Fox News: Thousands of migrants detained at Libyan border in ongoing crackdown, activists report
Thousands of migrants detained at Libyan border in ongoing crackdown, activists report
Libyan authorities have rounded up thousands of mostly Egyptian migrants, who were detained in raids over the past two days in the border town of Musaid and other areas in eastern Libya, as part of the state's ongoing crackdown on migration. Activists have claimed that more than 6,000 migrants have been held at the border, awaiting deportation to their home countries. Human traffickers have benefited from the chaos in Libya and smuggled migrants through the country’s border with six adjacent countries, then packed them into ill-equipped vessels, leading to high risk journeys across the Central Mediterranean Sea route to Europe. Most of the migrants were rounded up from trafficking warehouses, leading many destitute and desperate migrants seeking a better life in Europe to face forced labor, beatings, rapes, torture and other crimes against humanity, practices usually rife in government-run detention centers.

Binance’s Token BNB Plummets 8% In Biggest Drop This Year After SEC Sues Crypto Giant
Binance cryptocurrency, BNB, fell nearly 9% after SEC sued the company for allegedly running an illegal operation in the US. This marks the biggest one-day drop so far this year in the cryptocurrency industry as US regulators continue to crack down on crypto companies. The SEC alleges that Binance and its founder misused customers' funds, in some cases diverting them to an entity Zhao owned called Sigma Chain that conducted “manipulative trading” to inflate the volume of trading on the crypto exchange.

Left-Wing Academic Cornel West Announces Presidential Bid
Left-wing philosophy professor Cornel West announced he will run for president as a candidate for the People’s Party, with a platform prioritizing ending poverty by providing a “living wage” for all, health care for all, and guaranteed housing. He also plans to fight mass incarceration and climate change. He has also discussed the need for pushing progressive politics beyond domestic issues and into international issues like war.

Jamie Raskin Refuses To Give Details About What Was In FBI Document Alleging Biden Corruption
A document allegedly showing Joe Biden engaged in a criminal bribery scheme is reportedly being used in an ongoing investigation, according to the House Oversight Committee’s Chairman, James Comer. The committee's ranking member, Jamie Raskin, didn't refute the allegations and called the document "second-hand hearsay." Raskin wouldn't go into the details of the allegations contained in the document, in part to protect the FBI source, who he said could be revealed if he disclosed details. He also said that he wasn't aware of any ongoing investigation surrounding the document.

Comer Announces Contempt Hearings For FBI Chief Over Alleged Joe Biden Bribery Scheme
FBI Director Christopher Wray faces contempt of Congress hearings over a bureau document alleging President Joe Biden's involvement in a foreign bribery scheme. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced the move after reviewing an internal FBI report alleging Biden received payments from a foreign national while vice president. Comer provided details of the document at a press conference, stating that it was provided by a "trusted, highly credible informant" who has given information to the FBI for over a decade. The document was initially withheld from lawmakers but was granted after Comer threatened contempt proceedings against Wray.

Fox News: Utah bus company accuses Nevada of declaring war, stranding passengers in alleged regulatory dispute
Utah bus company accuses Nevada of declaring war, stranding passengers in alleged regulatory dispute
Salt Lake Express, a Utah-based bus company, is in a legal dispute with Nevada transportation officials over allegations of evading regulation by making brief trips across the California border during journeys to Las Vegas, where they had no customers. Nevada officials are concerned about the potential risks to passenger safety due to the company's failure to comply with state requirements for inspections and maintenance records. The conflict over routes has landed in U.S. District Court in Reno. The company's lawyers say they've been forced to seek federal protection because "the Nevada Transportation Authority has declared war on Salt Lake Express."

Salt Lake Express’ emergency request this week to order Nevada to return its impounded mini-bus and issue a temporary injunction, prohibiting the state from continued harassment, was recently denied. The company claims that they are in compliance with federal regulations and not subject to the Nevada Transportation Authority's oversight. The company is not picking up any passengers in Truckee or Death Valley where the disputed routes are located, and they have spent years trying to convince Nevada that imposed regulations are unnecessary and illegal. Nevada's attorney general, Aaron Ford, is maintaining that the authority "has not treated Salt Lake Express unfairly in any way."

