Gavin Newsom's promise to appoint a black woman to the Senate if Sen. Feinstein is forced to resign has drawn criticism due to its implication of "identity politics". Newsom claims that "representation does matter", but fails to specify what principle of representation is being used, leading to accusations of racism and sexism as well as a rejection of the merit-based system that has made the US a global superpower. The Left's philosophy has focused on superficial characteristics such as race, gender, and sexual orientation, thereby undermining the principle of merit and demagoguing political issues for selfish short-term gain.

Retired Lt. Gen. Khalid Kidwai, adviser to Pakistan's National Command Authority, provided new details on Pakistan's nuclear posture during a seminar. He explained the scope of the country's long-standing policy of full-spectrum deterrence, comprising robust tri-services inventory, and new elements such as an unprecedented range of 0 meters and the possibility of nuclear land mines. Pakistan has always maintained ambiguity in its nuclear policy, and it is uncertain whether Kidwai's announcement refers to a technical milestone or serves as a rhetorical escalation. The shift, regardless of the logic, is problematic for regional stability and India's perception that it can fight a limited conventional war against a nuclear-armed adversary.
The potential policy of Pakistan going down to zero-range weapons is seen as part of a newly perceived gap in deterrence posture and an attempt to add additional options to the country's arsenal of responses, making it difficult or impossible for India to take out Pakistan's entire nuclear force in a decapitating first strike. Luckily, there are scientists on board to develop ways to quickly identify viral threats and produce treatments to defeat them.
