The Epoch Times: Poilievre in Manitoba Ahead of Byelection, Shoring Up Support Against Bernier
Poilievre in Manitoba Ahead of Byelection, Shoring Up Support Against Bernier
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and People’s Party of Canada (PPC) Leader Maxime Bernier are trading barbs while gearing up for a federal byelection in Portage-Lisgar on June 19. Poilievre, campaigning for the Conservatives, is attacking Bernier’s support for free trade with China and the not-yet-fully-formed PPC. Bernier is responding by accusing Poilievre of being “terrified” of having him as an opponent, and referring to his vote for Bill C-4, which criminalizes conversion therapy, as a “woke” policy. The Conservatives and PPC are fighting for the conservative vote in the upcoming byelection.

The Epoch Times: How the Debt Deal Will Impact the Economy
How the Debt Deal Will Impact the Economy
President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) have reached a debt deal, with the federal government set to continue functioning for the next year and a half. The agreement includes a $50 billion reduction in nondefense discretionary spending for fiscal 2024, along with withholding $30 billion in unspent COVID funds. The debt deal aims to curb federal spending, reducing the estimated federal share of spending in 2024 from 23.5% to 23.2%, but it still falls short of restoring the nation's productivity.

The Republicans in charge of a third of the government were limited in what they could accomplish with the Democrats in charge of two-thirds. However, McCarthy did achieve several concessions that included laying out a vision for the future expansion of federal spending and regulations. Despite this, past failures to control federal spending have led to increased debt, which has resulted in spending more on interest on debt than on national defense. To restore the economy, the US must engage in a major effort to reduce federal spending as a significant proportion of the economy.

Forbes: Broadway Bound: WGA Strike Solidarity Takes To Tony Awards
Broadway Bound: WGA Strike Solidarity Takes To Tony Awards
The WGA has compromised on its stance to deny a waiver for the 76th Annual Tony Awards, allowing the show to proceed in an unscripted format instead. This move has left some Broadway professionals concerned about the impact on the community, especially since the theatre industry is still recovering from the pandemic. The strike is an effort to push for a resolution ahead of the June 30, 2023 cut-off date; however, some multi-hyphenates, writers in animation, and independently financed projects fear the WGA's take on solidarity, which may make an example of them.

While both sides should remember that the strike's point is to end it and figure out a way to make content moving forward, some writers fear that the WGA will make an example of them if they try to improve their career or earn revenue. Networks and studios are complying with strike tactics, and talent is also being censored by their membership for fear that any attempt to improve their career may end up interpreted as a scab strike activity. This escalation of posturing has the potential to cause harm to peripheral stage communities that need the exposure and visibility brought about by award shows like the Tony Awards.

Fox News: DoJ sues Wisconsin town for trespassing on road-blocking Native tribe's reservation
DoJ sues Wisconsin town for trespassing on road-blocking Native tribe's reservation
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against a Wisconsin town for failing to renew access easements on American Indian tribal land. The town of Lac du Flambeau is accused of trespassing within the Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's reservation and the lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. The town and tribe have been in a long-running legal dispute, with the easements expiring 10 years ago and the tribe only offering 25-year leases while the town wants permanent easements. A hearing is set for Wednesday on a related lawsuit, with U.S. District Judge William Conley asking how the new lawsuit should factor into his management of the case.

Breitbart: 1/3 of Democrats Disagree with Laws Protecting Children from Gender Surgery
1/3 of Democrats Disagree with Laws Protecting Children from Gender Surgery
Over one third of Democrats disagree with laws protecting children from "sex-change" surgery and hormone therapy, according to a recent survey by Rasmussen Reports. The survey found that 35% of Democrats disapprove of laws preventing minors from mutilating their bodies in the name of "gender-affirmation" and an additional 41% believe that schools and teachers should be allowed to counsel students on their sexual and gender identities without parental knowledge or consent. While only 14% of Democrats strongly disagree that there are only two genders, the survey found that 23% of U.S. adults at least somewhat disagree with this statement.

The Epoch Times: Long-Term Constipation May Lead to Cancer, Massage These 4 Acupoints to Relieve It
Long-Term Constipation May Lead to Cancer, Massage These 4 Acupoints to Relieve It
Chronic constipation is a risk factor for colorectal neoplasms. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) techniques such as acupressure massage, herbal medicine, and daily diet can effectively treat constipation, thus reducing the risk of colorectal neoplasms. TCM is divided into 12 two-hour periods, and acupoints correspond to the organs in the human body.

There are five types of constipation, and each can be treated with different TCM techniques. Acupressure on various acupoints, including Kongzui, Chengshan, Shenmen, and Tianshu, can help promote bowel movements. Using prescription formulas or certain fruits in the diet can also help alleviate constipation.

Red State: DOJ Seeks Fines on J6 Defendants to Seize Donations From Online Fundraisers
DOJ Seeks Fines on J6 Defendants to Seize Donations From Online Fundraisers
DOJ prosecutors are increasingly seeking fines for January 6 Capitol riot defendants alongside their prison sentences to prevent them from financially benefiting from the events. Defense lawyers see the DOJ's requests as impairing the defendants' right to legal representation. In one case, the DOJ is seeking to recover over $25,000 that defendant Daniel Goodwyn raised through fundraising efforts. The majority of fundraising efforts take place on GiveSendGo, which has become a primary platform for J6 defendants banned from using other mainstream crowdfunding sites.

Prosecutors are seeking fines to punish financial fundraising for J6 legal defenses. Nevada resident Nathaniel DeGrave was sentenced to over three years in prison and ordered to pay a $25,000 fine. Virgina resident Markus Maly's $16,000 fundraising campaign has led prosecutors to request a fine exceeding that amount. The increasing trend of requests for fines may discourage financial fundraising for J6 legal defenses. Federal prosecutors have sought fines for some of the most high-profile defendants with the most serious charges and longer prison terms, raising questions about the government's motives and its desire to make examples out of these individuals.

Fox News: British teen gets minimum of 6 years after Islamic terror plot reported by mother
British teen gets minimum of 6 years after Islamic terror plot reported by mother
A UK teenager, Matthew King, has received life imprisonment for plotting a terror attack on the police or military, having been radicalized online during the coronavirus lockdown. King had expressed a desire to kill military personnel as he prepared to stake out a British Army barracks in east London, and expressed an interest in traveling to Syria to join ISIS. His mother's tip-off to authorities helped thwart the attack.

King had pled guilty to the preparation of terror acts between December 2021 and May 2022. The judge found that King was a dangerous offender who carried a risk of future harm to the public, despite claims by his lawyer that the defendant was on the path to deradicalization. King could be out in five years, having already served 367 days in prison. His sentencing marks the first terror sentencing in England and Wales to be televised.
