The Epoch Times: Fed’s Powell Warns US Budget on ‘Unsustainable Path’ in Senate Testimony
Fed’s Powell Warns US Budget on ‘Unsustainable Path’ in Senate Testimony
Federal Reserve Chair Powell told Senate lawmakers that the U.S. budget is on an unsustainable path, and policymakers need to deal with it sooner rather than later. The national debt has topped $32 trillion, with close to $400 billion borrowed in one business day following the signing of the Fiscal Responsibility Act. Inflation continues to run higher than the Fed’s goal, but the central bank chief sees a path of slowing price growth without substantial job losses. Officials expect modest increases in the unemployment rates and gradual cooling, but most of the loosening will come in the form of other ways. The futures market is mostly pricing in a quarter-point rate hike at next month’s Federal Open Market Committee policy meeting.

Supreme Court rules against Navajo Nation in Colorado River water rights case
The Supreme Court ruled against the Navajo Nation in their dispute over water from the Colorado River. The tribe had simply requested an assessment of their water needs and a plan to meet them, but the court ruled against them in a 5-4 decision.

Brennan: Durham 'Skewed His Findings,' Republicans 'Misrepresent the Facts' for Trump
Former CIA Director John Brennan accuses John Durham and Republicans of intentionally misrepresenting and skewing their findings to support the basic premise of discrediting the 2016 presidential election interference investigation. Brennan claims that the FBI did its job in trying to understand what the Russians were doing and that the Republican members of Congress are misrepresenting the facts to justify Trump's actions over the past few years.

Fox News: The stunning revelation in Durham hearing should chill us to the core
The stunning revelation in Durham hearing should chill us to the core
Special Counsel John Durham testified before Congress on the FBI’s treatment of Donald Trump’s alleged Russian collusion, revealing that the FBI was too willing to accept politically funded and uncorroborated opposition research, such as the Steele dossier. Durham stated the Clinton campaign was funneling false information to the FBI which was applied to open an investigation against Trump. Durham also noted that the treatment of Democrats and Republicans during investigations was markedly different. The discovery of such double standards goes beyond the issue about Trump’s run-in with the FBI, as it is a reflection that there is only power when there are two sets of laws in a society, most notably one for the Democrats and one for the Republicans.

Skilled Indian Workers Will Have Easier Visa Access Under Biden Plan, Report Says
Joe Biden's administration will announce plans to ease visa restrictions for a "small number" of skilled workers from India and other countries, allowing them to renew their H-1B and L-1 visas in the US without having to travel abroad. The program, which could be launched during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to the US, is expected to ease the backlog of visa applications at US embassies in India and improve US-India trade relations. Around 73% of foreign workers on H-1B visas in the US are Indian, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, progressive lawmakers are boycotting Modi's speech to Congress over human rights concerns.

The Jewish Chronicle reported that hundreds of collaborations between British and Iranian researchers have been identified, with at least 16 studies having possible military applications. Among these was research on two-stroke engines used in drones, which included the Iran-developed HESA Shahed 136 suicide drone, and a paper on fuzzy controller structures for aero engines that referred to potential military applications. A government spokesperson highlighted the UK's "more robust" academic technology approval scheme to refuse applications which compromise UK national security.

The Epoch Times: Weekly US Applications for Unemployment Aid Remain Relatively Elevated
Weekly US Applications for Unemployment Aid Remain Relatively Elevated
US jobless claims remain elevated, which may be an indication that Federal Reserve rate hikes are cooling an otherwise resilient labor market. Last week saw 264,000 US applications for jobless claims, the same as the previous week's revised number, which was a slightly higher figure than analysts had predicted. In the past three weeks, jobless claims have edged closer to 300,000 workers following a prolonged period of unemployment in the US causing concern over a significant cooling of the labor market. However, labor analysts are dubious about the rise in benefit applications after fraudulent claims in some states gave a falsely elevated impression of a resurgence in claims earlier this year.

Congressional conservatives launch effort to prevent 'endless wars' with resolution on NATO treaty
Conservative lawmakers in Congress are proposing a resolution aimed at preventing "endless wars" by requiring congressional approval for any armed conflict. The resolution would clarify the 1949 North Atlantic Treaty Organization agreement, which obliges members to defend allied nations under attack. Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy is leading the push, saying that decisions of war and peace are among the most serious any government makes and that only Congress has the power to declare war, not the president or international organizations. The resolution is supported by Republican lawmakers and conservative political groups, but some Republicans have grown wary of NATO in recent years.

Titanic Sub: Physicist Calls For End To Titanic Tourism
The search for a missing submersible that was on a tourist voyage to the wreckage site of the R.M.S. Titanic has raised concerns about the safety of such tours. Michael Guillen, a physicist and former Harvard instructor, has called for an end to undersea tourism, citing the hazards of deep ocean exploration and the need to respect the cultural significance of the Titanic's resting place. Guillen criticized the sub deployed by OceanGate, which lost contact with a surface vessel on Sunday, as "designed primarily for tourism."

