The Epoch Times: Promise for Renters' Rights to Be on National Agenda
The Australian federal government has rejected a proposal from the Greens to introduce caps on rent increases, saying there is “overwhelming evidence” that they do not work. The Greens blocked a $10bn bill that would have created a Housing Australia Future Fund, which was intended to help establish 30,000 affordable and social housing properties within five years. The Greens withheld their support for the bill due to concerns about the lack of renters’ rights protections within it. Housing Minister Julie Collins has stated that these will be on the agenda at an upcoming meeting of national leaders. The federal government has been advised that it may be able to trigger a double dissolution election over the matter.
