National Review: Trump Is Wrong about ‘Woke’
Trump Is Wrong about ‘Woke’
Trump dislikes the term "woke" and wants to police its use, but it's become a useful term for social-justice excesses. Conservatives took the word over and began applying it to cultural radicalism largely involving issues of race and gender. "Woke" has replaced "political correctness" as a term, but the concepts aren't the same. The word and what it denotes are going to stay at the center of the GOP debate, though, because Republican voters are rightly alarmed by the cultural direction of the country.

BBC Backlash Over Non-Binary Mastectomy Storyline
Criticism has been levelled at the BBC over a “Casualty” episode featuring an early-evening storyline involving the programme’s first non-binary character, named Sah, talking with paramedic colleagues about the implications of a double mastectomy the character is due to undergo. Campaign group Safe Schools Alliance accused the broadcaster of being too accommodating towards “ideologues” within the organisation rather than consulting experts on child development. Nicola Williams of female rights charity Fair Play for Women has used Freedom of Information legislation to demand all details of external groups who took part in discussions relating to the storyline. Many social media users applauded the portrayal.

The BBC has been criticised over a storyline in a recent episode of the television series “Casualty” in which its first non-binary character, Sah, discusses an upcoming double mastectomy with colleagues, including paramedics. Writing on Twitter, campaign group Safe Schools Alliance described the episode as a “new low” for the broadcaster, while Fair Play for Women, a female rights charity, has used Freedom of Information legislation to seek details of all external groups consulted as part of discussions leading to the episode. Many social media users welcomed the storyline which starred non-binary actor Arin Smethurst, who has said the role has helped in discovering their own sexual identity.

Euromaidan Press: Kakhovka dam explosion poses no threat to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – Enerhoatom
Kakhovka dam explosion poses no threat to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – Enerhoatom
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is not directly affected by falling water levels in the Kakhovka Reservoir after Russia destroyed a dam. The plant's cooling pond is separated from the reservoir, and the paused reactors are not generating heat, preventing water from evaporating. The reduction in the reservoir's water levels does not pose a critical threat to the Zaporizhzhia NPP, but the station must be freed and put in order. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called an emergency meeting of the National Security and Defense Council after Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric station on 6 June 2023.

The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station was completely destroyed and beyond repair, triggering an evacuation, and resulting in flooding in several areas. The ZNPP remains under Russian control and is not producing electricity, consuming power to cool the nuclear reactors. The International Atomic Energy Agency is negotiating demilitarization and a safety zone around the plant, which Russian forces continue to block access to.

Fox News: Ukraine accuses Russia of destroying Kakhovka dam, evacuation orders issued as 'ecological disaster' warned
Ukraine accuses Russia of destroying Kakhovka dam, evacuation orders issued as 'ecological disaster' warned
The Kakhovka dam and hydroelectric power station in southern Ukraine controlled by Moscow were blown up in an attack, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents due to the threat of massive flooding along the Dnipro River. Both Ukrainian authorities and Russian officials are blaming each other for the damage and ordered the evacuation, citing an "ecological disaster." The destruction could affect the supply of drinking water to Crimea and deplete water levels upstream that help cool the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The Epoch Times: Ukraine, Russia Blame Each Other for Destruction of Critical Dam as Thousands Evacuated Amid Widespread Flooding
Ukraine, Russia Blame Each Other for Destruction of Critical Dam as Thousands Evacuated Amid Widespread Flooding
Russia is being blamed for the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine which holds the same amount of water as the Great Salt Lake in Utah and prompts mass evacuations of several villages. The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, blamed "Russian terrorists" for the destruction of the dam. He added that they must "be expelled from every corner" of Ukraine, with European Council President Charles Michel also suggesting that Russia was responsible. Russian officials have instead claimed that Ukrainian military strikes destroyed the hydraulic valves of the hydroelectric power station. Water levels are currently at "critical levels."

National Review: The Angels of Omaha
The Angels of Omaha
The Allied campaign Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day, was the most significant day of the 20th century. The five landing beaches of Normandy were designated by Allies, and the Germans were misled into believing Calais would be the target, creating an effective deception. The American troops on Omaha Beach faced disastrous conditions, with over 1,000 dead in just a few hours and chaos reigning. Amidst the tragedy, a company of roughly 150 men led by Captain Joseph Dawson managed to land on the beach where there was a tiny gap between the intense German gunfire, which eventually led to turning the tide of battle. Dawson, Lieutenant John Spalding, and Sergeant Philip Streczyk are credited with turning the bitter defeat into a glorious victory on D-Day.

Red State: Why the Writers Guild of America Strike Will Fail
Why the Writers Guild of America Strike Will Fail
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is demanding higher pay and featherbedding, but the studios have reduced content and labor expenses due to streaming economics. Streaming media is not profitable and the major streamers have already maxed out subscriber bases. The Disney streaming business is still losing money despite a subscriber base of over 200 million across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has reached a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), and the WGA will likely settle for similar increases in compensation. The dumbest argument on picket signs is that writers can't earn a living in the current environment.

The Epoch Times: Retailers Warn Net Zero Recycling Costs Will Hike Household Bills to £4 Billion
Retailers Warn Net Zero Recycling Costs Will Hike Household Bills to £4 Billion
UK retailers have warned that a net zero green levy which charges retailers and manufacturers for councils recycling their packaging will increase household bills. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme would cost customers up to £4bn p.a. when it is rolled out next April. The BRC criticised the government’s Resources and Waste Strategy, which includes the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme and a proposed Deposit Return Scheme, as an “unambitious and ineffective strategy that will do little to improve our abysmal recycling rates”. Single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks and certain polystyrene cups and food containers will be banned from sale from October this year.

'I like who I am': Albino Asian family with world record for most albino siblings tells their story
Six siblings from Coventry, England, who hold the world record for the most siblings with albinism, open up about their tight bond and journey to self-acceptance. They experienced bullying growing up but are now proud of themselves and work to educate people on their condition. Albinism is caused by a lack of melanin, a pigment that gives color to the hair, skin, and irises of the eyes. Both parents have to carry the specific gene defect in order for it to be passed to their children. The siblings all suffer from impaired vision but help one another and are incredibly resilient and comfortable in their own skin.

The Epoch Times: Toxic Chemicals Used to Make Plastics Found in Many OTC Medications
Toxic Chemicals Used to Make Plastics Found in Many OTC Medications
Phthalates, commonly found in household and personal care products, are also frequently used in pharmaceutical drugs to enhance effectiveness. However, phthalates have been linked to health issues such as reproductive and developmental problems, hormonal disruptions, and cancer. Even over-the-counter drugs, such as proton pump inhibitors, commonly contain phthalates, which can have adverse effects on human health. While regulatory agencies in other countries have banned or restricted the use of many types of phthalates, the U.S. FDA has some oversight in the regulatory process for phthalate-containing drugs but may not have a full understanding of potential health risks.

Research has found a strong correlation between phthalate exposure via pharmaceuticals and higher breast cancer rates in women. Phthalates, known for their estrogen-mimicking properties, can influence the occurrence of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. While the U.S. FDA has oversight in the regulatory process for phthalate-containing drugs, certain phthalates are not approved for general use as inactive ingredients. Manufacturers are not obligated to disclose a complete ingredient list to the public due to patent protection laws, leading to potential unawareness among consumers of whether a drug contains phthalates.
