The American Spectator: Big Business and the GOP: A Spousal Tiff or Slow-Motion Divorce?
Big Business and the GOP: A Spousal Tiff or Slow-Motion Divorce?
The relationship between the Republican Party and big business seems to be breaking up. Republicans are more willing to criticize corporations and propose more legislation regulating business, while becoming less dependent on corporate donations. The reasons for the falling out include social and economic tensions, such as the objection to corporations aligning their policies with the progressive Left and the desire to restrict economic practices. Whether this is a minor dispute or a full-blown divorce will depend on the GOP's electoral coalition and the extent to which social conservatives continue to have influence in the party.

The American Spectator: Donald Trump Is the New Jimmy Stewart
Donald Trump Is the New Jimmy Stewart
Donald Trump is being silenced by the corrupt Washington political establishment, just like the main character in the 1939 movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The movie's plot, where an innocent outsider senator is framed by a corrupt political machine, is similar to what is currently happening in American politics. Joe Biden is using his Department of Justice to interfere in the 2024 election, by silencing Trump, but millions of Americans see through this corruption and support him.

The American Spectator: Don’t Let Hunter’s Plea Deal Distract From the Real Biden Problem — Ukraine
Don’t Let Hunter’s Plea Deal Distract From the Real Biden Problem — Ukraine
Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has received a sweet plea deal from his father's Department of Justice, after facing accusations of federal crimes including lying on a firearms background check. This has led to criticisms from conservatives over the two-tiered system of justice in the US. The allegations of quid pro quo corruption between the Biden family and Burisma founder Mykola Zlochevsky are only exacerbating these concerns, with suggestions of financial compromising potentially disrupting the country's U.S. foreign entanglement in Ukraine.

Teachers' union boss tapped to serve on council to advise Homeland Security Department
Teachers' union president Randi Weingarten has joined the Homeland Security Academic Partnership Council. The council will provide strategic recommendations to Homeland Security on campus safety and security, research priorities, and more. Weingarten's appointment has received criticism from some politicians including U.S. Senator Rick Scott, who tweeted that Weingarten is "the last person who should be advising anyone on school safety."

Financial Health Trumps Looks In New Partner Search: NatWest
Financial health is more appealing than physical appearance, marriage, and starting a family when it comes to finding a partner, according to a poll of 2,000 adults. 38% consider someone who is responsible with money as more attractive than someone who is good-looking (33%). Furthermore, financial and sexual compatibility are regarded as equally important for 65% of respondents, and 80% feel more positive about life when they are on top of their money. Almost half of the respondents (45%) would end it with a partner if they prioritized spending money over economic stability. The survey was commissioned by NatWest and carried out with support from dating expert Charlene Douglas.

Forbes: What The Indiana Pacers Need To Consider In Free Agency With Veteran Guard George Hill
What The Indiana Pacers Need To Consider In Free Agency With Veteran Guard George Hill
37-year old veteran George Hill provided leadership and on-court contributions to the young Indiana Pacers team last season, averaging 5.2 points and 1.9 assists per game. Hill is now a free agent and the Pacers, who inherited his Early Bird rights, have to decide whether to retain him. The team has cap space and resources to afford him but must weigh the opportunity cost of using one of their roster spots on Hill instead of using them on other assets.

Forbes: Managers Of Under-Performing Clubs Land On Hot Seat As Baseball All-Star Break Approaches
Managers Of Under-Performing Clubs Land On Hot Seat As Baseball All-Star Break Approaches
Major League Baseball teams have the opportunity to evaluate their performance during the All-Star Game break, with dissatisfied clubs typically laying blame on managers. However, so far this season, none of the 30 pilots have been dismissed. Managers usually earn seven-figure salaries, but are not paid as much as their top players. Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers is reputed to be the highest-paid pilot at $6.5 million. Any move that improves team fortunes, however, will be considered, as the Marlins showed in 2003 when they replaced Jeff Torborg with Jack McKeon and turned a mid-season losing record into a world championship.

Of the managers now active, age could play a part in their longevity. Houston’s Dusty Baker, the current dean of pilots at age 74, took five teams to the playoffs but never won a World Series ring as a manager until 2022. The next oldest manager in the majors, Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers, was lured out of retirement with a lucrative three-year contract even though he turned 68 in April and brought a losing record (2,003-2,029) to the job. Atlanta’s Brian Snitker, the oldest National League manager, hopes to celebrate his 68th birthday in October with his sixth straight divisional crown and another world championship.

Flag And Cross: Ancient Japanese Art Of Kirigami Used To Make Tape 60 Times Stronger
Ancient Japanese Art Of Kirigami Used To Make Tape 60 Times Stronger
American engineers have adapted the ancient Japanese art of Kirigami, a variation of origami, to make sticky tape 60 times stronger. Researchers at Virginia Tech wanted to test whether it was possible to make adhesives that were strong and easily removable. When using tape with a strong bond, removing it may only be possible by scraping and prying at the tape’s corners, hoping desperately that surface pieces don’t tear away with the tape. Their work could result in better options for robotic grasping, health monitoring wearables and manufacturing for assembly and recycling.
