Fox News: North Carolina Senate proposes controversial measure aimed at enhancing trust in elections
North Carolina Republicans are proposing a comprehensive election measure containing provisions vetoed by the Democratic Governor, Roy Cooper. The legislation includes administrative changes to increase trust in election outcomes. The bill proposes to prohibit the use of private funds to run elections, create processes to keep non-U.S. citizens off voter rolls and stop receiving absentee ballots after Election Day. The Republicans hope that this will restore confidence to the voting process, yet critics call it a Republican strategy to discourage voting in a closely divided state.

The Epoch Times: CCP’s Youth League Clique Declines in Political Influence
A Dong, a Hui ethnic cadre, has been appointed as the first ethnic minority to head the Communist Youth League of China (CYL). The CYL faction has been losing its seat in the Standing Committee of CCP’s Political Bureau since Xi Jinping succeeded his third term as the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The CYL has been viewed as a reserve of Party leaders for 40 years, but Xi criticized the CYL central committee in 2015, leading to a budget cut, a shrinkage of leadership size, and marginalization or demotion of former Central Committee members.
CYL members’ interests are tied to the Party and the regime, and their jobs were upholding the socialist ideology. Xi, both a princeling and a leader who started his political career from the grassroots, has tightened his control over the CYL. When the CYL touted its members as “successors of Communism” on Sept. 21, 2015, Chinese real estate tycoon Ren Zhiqiang commented on Chinese social media platform Weibo saying he has been deceived by this slogan for more than 10 years. Ren, who has been openly critical of the Party and Xi’s leadership, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2020 with a corruption charge.
Fox News: El Salvador President Bukele proposes drastic reduction in municipalities to ease tax burden
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele proposed cutting the number of municipalities from 262 to 44 to reduce tax, with the proposal requiring the approval of the country’s Legislative Assembly, which Bukele's party and its allies hold a majority in. He also proposed reducing lawmakers from 84 to 60, with the conservative National Republican Alliance party seeing a clear electoral motivation behind the move. Bukele announced his intention to seek re-election last September, despite a widespread interpretation of the constitution that forbids consecutive re-election.

The Imaginative Conservative: The Most Interesting (Business) Man in the World
velop a split or adversarial relationship, they do so at great cost to the common good. In his view, the question is how to move from split religious allegiance to twin, and thereby recover from the damage that has been done. He also suggested that Christianity had something to offer when it came to creating an environment of social harmony in organized labor scenarios. As for what could be done, he suggested a return to the views of John Locke, who argued that a society is characterized by adherence to law, a law designed to protect life, liberty, and property. Lockean principles could serve as a kind of mediating ground between competing factions. As society readied itself for the technological age of mass production, Drucker felt it needed to come to grips with the totalitarian nature of these new challenges. To find harmony, one had to overcome partisanship and create alliances among the different players involved in the political economy. Drucker felt this could be done, in part, by emphasizing the ethics of personal responsibility and demonstrating how personal responsibility can lead to social harmony. By returning to stories of those who had been successful in the past, Drucker provided examples for future generations to emulate.
Euromaidan Press: Ukraine completes formation of key judicial body, unblocking reform
Ukraine's long-awaited High Qualification Commission of Judges (HQCJ) has finally been approved, allowing for the selection of judges for over 2,500 vacant positions and certifying another 2,000. The HQCJ's work was frozen since 2019 due to the Ukrainian parliament dismissing this key judicial body after President Zelenskyy took office. While civil society overseeing the reform had reservations about the integrity of two of the 16 members appointed, overall, the HQCJ formation is considered a good list and a clear victory. However, civil society advocates lamented that the final list does not include any representatives from professional NGOs known to champion change, nor did the High Council of Justice appoint Andriy Kozlov, the only candidate with previous experience in the HQCJ.
The formation of the HQCJ was one of Ukraine's outstanding tasks to move forward with EU membership. Highly demanded by Ukrainian society after the Euromaidan revolution of 2014, the renewed HQCJ responsible for selecting and certifying judges and High Council of Justice (HCJ), which makes final decisions on the appointment, punishment, or dismissal of judges, are seen as steps that can relaunch Ukraine's judicial reform. Ukraine's struggle to overcome corrupt courts illustrates why Western judicial models do not work in post-Soviet states, and despite previous reform attempts that fell short, advocacy for changes within the HCJ and the HQCJ, proposing international experts' involvement to ensure genuine reform, seem to be yielding positive results.

The Epoch Times: NATO Bolsters Kosovo Mission After Poll Sparks Clashes With Country’s Serbs
Recent clashes in Kosovo between ethnic Serbs and NATO peacekeepers have sparked tensions, with Serbia deploying its military near the border. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but this move was not recognized by dozens of countries including China, and northern Kosovo's ethnic Serbs reject the country's independence and look to Belgrade for authority. In April, local elections in this part of northern Kosovo saw ethnic Serbs boycott the polls and voter turnout of only 3.5%, which allowed ethnic Albanian candidates to take office. This led to violent clashes between Serb protesters and NATO peacekeepers after Pristina dispatched security forces to ensure newly-elected ethnic Albanian officials could assume office.

May jobs report shows strong job creation with 339,000 jobs, well above market expectations of 180,000. The unemployment rate rose to 3.7 percent with an increase of 440,000 unemployed persons. Entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as federally guaranteed student loans, supplemented employment gains in the education and health services sector. Annual real wages declined in May in all categories except for mining and logging, construction, and wholesale trade. The Federal Reserve faces a dilemma with strong jobs and low unemployment contributing to continuing inflation. We expect a rate hike in the June meeting and hope the Fed will increase its sale of assets to remove excess cash from the economy.
