The Economist: Why Joe Biden’s trustbusters have fallen short of their ambitions
Why Joe Biden’s trustbusters have fallen short of their ambitions
America’s top trustbusters, led by Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are pushing to protect the public from illegal mergers. Joe Biden’s appointment of Khan was a signal of the government’s seriousness about fighting corporate concentration, but their mixed record suggests flawed leadership and competing priorities. The trustbusters have deterred some splashy deal-making, and reframed public thinking about trustbusting, but have notched up plenty of losses, especially at the FTC. The courts and Congress may challenge the FTC’s authority, and some anticipate challenges to signature policies such as the ban on non-competes.

Forbes: A Clean And Profitable Era Dawns For Rural Electric Cooperatives
A Clean And Profitable Era Dawns For Rural Electric Cooperatives
Rural electric cooperatives power 56% of the US's landmass and serve over 90% of the nation's persistent poverty counties. A new analysis shows that they could reduce energy costs by 15-20% by adopting clean energy and could get up to 80-90% clean electricity within the next ten years, thanks to federal clean energy tax incentives. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides a 75% discount to supercharge rural clean electricity and enables cooperatives to own resources directly instead of relying on purchasing power from private companies. They can use funds from the IRA to purchase clean energy and zero emissions systems, distributed as grants, loans, or other financial assistance through the Empowering Rural America (New ERA) program. Cooperatives, their boards, their communities, and technical assistance providers need to move fast to qualify for this opportunity. The UC Berkeley study shows that the transition to clean energy could make rural electric cooperatives stronger and more reliable while lowering the cost of electricity to their customers, improving health, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Epoch Times: Former Virginia State Sen. Glen Sturtevant Projected to Defeat Amanda Chase in Republican Primary
Former Virginia State Sen. Glen Sturtevant Projected to Defeat Amanda Chase in Republican Primary
Former Virginia state Sen. Glen Sturtevant is projected to defeat incumbent state Sen. Amanda Chase and challenger Tina Ramirez in the GOP Virginia state senate primary for the District 12 seat. Sturtevant won 39.5 percent of the vote, while Chase received 37.9 percent, and Ramirez received 22.6 percent. Sturtevant, who campaigned on gun rights, opposing abortion, and support for police, is the likely favorite in the November general election against Democrat Natan McKenzie. Chase, who has served in the Senate since 2016, was censured by the Virginia Senate in 2021 for comments she made in support of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol breach. Her campaign prioritized securing the southern border, supporting parental rights, opposing abortion, providing additional health care to veterans, and bolstering Second Amendment rights.

American Thinker: La Brea bureaucracy
La Brea bureaucracy
Christopher Rufo, founder of the Documentary Foundation, has spent years attempting to close his non-profit corporation registered in California in order to set up a new corporation in Washington State. Despite living in Washington for the past 10 years, Rufo has faced persistent bureaucratic issues and claims the state is purposely making it difficult for residents to leave California. Bills have been put forward that would require former residents to pay taxes for up to ten years after moving out of California. Rufo believes punitive motives are behind the “cruel and unusual” treatment of residents, who liken the situation to being trapped in the La Brea Tar Pits.

National Review: Hunter Biden’s Sweetheart Deal
Hunter Biden’s Sweetheart Deal
Hunter Biden has pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of willful failure to pay income taxes, allowing him to avoid potential five-year incarceration for felony tax evasion charges. Additionally, he is being allowed to enter a counseling program instead of being prosecuted for possession of a handgun by a user of illegal narcotics, a federal felony carrying a potential ten-year prison term. This preferential treatment showcases the inequality of the American justice system towards prominent and well-connected individuals.

Fox News: Republicans accelerate investigation into foreign influence of US climate groups, environmental policy
Republicans accelerate investigation into foreign influence of US climate groups, environmental policy
Republican leaders on the House Natural Resources Committee are investigating the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) over its relationship with foreign donors, as part of a wider probe into U.S. tax-exempt organizations. The investigation is also aimed at foreign entities trying to influence U.S. environmental, natural resource and energy policies. The lawmakers have questioned whether LCV is in compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and may have not registered to lobby for a foreign principal as required by the law. The LCV has reportedly received millions of dollars in contributions from Hansjörg Wyss, a Swiss billionaire, and other dark money groups.

The LCV is registered to lobby on policies within the Natural Resources Committee's jurisdiction, but is being investigated for potentially violating FARA. The investigation expands to the LCV Action Fund, LCV Victory Fund and LCV Education Fund. The Berger Action Fund and Wyss Foundation, two of the anonymous dark money groups, have wired millions of dollars to LCV and other political campaigns through intermediaries. Republican lawmakers are concerned that unregistered foreign interests such as those funnelled through yet another massive dark money network of the left's foreign mega-donor, Hansjörg Wyss, have no place in manipulating U.S. tax-exempt organizations affecting America's environmental, natural resources and energy policies.

