The Epoch Times: New Study Shows Widely Used Sweetener Contains Chemical Compound That Can Damage DNA
New Study Shows Widely Used Sweetener Contains Chemical Compound That Can Damage DNA
Sucralose, a widely used sugar substitute in products such as Splenda, may contain trace amounts of a chemical known to cause DNA damage and gut health concerns, according to a study from North Carolina State University. Sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic, meaning it breaks up DNA, and also damages the gut's lining, making it 'leaky', the study showed. It has a toxicological concern threshold of 0.15 micrograms per person per day, and trace amounts of it can be found in off-the-shelf sucralose, even before it is consumed and metabolised. Researchers are urging a safety review of the sweetener, which is used worldwide as a sugar substitute.
