Spectator USA: Is Mike Pence Don Quixote?
Is Mike Pence Don Quixote?
The weekly Thunderdome podcast delves into the 2024 Presidential stakes, discussing Chris Christie's and Mike Pence's chances against Donald Trump. Pence's defense of the Constitution may be a more significant obstacle for Trump to handle in a debate setting than Christie, despite the latter's reputation for contention. In other news, Tim Scott may be the likeliest candidate for the "not Trump-DeSantis" lane, but Vivek Ramaswamy has been bashing away at Governor Ron DeSantis, leading pro-DeSantis influencers to defend the governor. Meanwhile, the White House may have cause for concern with RFK Jr. polling at 20% among Democrat-leaning voters. Gallup reports that social conservatism is at its most popular level in over a decade, particularly among Republicans and middle-aged adults.

WATCH: Josh Hawley's Epic Grilling of Biden Nominee on Hypocrisy of D.C. COVID Restrictions
Biden nominated former solicitor general Loren AliKhan for United States District Judge for the District of Columbia. However, she faced tough questions from Republican senators, including Josh Hawley, about her defense of discriminatory COVID restrictions on religious gatherings, despite Mayor Muriel Bowser allowing massive BLM protests. Hawley pressed AliKhan on her lack of scientific evidence for her argument and refused to support her nomination as a result. This highlights the slippery slope of stepping on people's rights and discrimination.

DeSantis Responds to California Threatening Him With ‘Kidnapping Charges’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for threatening him with "kidnapping charges" over Florida's decision to fly migrants to Sacramento. DeSantis argued that sanctuary jurisdictions are one of the reasons for the current immigration problem because they have endorsed and agitated for open-border policies. Newsom responded by posting a California law that spells out the potential kidnapping charge he could leverage. DeSantis has sent migrants to Democratic "sanctuary" states and cities several times, including Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, where they were quickly turned away.

Newsbusters: PolitiFact Defends Target for Backing Group Pushing Secret Child Gender Transitions
PolitiFact Defends Target for Backing Group Pushing Secret Child Gender Transitions
PolitiFact fails to rate a true claim by The Daily Wire and Fox News that Target is funding GLSEN, an activist group promoting concealing child transitions from parents, likely because they support this policy. GLSEN directs schools not to disclose any information that may reveal a student’s gender identity to others, including parents or guardians, without the student's authorization. Critics argue that schools and educators should not keep information about a student from parents or guardians. The Daily Wire and Fox News are factually correct, but PolitiFact won't give them a true rating due to their support for a policy that readers of those outlets oppose.

Gavin Newsom Calls for Constitutional Amendment on Gun Control
California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposes a 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution, with the goal of ending the nation's gun violence crisis while leaving the Second Amendment intact. However, it is unclear how he can restrict the right to bear arms in a proposed amendment while leaving the Second Amendment "intact." Newsom endorses the idea of a convention of the states, which requires two-thirds of the states to call for this amendment, but several states have already called for it to ratify conservative proposals. Conservatives and left-wing groups are divided on the prospect.

Exclusive -- Mike Pence Aims to Defy Conventional Wisdom in 2024: ‘This Country Is in a Lot of Trouble’
Former Vice President Mike Pence is taking some big risks with his 2024 presidential campaign, aiming to defy the conventional wisdom on issues like entitlement reform, abortion, and foreign policy. He's also challenging the notion that the 2024 GOP primary is a two-man race between his former running mate, former President Donald Trump, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Despite not being the top contender in current polls, Pence believes the race has not even begun and is confident in his chances to win over GOP voters.

Pence is running on platforms that deviate from conventional political wisdom, including advocating for entitlement reform, fiercely protecting the right to life, and taking a strong stance in support of Ukraine against Russian aggression. Despite history being against him, Pence is undeterred and believes it's his responsibility to try to bring about conservative change and victories on election day. He's betting that Americans will rally behind his unconventional ideas and take a principled position on these key issues. (, , )

The American Spectator: Pat Robertson, RIP

Televangelist Pat Robertson has died aged 93. He will face criticism from both the secular Left and some conservatives for his controversial views. Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, became a Republican due to the Democratic Party's pro-abortion stance. However, despite being ecumenical and intellectual, he faced criticism for his views on topics such as Alzheimer's, which he said equated to "’til death do us part." Despite this, he founded several groups, including Regent University and Operation Blessing, which have helped people suffering around the world.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Robertson claimed an angry God had permitted them to occur because the US had embraced abortion, homosexuality and secularism. In 2005, he called for the assassination of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and suggested the 2010 Haitian earthquake was God's punishment.

