Human traffickers have benefited from the chaos in Libya and smuggled migrants through the country’s border with six adjacent countries, then packed them into ill-equipped vessels, leading to high risk journeys across the Central Mediterranean Sea route to Europe. Most of the migrants were rounded up from trafficking warehouses, leading many destitute and desperate migrants seeking a better life in Europe to face forced labor, beatings, rapes, torture and other crimes against humanity, practices usually rife in government-run detention centers.