Pundits Circle the Wagons around Biden after On-Stage Fall
Media outlets downplay concerns about President Biden's age and fitness for office after he falls at a graduation ceremony. A New York Times article reveals that officials limit his public appearances and suggest scheduling them between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to help him cope with his age. However, MSNBC's Joy Reid dismisses concerns as attempts by the right to undermine Biden. In other news, Rolling Stone reports a controversy between furries and Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, after a convention decides to ban minors due to new legislation. Finally, media misses include Daily Beast executive editor Katie Baker calling Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis a "Walmart Melania" and a Washington Examiner article that incorrectly describes Trump's stance on late-term abortions.

The Epoch Times: Winners and Losers in Republican National Committee’s 2024 Debate Rules
Winners and Losers in Republican National Committee’s 2024 Debate Rules
The Republican National Committee has announced qualifications for primary debates, requiring candidates to garner 40,000 national contributors and poll above 1 percent in three national polls or two national polls and a state poll. Some candidates, such as outsider Vivek Ramaswamy, have already qualified, while establishment politicians Chris Christie and Mike Pence may struggle to gain grassroots support in time. The RNC's decision to require candidates to provide lists of financial backers may be targeted at former President Donald Trump, who has a significant number of loyalists who will vote for him even if he declines to debate. Fewer candidates may lead to more substantive debates, but Democratic Party presidential candidates are unlikely to hold any debates at all.

National Review: CNN Commentator Describes Nikki Haley as ‘White Governor from the Deep South’
CNN Commentator Describes Nikki Haley as ‘White Governor from the Deep South’
Former Democratic representative Bakari Sellers criticized Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley for not removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol sooner following a mass shooting in which nine black churchgoers were killed. Sellers called Haley a "white governor from the Deep South" during a CNN town hall. However, anchor Kaitlan Collins corrected Sellers, stating that Haley is of Indian ancestry and is the first woman of color running for president. Haley has previously served as governor of South Carolina and is currently polling in third place among Republican candidates.

During her town hall discussion, Haley criticized Republican frontrunners Trump and DeSantis for their stance on entitlement reform and proposed raising the retirement age as a solution to financial problems with social welfare programs. Haley has been vocal about the need to address systemic racism in the United States and is running for president as a Republican candidate, currently polling in third place.

FBI Fails to Hand Over Document Alleging Biden Bribery Scheme; Republicans to Initiate Contempt Proceedings
Republicans are threatening to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings against FBI Director Christopher Wray if he does not release an unclassified document alleging that Joe Biden engaged in a criminal bribery scheme with a foreign national when he was Vice President. The FBI has confirmed that the document exists but has refused to hand it over to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin and the White House have disputed the credibility of the document, describing the Republican investigation as a “silly charade” to harm the president. Republicans argue that the document is credible and comes from a highly trustworthy informant and will advance contempt-of-Congress proceedings this week.

Red State: Democrats Worried That Pandering to Hispanics Will Not Work for Joe Biden in 2024
Democrats Worried That Pandering to Hispanics Will Not Work for Joe Biden in 2024
Democrats are losing Hispanic support, with Republicans gaining ground in recent election cycles. This is especially evident in south Texas congressional races, where Republicans have flipped strongholds that have been held by Democrats for 100 years. The Hispanic culture aligns with pro-life, pro-God, and pro-country values of the Republican party. Democrats are said to be pandering to minority communities and using terms like "Latinx," which many Hispanics find offensive. Word-of-mouth is important in Hispanic culture, and Republicans may have to counter the familial mindset that minorities should vote Democrat because "Republicans are for the rich Whites." Democrats need to start talking to the Hispanic community in a genuine fashion to win back support.

The Federalist Papers: California Dems Pushing Proposed New Law That Would Prevent Cops From Giving Traffic Tickets, Because Racism
California Dems Pushing Proposed New Law That Would Prevent Cops From Giving Traffic Tickets, Because Racism
California Democrats are backing a proposed bill, SB50, which seeks to prevent police from stopping and ticketing certain vehicles, aiming to address racial profiling claims. Senator Steven Bradford, the bill's sponsor, claimed that these road encounters have the potential to escalate into dangerous situations, with many seeing these proposals as a reaction to tragedies such as the death of George Floyd. SB50 universality would ensure that black Americans are not the only beneficiaries of these procedural changes. Additionally, by passing the bill, local authorities would be empowered to enforce Vehicle Code violations, risking public safety in the hands of non-peace officers.

