Fox News: US Space Command prefers Huntsville, not Colorado Springs, for headquarters, Alabama senator says
US Space Command prefers Huntsville, not Colorado Springs, for headquarters, Alabama senator says
The top general for U.S. Space Command reportedly told Sen. Tommy Tuberville that Huntsville, Alabama is the preferred location for its new headquarters, not Colorado Springs, Colorado. This decision has become entangled in a political fight between Tuberville and the Defense Department over reproductive health care for service members, and is jeopardizing the promotions of hundreds of military officers. The decision to place the headquarters in Huntsville was made by former President Donald Trump, but has not been officially implemented by the Biden administration.

The basing decision for U.S. Space Command has become part of a larger political fight. Sen. Tuberville is fighting for the command to be based in Huntsville, which would bring lucrative jobs to his constituency. However, proponents of Colorado Springs argue that moving the headquarters would set back its progress at a time it needs to move quickly to match China's military space rise. Meanwhile, Tuberville has used a Senate privilege to essentially stop any military officer nominations or promotions until the Defense Department rescinds a policy that would allow and provide support for service members to seek reproductive care outside their current assignment area, thus having significant trickle-down effects on military families.

Albania is no longer a bad Balkan joke
Edi Rama, the former basketball player and modern artist, may be leading Albania towards a brighter future. As the country's longest-serving head of government and leader of the Socialist party, he has brought Albania closer to becoming a stable democracy. However, corruption and emigration remain significant problems that need to be addressed. Rama models his party on Tony Blair's New Labour, and he aims to create a civility in Albanian politics that has been absent since the dictatorial regime of Enver Hoxha.

Breitbart: Pat Robertson, Religious Broadcaster Influential in GOP Politics, Dies at 93
Pat Robertson, Religious Broadcaster Influential in GOP Politics, Dies at 93
Pat Robertson, a religious broadcaster who founded the global Christian Broadcasting Network and helped make religion central to Republican Party politics in America through his Christian Coalition, has died at the age of 93. Robertson was a familiar presence in living rooms across America for more than half a century, and was known for his "700 Club" television show and televised pronouncements of God's judgment. His enterprises also included Regent University, an evangelical Christian school in Virginia Beach, and Operation Blessing, an international humanitarian organization. His death was announced by his broadcasting network, and no cause was given.

Robertson sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1988, pioneering the strategy of courting Iowa's network of evangelical Christian churches. He finished in second place in the Iowa caucuses, ahead of Vice President George H.W. Bush. His masterstroke was insisting that three million followers across the US sign petitions before he would decide to run. Robertson later endorsed Bush, who won the presidency. Pursuit of Iowa's evangelicals is now a ritual for Republican hopefuls, including those currently seeking the White House in 2024. Robertson started the Christian Coalition in Chesapeake in 1989, which became a major political force in the 1990s, mobilizing conservative voters through grassroots activities. By the time of his resignation as the coalition's president in 2001, his impact on both religion and politics in the US was "enormous."

American Thinker: San Francisco’s doom loop accelerates
San Francisco’s doom loop accelerates
Park Hotels & Resorts Inc. has ceased making payments for its $725 million mortgage on the Hilton San Francisco Union Square and the Parc 55 San Francisco, surrendering the two properties to the lender. The owner has decided to material reduce their exposure to the San Francisco market due to the city’s major challenges. The management are closely related to the takeover of downtown (and other neighborhoods) by bums and junkies.

The most optimistic scenario is that the hotels will be purchased at a fire-sale price and kept as 4- or 5-star hotels. The other scenario being that they will become housing for undocumented immigrants and junkies, while further depressing their tourism, convention, and office business markets. A fiscal crisis for the city is obviously ahead and San Francisco could recover if the voters become fed up with the decline of their city and the cessation of city services and subsidies upon which they have become reliant. Unless that happens, the current situation is a doom loop.

Rigorous new study of studies finds that lockdowns, not COVID, caused the destruction
A new meta-study by economists Steve Hanke, Lars Jonung, and Jonas Herby, titled "Did Lockdowns Work," has concluded that state-enforced lockdowns caused the vast majority of the destruction in the past few years, not COVID itself. An updated, peer-reviewed meta-analysis of the study, examining 22 relevant studies, found that lockdown policies "represent the biggest policy mistake in modern times" and were a "global policy failure of gigantic proportions" that failed to significantly reduce deaths while imposing substantial social, cultural, and economic costs. The study has been criticized by some, including epidemiologists, for not including enough medical opinions.

Fox News: China reportedly reaches secret, billion-dollar deal for Cuba spy station targeting US: 'Sends a message'
China reportedly reaches secret, billion-dollar deal for Cuba spy station targeting US: 'Sends a message'
China has reportedly struck a billion-dollar deal with Cuba to build a listening station targeting the U.S. on the island nation less than 100 miles off the American mainland. The report, citing officials familiar with the matter, says "China has agreed to pay cash-strapped Cuba several billion dollars to allow it to build the eavesdropping station, and that the two countries had reached an agreement in principle." The move comes amid soured diplomatic relations since February's Chinese spy craft controversy.

