New York City Mayor Eric Adams proposed paying New Yorkers to house asylum seekers in their homes. With the city struggling to find beds for the thousands of migrants coming into New York, Adams suggested a compensation scheme that would cover local residents who host asylum seekers. Although religious leaders agreed to house migrant men overnight at 50 places of worship from December, Adams's private residence plan may encourage more migrants to come to New York City. National Review: The Destruction of the Ukrainian Dam Is an Atrocity, not a ‘Disaster’
The destruction of Ukraine's Kakhovka dam, which caused catastrophic flooding in surrounding towns and cities including the regional capital of Kherson, was most likely a deliberate act of Russian sabotage and not an accident. Despite Russian-backed officials in Ukraine insisting that all was well, the US government has intelligence that is leaning toward Russia as the culprit of the attack. The destruction forecloses on the prospect of a Ukrainian river-crossing operation across the Dnipro into southern Kherson Oblast, thus buying Russia's beleaguered forces in Ukraine more time and space to attrite Ukrainian attackers. The flooding has compounded an already terrible humanitarian disaster in Ukraine, introduced chemicals into the waterway, and has exposed the hollowness of Moscow’s claim on Ukraine’s land and people.
