YouTube Backs Down, Reverses Decision That Banned Claims of Fraud in 2020 Election
YouTube has reversed its policy of banning most claims of irregularities in the 2020 presidential election, including those of fraud or simple human or machine error, which had for over two years silenced debate about election integrity. The platform had removed tens of thousands of videos since instituting the policy. YouTube said it was reevaluating the effects of the policy and that while removing the content curbed some misinformation, it could have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech without meaningfully reducing the risk of violence or other real-world harm. As 2024 campaigns are underway, YouTube will stop removing content that advances false claims that widespread fraud occurred in the 2020 election.

Washington Free Beacon: IRS Pressed to Revoke CUNY’s Tax-Exempt Status Following Anti-Semitic Hate Speech
IRS Pressed to Revoke CUNY’s Tax-Exempt Status Following Anti-Semitic Hate Speech
CUNY’s tax-exempt status is being targeted by the International Legal Forum and National Jewish Advocacy Center due to anti-Semitic commencement speeches and support for Israel boycotts, potentially violating federal regulations which do not allow tax-exempt organisations to promote political ideologies. The advocacy groups believe CUNY’s promotion of anti-Israel and anti-Zionist speakers should make it ineligible for tax-exempt status under federal law due to the “systematic effort to influence public opinion and shape political discourse” and the “focused and persistent lobbying effort”. CUNY’s law school is already facing a state probe over its adoption of a resolution supporting the BDS movement, which is anti-Semitic and wages economic warfare on the Jewish state.

Fox News: Worcester, MA police sued for assault, wrongful arrest during Floyd protest
Worcester, MA police sued for assault, wrongful arrest during Floyd protest
Eleven people in Worcester, Massachusetts have filed a federal lawsuit against the police department, former city manager and others, alleging police misconduct during a peaceful George Floyd protest in 2020. The plaintiffs claim they were wrongfully arrested or assaulted while observing the protest, despite being uninvolved in violent behavior. The lawsuit further accuses the city of a coverup and improper training for crowd control and the use of less-than-lethal pepper spray projectiles. The prosecutors later dropped the charges, citing insufficient evidence.

The plaintiffs include a Clark University student who was recording the demonstration when he was beaten and kicked by several officers. Another plaintiff was punched in the face and ribs, and attacked by officers after objecting to police shoving demonstrators. The lawsuit alleges the use of unreasonable force and violations of constitutional rights, claiming that the city and police department disregarded people's right to be free from wrongful arrest, assault, and prosecution when peacefully exercising their rights. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. The Justice Department opened a civil investigation in November 2020 into whether the Worcester Police Department routinely uses excessive force or discriminates against residents based on race or gender.

South Korea: Boy Band Exo Sues Record Label to Escape 'Slave Contract'
Three members of K-pop band Exo are seeking to terminate their contracts with South Korean record label SM Entertainment due to what they describe as abusive labour practices. Baekhyun, Xiumin and Chen alleged that contract provisions would allow the label to keep them tethered to the company for as long as 18 years, while earlier this year they had been denied access to company records showing how revenue is distributed. Such so-called “slave contracts” have been the subject of previous legal disputes in the country, while the government introduced regulations in April covering child workers in the industry.

SM Entertainment denied the allegations of irregularities in financial management and contract terms, claiming that these were the work of “outside forces”. Exo has already seen three previous members leave after disputes over contracts. SM has only a small number of high-profile rivals, and was relatively unaffected by the 2019 Burning Sun sex scandal that impacted rival firm YG Entertainment.

House China Chief: U.S. Deep into ‘New Cold War’ with China
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), chairman of the US House Select Committee on China, has identified a “new Cold War” between the US and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) much like the one that took place with the now-defunct Soviet Union. Historians are unsure of when this new war started, but Gallagher believes the CCP, alongside Russia and Iran, has been waging it against the US for the better part of 10 years. One of the biggest challenges, according to Gallagher, is reclaiming economic independence and selectively decoupling from China.

Gallagher warns that Americans tend to neglect the CCP threat and take for granted the country's friendly neighbours, a luxury they may no longer have. He added that Democrats joined the committee after Speaker Nancy Pelosi last Congress reneged on a deal with Speaker Kevin McCarthy to create the same committee, but he is not convinced that all on the committee see the issue as he does. Gallagher is concerned that the current administration is divided with some believing that climate change should be the priority and that America needs to work with the CCP on this issue.

The Corner: The Economy: Where’s the Beef?
US jobs growth exceeded expectations in May, adding 339,000 new non-farm jobs, mainly in professional services, healthcare, leisure and construction. The figures were revised upwards for the previous two months. However, a survey of households revealed a 310,000 reduction in number of people employed, which pushed the jobless rate to 3.7%, whilst month-on-month wage growth cooled to 0.3%. Consumers are also feeling the strain with Dollar General and Dollar Tree predicting a squeeze on sales due to "persistent inflation" amid depleted pandemic savings. Experts speculate whether the Fed will take stock and raise interest rates further to tackle inflation.
