues differs from Trump's, but he did support Trump regarding how his probe into classified documents is being handled. Polls show Trump as the frontrunner, followed by DeSantis and Pence.