U.S. officials have described the intelligence on the planned Cuba site as "convincing", as it will enable China to conduct signals intelligence, which may include monitoring a range of communications, including emails, phone calls, and satellite transmissions. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, who sits on the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and the Chinese Community Party, claims that the move is a message from China to the U.S. to show the growing influence and power of the Chinese Communist Party in the world.

Strategic Ambiguity Approach Towards Taiwan No Longer Relevant: Cybersecurity Expert
The US policy of strategic ambiguity towards Taiwan is no longer relevant, says John Mills, former director of cybersecurity policy & strategy at the Department of Defense. China has made its intention of using force against Taiwan clear; the Chinese regime considers Taiwan part of its territory. Mills stresses the need for the US to be "crystal clear" with China that there will be "no invasion, no coercion" and that it must respect Taiwan's sovereignty. The National Defense Authorization Act authorizes up to $10bn in security assistance to modernize Taiwan's security capabilities and requires a whole-of-government strategy to counter Chinese influence and coercion targeting Taiwan and countries that support Taiwan.

The bill also amends the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act, allows for potential sanctions to be imposed on foreign officials that have violated human rights, and prohibits broadcasting licences in Canada for states recognized by Parliament as involved in acts of genocide.

'Allies'? Extensive Poll Finds Majority of Europeans Unwilling to 'Take America's Side' in War With China
A recent survey found that over 6 in 10 Europeans oppose backing the US in a war with China, while only a quarter would "take America's side." The majority of Europeans neither see China as a power with a desire to undermine or challenge Europe nor do they agree with the "democracy versus autocracy" framework promoted by the Biden administration. Despite the "no limits" partnership that China and Russia announced in February 2022, the survey showed that the European perception of China remains neutral--at worst.

Cuba Cozies Up to Russia as Report Claims Island Will Host Chinese Spy Base
Communist Cuba has claimed to be a “key partner” to Russia and is looking to increase commercial investments with the country to keep its financial system afloat. However, reports suggest that China has made a deal with Cuban counterparts to establish a spy base in Cuba in exchange for payment. Officials have declined to provide further details. Cuba has long maintained ties with Russia due to its economic dependence during its time in the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, Cuba has been a member of China’s Belt and Road Initiative but has made repeated requests for China to invest in the country in order to maintain its grip on the island.

The Economist: A huge Norwegian phosphate rock find is a boon for Europe
A huge Norwegian phosphate rock find is a boon for Europe
Norge, an Anglo-Norwegian company, has discovered at least 70 billion tonnes of phosphate rock, vanadium, and titanium in southwest Norway, which could supply current global annual demand for over 50 years. These strategic minerals are newly relevant as Europe and America try to relaunch their chip and solar industries while relying less on unreliable suppliers like China, South Africa, and Brazil. Norge’s greener mines will be a high priority for Norway’s government, Europe, and America, falling under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act and an American strategic-minerals scheme.

The cost of climate rules is turning Germans away from the Greens, making them less popular than the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party. Meanwhile, Albania is transitioning from a 'bad Balkan joke,' and is led by Edi Rami, a former basketballer and modern artist. In Kherson, Ukraine, tens of thousands of homes have been flooded after the Kakhovka dam's collapse.

The Epoch Times: ‘Constrained’ Home-Purchase Activity: Mortgage Applications Register Fourth Consecutive Weekly Drop
‘Constrained’ Home-Purchase Activity: Mortgage Applications Register Fourth Consecutive Weekly Drop
Mortgage applications have fallen for the fourth straight week amid elevated rates, according to a recent report by the Mortgage Bankers Association. For the week ended June 2, the volume of mortgage loan applications fell by 1.4%, although refinance activity was down 42% compared to a year ago. The reduced purchasing power due to higher mortgage rates and the ongoing lack of for-sale inventory has “constrained” home purchase activity, while the share of home purchases made in cash is at the highest level in nine years, with 33.4% of all US homes purchased this way in April 2023.

Experts predict mortgage rates will ease down by the end of the year, but not by much. The chief economist at the National Association of Realtors expects rates to fall close to 6% by the end of 2023 and below 6% in 2024. Meanwhile, Yun also criticized the Fed’s aggressive rate hikes for hurting the real estate market. While pointing out that inflation has “calmed down,” Yun said that “rents are still accelerating.” Mortgage payments are now more expensive than rent in some places, for example, in San Jose, California, buying a home is 165% more expensive each month than renting it.

Mickey Moniak came off the bench to deliver a three-run double in the sixth inning and made game-changing defensive plays in the outfield as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on June 7. Despite not playing in the last five of the Angels' last six games behind other outfielders like Mike Trout, Moniak took the field when his chance finally came and didn't disappoint. His defensive plays were especially notable, saving the Angels from runs with a terrific catch in the stands and a diving catch to end a potential Cubs rally. This win marked the Angels' first three-game winning streak in two weeks.