The Ukrainian soldiers wearing Nazi patches has been reframed as "Russians pounce" rather than acknowledging the reality of neo-Nazi militias in Ukraine. Ramaswamy wants the West to recognize Russia's territorial gains and pledge to not absorb Ukraine into NATO to stop Russia from further aligning itself with the Chinese regime in exchange for Russia leaving its treaty and joint military agreement with China. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, the top Republican candidate, has recently underscored that he could leverage personal friendships with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a peace deal in just 24 hours.

Gen. Keane raises alarm on Biden's 'conciliatory' responses to China: 'Not how you deal with this'
Retired four-star Army general Jack Keane criticized President Biden's "conciliatory hand" approach to China after a warship came close to a U.S. destroyer in the Taiwan Strait. Keane believes Biden is stuck in Obama-era foreign policy and shouldn't offer "overt gestures" to Beijing amid heightened bilateral tension. China's Defense Minister recently said that war with the U.S. would be an "unbearable disaster."

The U.S. military released video footage of a close encounter between a Chinese navy ship and an American destroyer in the Taiwan Strait over the weekend. The Chinese ship cut sharply across the path of the USS Chung-Hoon, forcing it to slow down to avoid a collision. The U.S. and its allies consider these waters to be international, while China considers them to be an "exclusive economic zone." The incident comes amid heightened bilateral tension and the U.S. government's criticism of China's policies towards Hong Kong and Taiwan.

US, UK naval ships chase away Iranian boats from 'harassing' merchant vessel in Strait of Hormuz
US and UK naval ships responded to a distressed merchant ship navigating through the Strait of Hormuz after it was "harassed" by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Three boats approached the ship armed with troops. The US Navy's USS McFaul and the UK Royal Navy's HMS Lancaster arrived on the scene within the hour with HMS Lancaster sending helicopters for assistance. The merchant ship continued without incident. The Strait of Hormuz is a major international trade route where Iran has been asserting greater influence in recent years.

Another Insurance Company Stops Offering Policies to Homeowners in California
Allstate and State Farm, among others, are reducing their footprint in California's insurance market due to inflationary pressures and rising risks from wildfires. Allstate has confirmed its decision to pause the provision of new homeowner policies in California, pointing to higher costs for insuring new home customers in the state. While this change does not impact existing customers, State Farm has stated its intention to withdraw its services entirely, effective from May 27, due to the increased cost of construction, growing catastrophe exposure, and challenging reinsurance market. David Sampson, president and CEO of the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA), has called for modernization of California's insurance market and a more flexible regulatory framework that considers increased risk from wildfires and droughts.

Walgreens in crime-ridden Chicago keeps almost no inventory on public shelf, forces customers to order most items from kiosk
Walgreens has remodeled a store in downtown Chicago so that the overall shopping experience is more convenient. Aisle after aisle of towering shelves have been replaced with just two low-rising shelves filled with the "essentials." "Non-essentials" are kept hidden and customers must use kiosks to order these items. Despite Walgreens spin, many news outlets have suggested that the store was revamped to prevent theft. It is reported that least expensive items in the store which are not "typically shoplifted" are labeled "essential." Walgreens has marketed the new store concept as a way to ease the shopping experience with signs like "let us do the shopping." However, the new store model has been described as weird. The shopping experience requires two employees, monitoring the area where shoppers may roam freely and the prices are incorrect on the self-checkout machines. Walgreens denies that the store was revamped to prevent theft; however, crime in Chicago remains a real problem, which rose a staggering 19% in 2021.

Immigration enforcement activist D.A. Evidence obtained from the SPLC website shows that the group had explicitly stated that the society was not a "hate group" in 2011 but reversed its stance in 2018. The lawsuit could set a precedent, as so often conservative groups fail in lawsuits against the SPLC due to their claims not alleging that the SPLC doubted the "hate group" smear.
