Fox News: New Hollywood bill introduces safety guidelines following fatal 'Rust' shooting
New Hollywood bill introduces safety guidelines following fatal 'Rust' shooting
New safety legislation aimed at addressing on-set accidents, particularly those involving firearms, is set to be signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom. The new guidelines come after the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Alec Baldwin's "Rust" last year. The safety measures will require all prop masters and armourers to be trained to handle firearms and to have a state permit. A safety advisor will also be mandated to conduct a risk assessment and be present on set during production. The bill is expected to be one of 20 budget-related bills Newsom will sign this week.

The new safety requirements regarding firearms are part of a wider package of legislation, which also includes extending the film and TV tax credits for five years, including allowing studios to receive "refundable" credit payments if their credits exceed their tax bills. However, the tax credits also depend on new diversity requirements authored by Democratic lawmakers. Part of the credits will be based on meeting production diversity targets and providing job training programs in community colleges focused on students of colour. The state film commission will also be required to add a member with expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
