Townhall: The Humanitarian Crisis At Our Southern Border
The Humanitarian Crisis At Our Southern Border
Biden administration's solution to the border crisis is replacing the Border Patrol chief, but enforcement of the law and policy changes are needed. The surge in illegal immigration has tripled, resulting in a humanitarian disaster. Unlawful entries are still high despite a press release claiming a 70% reduction. Human trafficking and drug smuggling have also increased. The U.S. government is subsidizing criminal activity by foreign drug cartels and helping them spread their distribution networks. The new Border Patrol chief is a 27-year veteran, but he's only one man, and policy changes are necessary.

Townhall: Joe Biden Is Not OK
Joe Biden Is Not OK
President Biden's quirky aphorisms and non-sensical statements raise concerns about his mental acuity. From his inability to articulate simple ideas without notes to his confusing statements about gun control and building railroads across oceans, the president's comments often lack coherence. Even White House aides couldn't explain Biden's recent "God save the queen" comment. While some may consider his comments endearing or folksy, others worry about his fitness for office. There is no fact-checking or accountability for the president's erratic statements, and his decline in mental acuity is becoming increasingly evident.

Townhall: The Unmissable Liberal Tilt of the 'Fact-Checkers'
The Unmissable Liberal Tilt of the 'Fact-Checkers'
Conservatives on Twitter are mocking CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, who focuses more on fact-checking Republicans than President Biden. CNN's apparent tilt in targeting raises questions about their independence, with some accusing them of being paid by the Democrats. Similarly, PolitiFact has been criticized for evaluating conservatives more harshly than liberals, such as Ted Cruz being falsely labeled more often than Elizabeth Warren. Overall, the media's fact-checkers have been accused of showing a liberal bias, with Chuck Todd exemplifying this trend by asserting that Republicans lie six times more than Democrats.

Brazil: Court Mulls Banning Jair Bolsonaro from Politics over Election Integrity Comments
Brazil’s top electoral court began a trial against former President Jair Bolsonaro accused of abuse of political power and misuse of the media, allegedly spreading misinformation about Brazil’s electoral system. If found guilty, Bolsonaro may be prohibited from participating in the 2026 presidential race. Both parties have a 15-minute time limit to present oral arguments, followed by the Electoral Public Ministry issuing their opinion.

Modi to Congress: India-U.S. Ties Are the World's 'Defining Partnership of This Century'
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed Congress as part of his US tour, discussing democracy, Russia-Ukraine relations, healthcare, and the environment, amongst other topics. Modi reinforced the importance of good relations between India and the US and spoke about India's economic growth. He also made humorous comments throughout his speech, making nods to Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Despite the majority of members attending the speech, a few left-wing members, primarily from the "Squad," boycotted it in protest of Modi's alleged record of repression and violence. However, Modi later met with President Joe Biden.

Breitbart: Russia Enthusiastic About BRICS Expansion -- but Not for France
Russia Enthusiastic About BRICS Expansion -- but Not for France
Russia has expressed its support for expanding the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) economic bloc to include new members, but not France. French President Emmanuel Macron had requested to attend the upcoming BRICS summit in South Africa as a guest, but Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said it would be “inappropriate”. Although Ryabkov indicated BRICS had been talking about expanding its membership, it is unclear if any such applications have been processed yet. Observers suggest that BRICS may worry about diluting its influence by admitting too many new members or potential sanctions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

U.S. Economic Officials Are Poised To Take Center Stage In China Ties As Dictator Controversy Fades
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen may play bigger roles in U.S.-China relations, as high-level meetings aimed at stabilizing the relationship created fresh tension. Investment agreements by US companies are being seen as a sign of American firms attempting to reduce ties with China. Military tension between the two nations has reached new heights with the addition of geopolitical rivalry.

Forbes: Warren Buffett Gets Chinese Assist On Big Japan Bet
Warren Buffett Gets Chinese Assist On Big Japan Bet
Warren Buffett is doubling down on Japan, purchasing additional shares in all five trading houses, upping his average ownership to more than 8.5%. The Oracle of Omaha shocked the Tokyo establishment in August 2020 with splashy investments in five old-economy companies, and grabbed 5% stakes in stodgy “sogo shosha” trading houses: Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi, Mitsui and Sumitomo. Investors are de-emphasizing China because they're worried about China's economy, and they're investing in Japan as they want to continue with their Asian exposure.

The “Buffett effect” is putting Japan in the global spotlight for all the right reasons. The Nikkei Stock Average’s powerful rally is dwarfing gains in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Japan offers a unique mix of economic stability and a bevy of undervalued cash-rich companies. However, the Kishida era that began in October 2021 has raised Japan’s economic game in no notable way. The government needs to step up the pace of economic upgrades to give Buffett and peers representing the biggest of the big money reasons to bet aggressively on Japan.