Was Edward Enninful’s Vogue too ‘woke’ for Wintour?
Edward Enninful, the former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, was recently replaced and given a vague "promotion" to "editorial advisor of British Vogue and global creative and cultural advisor of Vogue." Enninful pushed for inclusivity and diversity during his tenure, but reportedly clashed with Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Many saw Enninful's Vogue as too political and lacking in its original appeal to wealthy, fashionable women. His progressivism brought early success, but proved unsustainable over time.

Ohio firefighters find 118-year-old time capsule buried in fire station: Here's what was inside
Ohio firefighters found a hidden time capsule while looking for an old fire department cornerstone. The discovery was made in the city of Marion, where officials had been researching their department's history, by removing the cornerstone from a retired fire station that had been scheduled for demolition. Archaeologists were called in to remove it after they discovered the box was deeper than they expected. Inside were badges dating back to a 19th-century fireman's championship, four newspapers from July 1905, a letter from then fire chief, McFarland, and other mementos. The city plans to place an item from the capsule in a new one that will be buried in the forthcoming new fire department.

Carboplatin, cisplatin drug shortages impacting treatment of US cancer patients: ‘Unacceptable situation’
Cancer patients in America are being forced to modify their treatment plans or try other medications due to a shortage of the chemotherapy drugs carboplatin and cisplatin. The situation has been described as "unacceptable", with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) stating that medical professionals are having to "scramble" to find alternatives. While the NCCN said in a recent survey that patients were still receiving "life-saving care", some medical facilities are under additional strain. The Food and Drug Administration is allowing temporary imports of foreign-approved versions of cisplatin to counter the shortage.

Wildfire smoke is causing bad air quality in the US and Canada, but those who've kept their cars properly maintained with a regularly replaced cabin air filter can breathe easier. Despite nearly every new vehicle featuring a cabin air filter in the climate control system, a recent survey by NAPA found only 26% of respondents thought they knew if their car had one or where it was located. Automotive cabin air filters typically require regular replacement and cost $15 to $20. Tesla and Mercedes offer HEPA filters as factory equipment on some of their electric models, which use extra large filters installed under their hoods.

North Carolina man shocked 3 times with Taser, died from ‘sudden cardiac arrest’ during police confrontation
The autopsy report for Darryl Tyree Williams, who died after being repeatedly shocked with stun guns during an arrest, reveals sudden cardiac arrest in the setting of cocaine intoxication, physical exertion, conducted energy weapon use, and physical restraint. Several officers are currently on administrative leave, and the State Bureau of Investigation submitted its case file to Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, who will determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. The family of Williams called upon officials to fire officers and charge them in his death, claiming that "Darryl’s death was a direct result of excessive and unreasonable police force."

In addition to citing cocaine and the chemical contained in marijuana found in Williams' blood, the autopsy report also detail that obesity and "hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease" contributed to his death. Williams had a history of an unspecified irregular heartbeat, as well as tobacco, marijuana, and cocaine abuse. The Raleigh Police Department has previously said that officers were trying to arrest Williams for possession of a controlled substance after they found a folded dollar bill with white powder in his pocket, but body and dashboard camera videos released by police showed Williams protesting that he didn't do anything and warning that he had a heart problem.

A tiny, ancient hominin may have been surprisingly clever
New research suggests that Homo naledi, small-brained hominins who lived at the same time as early humans, created rock engravings and ceremonially buried their dead. H. naledi's brain was half the size of that of a typical human brain relative to its body, and the species had earlier been assumed to be an early member of Homo or a late member of Australopithecus. However, the new findings undermine the idea that intelligence evolved with larger brains permitting more complex behaviours. Instead, H. Naledi’s burial practices indicate the ability to reason about abstract ideas like mortality and identity, while rock engravings suggest the symbolic thinking that some believe led to language and high-level cognition.

Field & Stream: Monofilament vs Fluorocarbon: Which Should You Use When?
Monofilament vs Fluorocarbon: Which Should You Use When?
Monofilament and fluorocarbon fishing lines are visually identical, but their differences are significant in terms of properties and price. Monofilament is the more affordable option with good abrasion resistance, but often coils due to memory and has stretch that can hinder long-distance hook sets. Fluorocarbon, on the other hand, disappears underwater and is very strong and abrasion resistant, but is stiffer and more difficult to tie knots. Fluorocarbon's ability to vanish makes it ideal for finesse presentations and casting dead baits, while monofilament's suppleness allows for better knot strength and easier knot tying.
