With a five-year sunset provision, the Preventing Emerging Threats Act needs to be renewed and updated to reflect the fact that small- and medium-sized drone attacks are now a staple of conventional, state-on-state combat that threatens the American homeland as well as military units on the battlefield.

Father's Day this year turned violent in many parts of the country, with shootings occurring in Chicago, Detroit, New York City, and Washington, D.C. In most cases, it did not appear to be a father protecting his children. In Chicago, 75 people were shot, with 14 fatalities. In Detroit, 24 people were shot, and four died. In New York City, the father of a one-year-old girl was shot dead, one of four shootings in 24 hours over the weekend. In Washington, D.C., a 6-year-old boy and his father were shot outside their car and rushed to the hospital.
