The Federalist: Parents Exit Public Ed To Find Schools Aligning With Their Values
The 60th anniversary of Abington School District v. Schempp highlights the impact of losing religious instruction in public schools. In states where Bible reading was mandatory, private school enrollment saw a 12-percentage point increase between 1960-1970 following the Supreme Court decision that ruled the practice unconstitutional. Parents took it upon themselves to pay for religious instruction in private school. In contrast, there was no change in private school enrollment in states where mandatory Bible reading was already outlawed.
Parents want control over the values their children learn in schools. Schools play an important role in transmitting cultural values from religion to assimilation. Parents spend an average of $12,000 in tuition each year to ensure their child’s values match family values. The anniversary of the Schempp decision is an opportunity to reflect on what parents care about, what animates school choice decisions, and how mutually acceptable values are lived in a public education system. School choice policy adoptions reflect the apprehension parents feel about the current public school system.
