China is accused of undermining freedom of expression in Australia after trying to block a speech by the leader of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, Penpa Tsering, at the National Press Club in Canberra. Beijing demanded the invitation be rescinded, saying Tsering was engaging in separatist activities and disregarding China’s position and concern. However, the National Press Club refused, saying its decision was independent of stakeholders. Some Australians called on their government to use Magnitsky-style sanctions against Chinese Communist Party officials responsible for human rights violations in Tibet.

Australia Reports Lowest Quarterly Economic Growth Since September 2021
Australia’s economic growth slowed to 0.2 percent in Q1, down from 0.6 percent in the previous three months, driven by household spending cutbacks on discretionary expenses. Although public and private investments were the major driver of economic growth, the household saving-to-income ratio fell to its lowest level in 15 years at 3.7 percent, reflecting a bleak outlook for household budgets. Unit labour costs increased by two percent in Q1 and 7.9 percent in the 12 months to March, raising concerns over the impact on interest rates, according to ANZ Bank, which predicted that the Reserve Bank will likely implement further rate hikes.

More Businesses Leaving California for Better Opportunities in Other States
California businesses are leaving the state for better opportunities in other locations due to high taxation and a lack of a business-friendly environment. Reasons include high taxes, high rent prices, overcrowding, environmental conditions and the impact of government restrictions during the pandemic. California Mexican-based company Cacique announced last month that it will be moving its headquarters from California to Texas, trend that has been seen with other companies including Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle, Charles Schwab, CBRE, Toyota, and Tesla. The top destinations for many companies relocating are Nevada, Texas, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and Florida.
