Fox News: Hong Kong investigative journalist wins appeal in rare ruling upholding press freedom: 'Meaningful'
Hong Kong investigative journalist wins appeal in rare ruling upholding press freedom: 'Meaningful'
Award-winning journalist Bao Choy won her appeal after being found guilty of deceiving the government in Hong Kong by accessing vehicle ownership records for journalistic purposes. Choy, who was working on a documentary about a mob attack on protesters and commuters, was fined HKD6,000 ($765) for two counts of making false statements. The city’s top court overturned her conviction and said her investigative work fell into the catchall category of “other traffic and transport related matters”, recognising the importance of the city's constitutionally protected freedom of speech and press.

Quebec Town Devastated by Fishing Accident That Killed Local Man, Four Children
A Quebec man and his two children were among five killed in a fishing accident on the St. Lawrence River over the weekend. Keven Girard, 37, was found dead on Saturday evening along with four other minors, identified as his two sons and two other children over the age of 10. The group was swept off the sandbank by the rising tide while fishing for capelin near Portneuf-sur-Mer, in a popular recreational activity on the North Shore. The tragedy was felt deeply in the small, tight-knit community, who expressed their grief and sympathy on social media, with government officials offering condolences and psychosocial support.

The Epoch Times: Environmentalist Group Calls on Banks to Set 'Deforestation' Targets
Environmentalist Group Calls on Banks to Set 'Deforestation' Targets
The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is urging banks to attach "deforestation" conditions to loans that could impact farmers. The ACF claims that over 364,000 hectares of native vegetation have been cleared from 2018 to 2020, with 50% of the land cleared belonging to just 267 properties, 241 of which are owned by farmers and linked to Australian banks. The group wants banks to carry out due diligence before lending and impose relevant conditions on agribusinesses and property developers. The proposal comes after 100 world leaders committed to reversing land degradation and deforestation as part of the push towards net zero, though former premier Campbell Newman has called the proposal "outrageous".

‘My Family Is Gone’: No Survivors Aboard Plane That Triggered Supersonic F-16 Response
A plane went down in Virginia, killing all four people on board. The family of the plane's owners confirmed that their daughter and granddaughter were among the victims. F-16s were scrambled from nearby bases after the FAA lost communications with the plane, which had entered restricted airspace over Washington DC. The pilots fired flares as they attempted to contact the Cessna's pilot before the aircraft crashed into the George Washington National Forest. Virginia State Police found the wreckage on foot and confirmed there were no survivors. A preliminary report on the accident is expected within three weeks.
