Drastic increase in number of migrant children making dangerous
trek to US-Mexico border
A sharp rise in the number of children who have crossed the treacherous Darien Gap, which separates Colombia and Panama, has been reported. More than 25,000 youths have made the journey, one in five of those who have made the risky crossing. The jungle terrain is fraught with danger, with bandits and drug traffickers preying on those who pass through. Despite this, the gap remains an important transit point for those attempting to start new lives. The frequency with which children are making it into Panama through the gap is beginning to pose difficulties for the country, though.

Federal trial over OR voter-approved gun control measure begins in Portland
The federal trial for Oregon’s voter-approved gun control measure opens Monday in Portland, where a judge will determine whether the law violates the US Constitution. The legislation requires residents to undergo training and a background check to obtain a permit to buy a gun and bans the sale, transfer or import of gun magazines with more than 10 rounds. The case could last beyond the trial, with any ruling likely to be appealed, potentially up to the US Supreme Court. The Oregon Firearms Federation and a county sheriff filed the federal lawsuit in November, arguing it violates the Second Amendment.

Transgenders So Desperate to Get Out of Florida They Are Turning to Crowdfunding to Leave the State
Transgender individuals in Florida are fundraising to move to San Francisco and other cities due to a law that prohibits gender-affirming care for minors and significantly restricts access for adults. Despite a low percentage of trans individuals fundraising to leave the state, more than $200,000 has been raised since January. Multiple advocacy organizations are also supporting trans individuals, including one which provides $500 grants to trans individuals living in the South. However, critics argue that these campaigns may be politically motivated and highlight the unrestrictive nature of the law, which mandates that adult patients seeking trans health care sign an informed consent form, and even made it a crime to violate its new requirements.

Possible Strategic Enabling Moves by China to Support a Blockade of Taiwan
China is increasing its challenge to Taiwan's sovereignty by introducing drones to complement its air and naval activity and distract the United States. The Chinese regime has three available opportunities for distraction, including disabling the Panama Canal, blocking traffic through the Suez Canal, and assailing US domestic critical infrastructure. China has also been stalking the water management system for the Panama Canal and has a large, dual-use port in Djibouti that is in close proximity to Egyptian territory. The possibility of a Chinese cyber blitz on American domestic critical infrastructure is also a concern.

The appointment drew criticism due to Iran's human rights violations, military aid to Russia, and continued nuclear development.

The American Mind: Critical Times for National Conservatism
Critical Times for National Conservatism
The Edmund Burke Foundation’s National Conservatism conference in London found that Britain is more concerned with internal problems than America or foreign affairs, compared to two decades ago when the UK enjoyed criticizing matters far removed from them. There is cause for worry as British protections for free speech are much less robust than American ones, a wet blanket on public discourse. The protection of speech that challenges the status quo will become more critical as American leftists intend to restrict speech in the US in ways similar to England. Meanwhile, protesters disrupted the conference, some believing NatCons are saying things beyond the pale in English political debate.

At the conference, there was a discussion of the tension between globalism, conservatism, and nationalism, prompting the question of whether it is possible to unite the right across continents and oceans when globalism and transnationalism are considered threats to conservatism and nationalism. The lack of concern for foreign affairs at the conference, particularly concerning China, was surprising despite Britain having reconciled that it has lost its empire. At the same time, America is in a much different moment, with Americans concerned about problems beyond their borders as well as within them, particularly those presented by China. Although both nations find themselves in the same lifeboat, they are busy plugging the holes in their own side of it and cannot solve each other’s problems.

The Epoch Times: Tories Filibustering Budget Bill to Prevent Future Mortgage Payment Crisis, Says Poilievre
Tories Filibustering Budget Bill to Prevent Future Mortgage Payment Crisis, Says Poilievre
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre is delaying the committee vote on the Liberal government's omnibus budget bill out of concern that the government's Budget Implementation Act will eventually lead to a nationwide mortgage-payment crisis by 2025, with homeowners facing higher interest rates and the potential for a meltdown in the mortgage market. Poilievre believes that the federal government should aim to provide a fiscal environment that would enable the Bank of Canada to reduce its key interest rate, which has been raised in response to high inflation rates. He also called on Ottawa to cancel planned increases to the federal carbon tax, or at least to not increase it in the near future. The delay in the committee vote was criticized by Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux.

The Bank of Canada has warned of a potential increase in mortgage-payment rates in the coming years, with most fixed-rate mortgage holders set to face renewal with higher interest rates by the 2025-26 fiscal year. Average mortgage-payment rates could increase by up to 40 percent, leading to concerns about a nationwide mortgage-payment crisis, higher interest payments, and bankruptcies among homeowners. Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has urged the federal government to create a fiscal environment in which the Bank of Canada can bring down its key interest rate, thereby lowering inflation and interest rates, and called on Ottawa to cancel or delay planned carbon tax increases.

IRS Notice Urges Taxpayers Not to Fall for 'Aggressive Marketing'
The IRS has warned employers and taxpayers about scams involving the Employee Retention Credit (ERC), which was implemented during the pandemic to encourage businesses to keep employees on payroll. The agency said aggressive promoters were misrepresenting and exaggerating who could qualify for the credits, and taxpayers who improperly claimed ERC could be required to repay the credit and pay penalties. Warning signs include unsolicited calls or ads about an easy application process, large upfront fees or fees based on the refund amount, and aggressive claims before discussion of tax situations. The ERC is a refundable tax credit for businesses that paid employees during pandemic-related closures and rule changes from March 13, 2020, until Dec. 31, 2021.

Dairy Distillery can ferment this byproduct into ethanol, making it a more valuable product. The $41m factory will produce up to 2.2 million gallons of ethanol annually from 14,000 tons of permeate whey, making it a more cost-effective solution than other ethanol-based products.

Twitter’s U.S. Ad Sales Down 59% Despite Musk’s ‘Breaking Even’ Claims, Report Says
Twitter's US-based advertising sales have plummeted 59% from last year, totaling $88m in a five-week period beginning April 1. This comes after major advertisers left the social media platform following Elon Musk's takeover. Although Musk claimed in April that Twitter was "breaking even," the company estimates that its US ad revenue will be down at minimum 56% each week for May, compared to last year. In addition, Twitter's global ad revenue this year is estimated to be 28% lower than it was in 2022, at around $3bn, as Twitter's top 50 advertisers are spending less than before.

Shortly after buying Twitter, Musk tested a wide range of changes to the platform, including readministering once-banned accounts, cutting staff, and starting a subscription service for verified badges. Staff believe advertisers have been spooked by a reported rise in hate speech on Twitter and the potential for advertising next to controversial posts. Some companies like Kellogg's said they were drawing back on Twitter advertising “to monitor this new direction.” Twitter has also been plagued with controversial decisions around content moderation since Musk's takeover, leading to the exit of two executives who worked on advertising and content moderation last week.

The store offers the same products as it did previously, and the changes are simply for customer convenience. Some customers feel the retail layout is confusing, while others are pleased with the renovation making the store look better. This development follows Walgreens Boots Alliance’s recent acknowledgment that concerns over retail theft may have been overstated in 2022.