The Epoch Times: Northern Territory Considers Replacing ‘Uncompetitive’ Mining Royalties Scheme
Northern Territory Considers Replacing ‘Uncompetitive’ Mining Royalties Scheme
The Northern Territory is planning to replace its current mining royalty scheme with a new ad valorem-based royalty scheme, which is based on the underlying value of extracted assets. The new scheme aims to attract more mining investments while delivering “investment certainty” and economic benefits for the Territory, especially in regional and remote areas. Royalties from the mining industry are the biggest source of income for the NT, having contributed more than 41 percent of the territory’s income in 2019-20. The proposed scheme is part of the NT’s goal of being a $40 billion economy by 2030, which includes speedy development of new mines, streamlined regulatory processes, and development of a new rural-based workforce.

According to a December 2022 report by the NT’s Mineral Development Taskforce, royalties are expected to fall significantly after 2030, when the territory’s two large mines are expected to close. Immediate strategic actions need to be taken to sustain revenue past 2030, which includes changing the existing royalty scheme to the new ad valorem-based royalty scheme. The proposed scheme calculates royalties based on the value of the mineral extracted or sold, compared to the profits-based scheme that deducts a range of costs before calculating royalties. The NT government has opened the proposed scheme for public consultation, which will be held until Aug. 4.

The Epoch Times: Cursive Writing to Be Reintroduced in Ontario Schools This Fall
Cursive Writing to Be Reintroduced in Ontario Schools This Fall
Cursive writing will be reintroduced as a mandatory part of the curriculum for Ontario elementary schools starting in September. Education Minister Stephen Lecce cites research that shows cursive writing is a critical life skill that helps young people to express themselves more substantively, think critically, and express themselves authentically. The new language curriculum also includes a renewed focus on phonics to help boost reading instruction. Critics argue that the changes are vast and rushed, and are calling for a minimum two-year implementation period.

The Epoch Times: Federal Justice Minister Orders New Trial for Two Men Convicted of Murder in 1974
Federal Justice Minister Orders New Trial for Two Men Convicted of Murder in 1974
David Lametti has ordered a new trial for two Indigenous men, Brian Anderson and Allan Woodhouse, who were given life in prison in 1973 by an all-white jury and have always maintained their innocence. Both men submitted applications for a criminal conviction review by the federal justice minister with the support of the organization Innocence Canada. The basis for the decision was unspecified new evidence. If Lametti's proposed bill is approved, it would establish an independent commission to speed up the review process, which currently takes between two and six years and is decided by the justice minister.

The Epoch Times: Sensitive US Navy Equipment Detected Missing Sub's Implosion on Sunday
Sensitive US Navy Equipment Detected Missing Sub's Implosion on Sunday
The missing Titan submersible has been confirmed to have imploded, leading to the tragic deaths of the five-man crew who were attempting to explore the Titanic wreckage. The US Navy first detected the implosion soon after the Titan went missing on Sunday and shared this information to aid search and rescue efforts. The company operating the submersible, OceanGate, expressed profound grief at the loss of CEO Stockton Rush along with the others aboard and thanked those involved in the days-long search.

Initially, it was estimated that the five individuals on board had approximately 96 hours’ worth of oxygen supply from the time the vessel first submerged on Sunday morning. However, considering the possibility of oxygen conservation, it remains unclear how long they may have survived. Search and rescue efforts involved a concerted mobilization of ships, planes, and sophisticated equipment, although the operation faced challenges due to changing weather conditions, ocean currents, and sea states. The unexpected breakthrough came on Wednesday when the US Coast Guard announced the successful deployment of an undersea robot by a Canadian vessel, which effectively reached the ocean floor.

The Epoch Times: Lytton, BC, Sues CN, CP Rail and Transport Canada Over 2021 Fire That Razed Village
Lytton, BC, Sues CN, CP Rail and Transport Canada Over 2021 Fire That Razed Village
Canada’s Thompson-Nicola Regional District and Lytton, B.C. are suing Transport Canada, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways, claiming negligence in permitting trains to run in Lytton during the 2021 heat dome before the village was obliterated by wildfire. The suit, filed in B.C. Supreme Court, alleges record-setting heat and extreme wildfire danger should have led the railways to shut down. The complaint seeks damages related to costs of emergency response, investigation of the fire, and rebuilding of the village. A Transportation Safety Board report found no evidence that railway operations sparked the Lytton wildfire.

Footage of Violent Arrest Confronting, Says Top Cop
A man is punched and tasered during a violent arrest in Brisbane's north. Police say the man confronted an officer while under the influence after a three-car crash. Bystander footage shows the officer repeatedly striking the man before deploying the Taser. The Queensland Police Commissioner defended the officer's use of force, but an internal review will be conducted by the Ethical Standards Command. The officer had not been stood down at this stage and had previously been involved in assaulting a homeless man in 2006. The incident will be further investigated.

Breitbart: 'Yellowstone' Creator Taylor Sheridan Could Quit TV if Forced to Employ Teams of Writers
'Yellowstone' Creator Taylor Sheridan Could Quit TV if Forced to Employ Teams of Writers
Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of Yellowstone, has threatened to quit TV if he is forced to hire teams of writers by the Writers Guild of America. The guild is encouraging studios to have a minimum number of writers per show, which could lead to mandatory writers rooms. Sheridan said that if he is compelled to check in creatively with others for a story he has wholly developed, it would "probably be the end of him telling TV stories". He has written every episode of Yellowstone, 1883 and 1923, in a one-room "cabinet" he built in Wyoming.