Rescue workers from the US, Canada, and France are searching for OceanGate's missing submersible, which may have become entrapped along the seafloor or suffered a mechanical malfunction. Researchers face daunting challenges, including stormy surface conditions and the difficulty of searching a vast area of the Atlantic that is nearly 13,000 feet below the surface. The five passengers on board the submersible are believed to have exhausted their supply of oxygen, while near-freezing temperatures also pose risks.

Why the multiverse is eating popular culture
The concept of the multiverse has become ubiquitous in popular culture, with films and TV shows using it for both light-hearted entertainment and deeper themes such as identity and regret. Technology has made it possible to create these multiverse stories, but it also responds to a society that struggles with defining what is real and that is preoccupied with individual trauma and regret. The animated series of "Spider-Verse" movies, which explores the infinite possibilities of the multiverse, stands out for its light-hearted yet soulful storytelling.

Some commentators have argued that the retraction reveals the worrying influence of political activists on scientific research and censorship.

Why Did the UK Government Waste £4 Billion on the Innova Lateral Flow Test?
The UK's COVID-19 inquiry has begun, but it's unlikely to question why the government spent £4 billion ($5.1 billion) on the Innova lateral flow test, which has since been scrapped. Innova Medical Group, the company which supplied the test, is owned by private equity group Pasaca Capital, founded by a Chinese investment banker who has been embroiled in scandal. The Innova test was "warp-speed tracked" through regulatory approvals, winning out over 40 other tests; it was later recalled by the US FDA for not being effective. The UK government continued to spend on Innova contracts, including almost £1.2 billion for one and a half months of tests.

CDC Advisers Recommend Use of GSK, Pfizer RSV Vaccines for Adults Aged 65 and Over
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has voted in favor of recommending that adults aged 65 and over receive one of the newly approved vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The two vaccines, released by Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but some ACIP caucus members expressed concerns about the lack of trial data for high-risk groups. ACIP also approved the use of a RSV vaccine for adults aged between 60 and 64. Pfizer and GSK expect the vaccines to become multi-billion-dollar sellers, pricing them at $180-$270 and $200-$295 per dose, respectively.

Most Critical Moment for Missing Titanic Sub Is Here - Every Second Counts in Search and Rescue Operation
The search continues for the missing Titan submersible in the North Atlantic. Coast Guard officials estimate that its five passengers may have run out of air, but Rear Adm. John Mauger believes that their will to live should not be underestimated. Two vessels have deployed ROVs to help with the search. Guillermo Söhnlein, co-founder of OceanGate Expeditions, believes that the time window for the sub's rescue is longer than most people think. However, former Royal Navy submarine Cmdr. Ryan Ramsey has called the Titan's status "bleak" and that search efforts are closing to a salvage mission.

The Epoch Times: Search for the Missing Titanic Submersible Passes the Critical 96-hour Mark for Oxygen Supply
Search for the Missing Titanic Submersible Passes the Critical 96-hour Mark for Oxygen Supply
The search for a missing submersible on an expedition to view the wreckage of the Titanic has passed the critical 96-hour mark where breathable air could have run out, with rescuers rushing ships, planes, and other equipment to the site of the disappearance. On Thursday, the US Coast Guard said an undersea robot sent by a Canadian ship had reached the sea floor, while a French research institute said a deep-diving robot with cameras, lights, and arms also joined the operation. There is hope that underwater sounds might help narrow the search, but many obstacles remain, including locating the vessel and reaching it with rescue equipment before the passengers’ oxygen supply runs out.

Lost aboard the vessel is pilot Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, with his passengers being British adventurer Hamish Harding; Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman; and French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet. At least 46 people successfully traveled on OceanGate’s submersible to the Titanic wreck site in 2021 and 2022. The submersible had seven backup systems to return to the surface, including sandbags and lead pipes that drop off and an inflatable balloon, but its disappearance underscores the dangers associated with operating in deep water and the recreational exploration of the sea and space.

'Debris field' discovered near Titanic in search for missing sub, US Coast Guard says
A debris field has been found in the search for five missing ocean explorers aboard the OceanGate Titan submersible that was attempting to dive to the Titanic wreck before it vanished on Sunday. The Titan lost contact with surface vessel the Polar Prince around 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive, around 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and around 400 miles southeast of St John's, in Canada's Newfoundland. The US Coast Guard has headed up a search-and-rescue operation using high-tech buoys, robotic vehicles and aerial searches, and co-ordinated international contributions.

Search-and-rescue operations have been searching for the Titan submersible ever since it lost contact with surface vessel the Polar Prince hours into its attempt to dive to the Titanic wreck. The five explorers missing inside were the OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British businessman turned adventurer Hamish Harding, father-and-son members of Pakistan’s Dawood family Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, and former French navy officer and leading Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet. The search has involved high-tech buoys, robotic vehicles and aerial searches and has received contributions from Canada, France, the UK and the US. A debris field has been discovered, but further details have not yet been released.