The Federalist: Elaine Brown Sold Out Black Americans To Planned Parenthood
Elaine Brown Sold Out Black Americans To Planned Parenthood
Pennsylvania is awaiting a vote on whether Medicaid can pay for abortions, a move supported by the left for "reproductive rights" and racial justice, claiming it would help black women in impoverished communities. However, almost 40% of black babies in Pennsylvania are aborted, with the problem equally bad or worse in surrounding states. The favorite of pro-life African Americans, Louisiana state Sen. Katrina Jackson explains that the abortion fight is against "modern-day genocide" as the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, had intended to control and eliminate all minority groups, with her "Negro Project" calling for introducing abortions to black neighborhoods. Elaine Brown of the Black Panther Party, who was influenced by feminists that touted abortion as good for women and allowed them to be equal to men, shifted the party's beliefs so that they supported the abortion movement.

The Epoch Times: Popcorn and Inspiration: ‘The Mortal Storm’
Popcorn and Inspiration: ‘The Mortal Storm’
"The Mortal Storm" is a classic anti-fascist film set in 1930s Germany, focusing on Victor Roth and his family and friends who are divided by Nazi propaganda around Aryan superiority. Freya, Victor's daughter, symbolizes tolerance, humor, courage and love, which are worth preserving in civilized society. The film portrays how fascism is no different from a cult that eats you from the inside out. The Mortal Storm is a rare Western European authenticity and is a stinging critique of Nazism that the Nazi ideologue Joseph Goebbels banned and prohibited viewing MGM movies in German territories. Joe Wilder, a successful investor and family man, grew disenchanted with the "shenanigans" in his workplace, realizing he had been "sucked in" by ego and wanting out. He and his family of eight pulled up, moved to Texas, despite knowing no one, and now have a farm that feeds them wholesome, unprocessed food, where they are homeschooled as biblical Christians. The family share their agrarian exploits on YouTube, teaching others that there’s a better life than the rat race.

Texas Gov. Abbott Signs Bill Restricting Minor Access to ‘Sexually Oriented Performances’
Texas has passed a law that prohibits "sexually oriented performances" - performances where the entertainer is nude or dressed in clothing that appeals to "the prurient interest in sex" - from taking place in public places, commercial establishments, or around minors. The law goes into effect on September 1, with a penalty of up to $10,000 for businesses that violate the legal boundaries. Meanwhile, drag and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have blasted the law, claiming it targets drag and LGBTQ+ individuals and that its language is vague, giving local prosecutors an almost-unlimited scope for interpretation. Some also argue that lawmakers should focus on other pressing issues rather than limiting artistic freedoms.

The Epoch Times: Decoding Social Security 'Claim' Numbers
Decoding Social Security 'Claim' Numbers
A widow is confused about the Social Security letters following her benefits. The letter "B" previously indicated wife’s benefits, followed by "D" for deceased. However, "B" now stands for widow, followed by "D" to indicate divorced. These claims symbols, known as BIC codes, are assigned alphabetically with the benefits being added to the Social Security law. The most common codes include "A" for receiving your own retirement benefits, "B" as an aged spouse on husband's record, "C" as a child on a parent's record, and "D" for widow's benefits, but there are many more.

A stay-at-home mom asks if she or her husband should claim their son as an exemption on their W-4 forms. Cheapskate recommends that the husband's W-4 be left as is, while the wife claims zero exemptions on her W-4 to ensure sufficient taxes are withheld. The IRS website has a tool to determine how many exemptions to claim .

A concerned daughter worries that her mother is spending too much on Christmas gifts and struggling to pay bills later. Cheapskate suggests taking the mom out to lunch to talk about holiday plans and instead of material gifts, creating "My Special Day with Grandma" gift certificates for quality time with the grandkids. Cheapskate also recommends the daughter encourage the mom to give her something sentimental that is also valuable and that the daughter loves.

American Thinker: Russia's War and Ukraine's History of Antisemitism
Russia's War and Ukraine's History of Antisemitism
The popular comic actor and film manager, Volodymyr Zelensky, became Ukraine's president after playing the same role in a TV series called "Servant of the People". He led Ukraine through the patriotic war against the Russian Federation and its failed attempt to prevent Ukraine from joining Europe, with Western assistance increasing the country's military capabilities. This war brought the Ukrainian people together and gave them a new sense of national identity. The tragicomedy of Zelensky's past and present as both a comic actor and a political leader of the nation is a realization of Karl Marx's observation on repetitive world-historical events.

The Epoch Times: Blinken Trip a ‘Great Propaganda Coup’ for Beijing: Analysts
Blinken Trip a ‘Great Propaganda Coup’ for Beijing: Analysts
Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent trip to China was perceived by analysts as giving Beijing an opportunity to stage a propaganda coup without bringing much benefit to America. The trip ended with Blinken holding talks with Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang, Beijing's top-ranking diplomat Wang Yi, and regime leader Xi Jinping, which Washington cast in a positive light. However, China has rejected repeated calls from Blinken to resume bilateral military exchanges, which was one of the key objectives the United States had aimed to achieve. The meetings seemed far from fruitful for those advocating for a stronger stance on the CCP, and according to analysts, the meetings were more symbolic than substantial.

