The Federalist Papers: Leftist Compassion: 'The Squad' Moves to Force Families to Literally Live with Criminals
Leftist Compassion: 'The Squad' Moves to Force Families to Literally Live with Criminals
Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley introduced a bill aimed at restricting landlords from conducting criminal background checks on tenants, proposing to remove criminal convictions older than seven years from consumer reports. The bill is aimed at "disrupt[ing] the prison-to-homelessness pipeline," but opponents believe it will expose communities to those with violent or theft histories. Eliminating this crucial screening process would punish law-abiding citizens and protect criminals, as Democrats push further left with bills that protect criminals from the law-abiding.

Leftist policies continue to favor criminals over the law-abiding. This legislation exposes communities to those with violent histories, as background checks are restricted for prospective tenants. Republicans are unlikely to pass the bill, but it's another example of the Democrats' intent on protecting criminals over ordinary people. The perverse bill is disguised as kindness but only punishes those who are forced to live in crime-ridden neighborhoods. It's another option for Americans to choose between law and order or further chaos in the upcoming elections.

French authorities raid Paris Olympic organizers' offices as part of corruption probe
French authorities raided the offices of the Paris Olympic organizers in relation to two preliminary investigations over suspected corruption, including embezzlement and conflict of interest, for contracts involving the Olympics and Solideo - the company in charge of Olympic facilities. Investigators reportedly searched the offices of the public body in charge of Olympic infrastructure, as well as the headquarters of various companies and consultants linked to the event. The investigations, opened in 2017 and 2022, respectively, raise concerns about the use of public funds and favoritism.

The Epoch Times: Uninsured Deposits in American Banks Decline By Nearly $600 Billion
Uninsured Deposits in American Banks Decline By Nearly $600 Billion
Uninsured deposits at US banks have fallen almost $600bn in Q1 2023, continuing the trend of declining deposits that began last year. The decline suggests a fall in depositors’ confidence in the banking system. Insured deposits rose in contrast, with estimated deposits growing by $255.1bn. The decline in deposits is also related to rising Fed rates, with approximately $1.4tn leaving deposit accounts since March 2022 when the Federal Reserve announced its first rate rise of the current cycle.

Out of the $1.4tn, $900bn went into money market funds while $500bn went to certificates of deposit. Contrary to the trend of falling deposits, time deposits at 22 US banks rose by almost a third in the first quarter of 2023. Though overall deposits dropped by 2.6%, deposits held for a fixed time period surged by 32%, according to analysis. The move by banks to boost time deposits is thought to be a response to the liquidity scare facing the industry. However, while they present a lower risk to banks, time deposits also carry a higher interest rate making them a financial challenge if general interest rates fall.

The Epoch Times: Saints and Sinners: Leo Tolstoy’s ‘Twenty-Three Tales’
Saints and Sinners: Leo Tolstoy’s ‘Twenty-Three Tales’
Tolstoy’s “Twenty-Three Tales” explores moral and faith themes through fables and stories, such as “What Men Live By” and “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” Tolstoy espoused non-traditional beliefs about Christian life and turned to simple, ordinary life, finding faith outside institutional Christianity. The stories offer universal moral dilemmas and Tolstoy’s narrative skill and command of language remain apparent, and some tales have the quality of fairy tales for adults, exploring the mysteries of the world and the idea that to keep vows to God is to show love and do good to others.

Spectator USA: The Oscars’ diversity quotas are dumb
The Oscars’ diversity quotas are dumb
The Oscars continue to lose viewership and importance as cinema dwindles in significance. With decreasing reverence for movies, stars, and the industry, viewers no longer gather in public places to watch films and instead opt for private viewing at home. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences now plans to nominate films for Best Picture only if they meet certain criteria, including featuring more actors from minority ethnic groups and having LGBTQ interns.

American Thinker: Trust Is Gone from Healthcare (and Washington)
Trust Is Gone from Healthcare (and Washington)

Americans have lost faith in medical institutions and health care workers due to the influence of third-party payers such as government bureaucrats and insurance executives who prioritize political advantage over public welfare. Patients are disconnected from providers and cannot make their own choices. This loss of trust extends to other formerly respected institutions such as the CDC, NIH, CMS, FBI, DoJ, and EPA, as well as most news outlets and social media, due to a perception of weaponization and partisan manipulation. The COVID pandemic has only fueled this loss of trust, with policies such as lockdowns, school closures, social isolation, and an untested vaccine viewed as harming the public.

The Epoch Times: NCA Boss Says Agency Had No Power to Prosecute Russian Cyber Gang
NCA Boss Says Agency Had No Power to Prosecute Russian Cyber Gang
The UK's National Crime Agency lacks the power to prosecute Russian hackers who targeted hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to agency head Graeme Biggar. Speaking to parliamentarians, he said he would like the NCA's jurisdiction expanded to allow it to extradite foreign cybercriminals. In February, the UK cyber-sanctioned seven Russian hackers associated with ransomware and malware deployments which affected 149 British victims, other European and US targets. The NCA has identified limitations to its investigative capabilities, and called for data theft to be criminalised and sentencing for cyber crimes to be increased.

The Epoch Times: Criminal Support Program Fails to Reduce Reoffending
Criminal Support Program Fails to Reduce Reoffending
A program offering support services to high-risk criminals in New South Wales has actually resulted in a 10% increase in reoffending rates, according to an evaluation by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. The Local Co-ordinated Multiagency (LCM) management initiative, which provides housing, drug and mental health support services, was launched in 2017 in an attempt to disrupt the cycle of crime and domestic violence. However, the programme did not significantly reduce reoffending among participants. Evaluators attributed the lack of success to the fact that the offenders were already well established in the criminal justice system.

Forbes: Chiefs Super Bowl Winner, Restauranteur Carlos Dunlap Plans To Play In 2023
Chiefs Super Bowl Winner, Restauranteur Carlos Dunlap Plans To Play In 2023
Carlos Dunlap, the 34-year-old defensive end of the Kansas City Chiefs, is a free agent who has not yet decided if he'll continue playing in the NFL. He had a successful 2022 season and is waiting for a potential offer. Dunlap had accepted a lesser role during the last campaign, which helped mentor younger players including rookie George Karlfaftis and he expects a similar role next season. The Chiefs have not closed the door on a potential return and Dunlap would welcome that opportunity to help the team win again.

Dunlap opened his new brunch restaurant, Honey Uninhibited, located in Covington, Kentucky, which is part of Greater Cincinnati, where he played the first 11 years of his career. Honey Uninhibited's second location has a similar vibe to the original one in Miami, with a unique ambience featuring a green wall and a hip-hop vibe. The most popular items on the menu include chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and lobster truffle mac and cheese. His hospitality group has purchased another restaurant location in Miami's Coconut Grove and has plans for three franchises in Charleston. Dunlap would like to eventually have restaurants in Seattle and Kansas City, but he doesn't foresee playing for the Bengals next season, considering the Bengals' depth on the defensive line.

Developed around particles left by meteors, these thin clouds are made purely of ice and can only be seen at twilight.

Disciplinary hearing for John Eastman, an attorney who tried to keep Trump in office after the 2020 election, begins in LA. Prosecution is expected to last eight days, and the final decision is left to the California Supreme Court. The former dean strongly disputes the allegations, saying the California State Bar is going after him on conduct protected by the First Amendment.
