Forbes: Jardine Matheson’s Investment Arm To Partner With Southeast Asian Car Marketplace Carro
Jardine Cycle & Carriage has partnered with Carro in a deal worth over $60 million to boost used car sales amid new vehicle shortages. The partnership will give Carro access to more high-quality used cars and allow it to improve the digital offerings of Republic Auto, a second-hand car dealer it will have an equivalent stake in. Additionally, the companies will work together to launch an automotive aftermarket business in Singapore and Malaysia. This partnership is timely as the shortage of global chips has kept vehicle production low and concerns of an economic recession have driven up used car demand.
JC&C and Carro’s partnership will enable an expansion of operations as well as capabilities in financing, insurance, and after-sales. CEO of Carro, Aaron Tan, believes that JC&C’s footprint in other areas such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia is “extremely synergistic.” JC&C’s investment holding company is Jardine Matheson which has operations in real estate, hospitality, heavy engineering, financial services, and more. Southeast Asia-focused JC&C controls Astra International, one of the two flagship businesses of the Jardines conglomerate, as well as interests in Thailand’s leading cement maker Siam City Cement, Vietnam’s leading car maker Truong Hai Group Corporation, and the biggest dairy producer Vinamilk.

Flag And Cross: New Armored Dinosaur Species Unearthed On UK's 'Dinosaur Island'
A new species of armored dinosaur has been found on the Isle of Wight, with large horns and a club-shaped tail for fighting off predators. Vectipelta barretti was a plant eater, up to 20 feet long, and had razor-sharp teeth. It is the first armored dinosaur to be described from the area in 142 years, shining a light on ankylosaur diversity within Early Cretaceous England. The Isle of Wight holds one of the richest treasure troves of dinosaur bones in Europe, with over 20 species previously dug out. Vectipelta suggests ankylosaurs were far more diverse than previously thought and adds insight into dinosaur diversity to uncover mass extinction events.
The prickly-looking beast was discovered in rocks dating back 125 million years, a time for which fossil remains are rare worldwide. Vectipelta's spikes were more blade-like and it moved freely from Asia to Europe during the early Cretaceous, suggesting that some dinosaurs did too. Producing a genetic family tree, researchers found it was related to some Chinese cousins. The team is optimistic that more species will be discovered in the area in the future. A slow-moving, spiky organism has also been named after world-leading authority on dinosaurs, Professor Paul Barrett.