Several Republican lawmakers and former Trump administration officials believe that the visit was more symbolic than substantial, and that it gave China the perfect opportunity to show its contempt for America. Even the seating arrangement appeared to be a subtle power play, with Chinese leader Xi Jinping presenting himself as an emperor lecturing Americans and imposing his image on the Secretary of State. The fact that Blinken had "accepted it without complaint" revealed the "weakness of Biden administration policy," according to Gordon Chang, author of "The Coming Collapse of China." Lawmakers believe that dialogue with China is essentially a trap and that the only way to bring about meaningful change is by taking actions and not negotiating with them.

‌Biden Calls Xi Jinping A Dictator Over Spy Balloon Incident
President Biden criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the shooting down of a Chinese spy balloon by U.S. military fighter jets during a campaign event in California. Biden stated that the reason behind Jinping's distress was not knowing the balloon existed. China had previously criticized the shooting down of their flying objects, and a second balloon was later shot down under President Biden's orders. The remarks came after Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China to discuss stabilizing US-China ties.

National Review: Fortune, and China, Might Favor the Fed
Fortune, and China, Might Favor the Fed
The Chinese economy is faltering due to problems in the property and credit-market sectors, including property-developer defaults and falling home prices. Xi's zero-Covid policy exacerbated the sector's troubles and has resulted in disappointing economic growth. China's private debt has increased rapidly, and the country is likely to experience a lost economic decade. The slowing economy is causing deflationary wage and price pressures, resulting in a depreciation of the Chinese yuan against the dollar and cheaper imports from China. The Federal Reserve should hold off on raising interest rates in light of China's troubling economic outlook .

Liberty Nation: Milestone or Millstone? US National Debt Tops $32 Trillion for First Time
Milestone or Millstone? US National Debt Tops $32 Trillion for First Time
The US national debt has surpassed $32 trillion, just two weeks after the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act was signed into law. Tens of billions of dollars in savings have only led to trillions in new debt, despite the marketing of the FRA as a way to tackle the country's debt and deficits. The reportedly "terrific plan" does nothing to address the fundamental drivers of the national debt, such as mandatory spending growth, insufficient revenues, and interest payments, which are expected to account for 40% of all revenues by 2053. Taxpayers should expect the national debt to top $50 trillion by 2033 with $1 trillion annual deficits becoming the new normal.

Retired Green Beret sounds alarm as identity politics seeps into military service: 'Just a distraction'
A retired Green Berets chief warns against identity politics seeping into the military, stating that it works against building cohesion among the ranks and detracts from the mission of protecting the country. Michael R. Carmichael, who founded Check A Vet, a nonprofit helping veterans struggling with suicidal thoughts, is also raising awareness that veteran suicides are likely higher than official statistics and that Americans need to help them. He believes that getting veterans back on a support team is crucial in reducing the number of suicides.

National Warrior Call Day proposed in bipartisan bill to fight veteran suicide
A new bipartisan bill introduced by Reps. Van Orden and Kilmer would recognize the Sunday after Veterans Day as National Warrior Call Day, aimed at preventing veteran suicides. The day would encourage Americans to call a current or former member of the Armed Forces to "have an honest conversation, and connect them with support." Both representatives expressed hope that the bill would move through Congress quickly. The rate of veteran suicides has steadily increased since 2006, with active-duty service member suicides increasing from 2019 to 2020. A recent study shows that the annual rate of veteran suicides is 2.4 times higher than the Veterans Affairs Department has reported.

Mental-health professionals have embraced social-justice mania, leading to the exclusion of conservative patients and potentially harmful therapy practices. The OTI will hold workshops for therapists and the general public and provide clinical services for those who do not feel comfortable with politicized therapy. Its resources may provide hope for people seeking support outside of the closed-minded orthodoxy of traditional therapy institutions.

An active-duty US Army soldier, James M. Kelly, is accused of firing into a crowd near a music festival in Washington state, killing two and injuring three. The shooting took place at a campground near the Gorge Amphitheater, which was hosting the Beyond Wonderland electronic dance music festival. Two Seattle residents, Brandy Escamilla and Josilyn Ruiz, were the victims killed. Kelly is charged with murder, assault and domestic violence assault. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

During Saturday night’s shooting, three people were wounded after shots were fired into a crowd. One of them, Blair Hobbs, received bullet wounds in his legs and was immediately taken to hospital. Lori Williams was hit multiple times on the right side of her face but was treated and released on the scene. Kelly and his date, Lily Luksich, were found in a nearby field next to the campground. While Luksich is out of the hospital, Kelly was arrested and is in custody. No motive for the shooting has been given as of yet.

American Thinker: New York is hiding criminal histories
New York is hiding criminal histories
New York's "Clean Slate Act" will automatically seal most criminal records, regardless of severity, making it easier for criminals to find jobs and become productive members of society. While this is a laudable goal, it puts citizens in a vulnerable position since employers won't be aware of a potential hire's criminal record. Major crimes increased 22 percent in New York City last year, and this appears to be an effort by liberals to cater to their voters and keep themselves in power.
