The Epoch Times: Blinken Meets Chinese Foreign Minister in a Rare Trip to Beijing Amid Criticism and Dim Hopes for Progress
Blinken Meets Chinese Foreign Minister in a Rare Trip to Beijing Amid Criticism and Dim Hopes for Progress
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qing Gan in Beijing during a controversial two-day visit. Critics have deemed the trip ill-advised, given the regime’s increasing aggression towards the West, prompting experts and lawmakers to predict that the trip will produce few, if any, breakthroughs. Nevertheless, Washington has pursued a string of efforts to engage with Beijing, and with the visit intended to shore up relations between the US and China, President Xi Jinping is likely to comply, as a falling-out would lead to mass foreign investors leaving the mainland, and the faltering of Beijing’s post-Covid economic recovery. Chen Lijian, a US-based China commentator, has suggested that the lack of progress from the talks is due to the fact that all decisions ultimately come from Xi himself.

Federal Reserve Slams the Pause Button in June FOMC Meeting
After ten rate hikes, the Federal Reserve left the benchmark fed funds rate unchanged at 5% to 5.25%, meaning the central bank's work is not done, with two more planned hikes this year. The median policy rate is expected to reach 5.6% by the end of 2023, and 4.6% and 3.4% in 2024 and 2025, respectively. While projections were revised higher for GDP and inflation, the unemployment rate saw a downgrade to 4.1% at year-end. Traders struggled with interpreting a mixed response to the announcement and the following press conference, but the wider picture presents a potentially troubling scenario for households struggling with borrowing costs and inflation.

Disney Never Learns: Another Expensive, Woke Animated Film from Studio Flops Hard
Disney's third woke animated film in a year, "Elemental," is predicted to have an even lower box office weekend (between $28-32 million) than originally forecasted. Even after an aggressive marketing campaign that debuted the film at Cannes, the latest Pixar-produced film is being touted as the biggest Pixar box-office bomb ever, failing to appeal to audiences despite attempts at tackling themes of social imbalance in urban America. As a third flop in a row for Pixar, “Elemental” is sparking discussions on the profits and pushbacks of Hollywood's wokeness and, subsequently, whether engagement with current socio-political flashpoints are translating over to the projected box office ratings.

Flyover Folk Talk of Fairies – Both the Tooth and LGBTQ Varieties
President Biden handed over his presidential duties for 12 hours to Vice President Kamala Harris, as he underwent a root canal procedure which was handled by the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Dental Team. The president's toothache led to comments from those unconvinced by the official statement, like the gas and oil people who speculated it may have been a cover-up, while many Americans simply joked that it was Trump's fault.

In baseball news, the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of queer and trans 'nuns' who mock the Catholic church and Jesus' crucifixion, during a Pride event at the stadium. Although the Dodgers praised the group's contributions to the LGBTQ community, it sparked protests with over 2,000 Catholics gathering outside of the stadium and holding signs. Debating over the timing and impact of the event, some advocated for coexistence while others argued it's time to push back.

Biden Claims Spy Balloon Was ‘More Embarrassing’ for China Than It Was ‘Intentional’
President Biden suggests Chinese spy balloon that flew over US in February was "more embarrassing" than "intentional." Secretary of State Antony Blinken's meeting with China's Qin Gang was initially delayed due to the spy balloon. U.S. officials were said to be considering the possibility that China did not intend to send the spy balloon over the continental United States, but instead took advantage of the balloon being blown off course to surveil sensitive Montana locations. The balloon could have been intended for U.S. military installations in the Pacific, previously targets of Chinese espionage.

Massive cyberattack strikes millions: Are you at risk?
A massive cyberattack targeting MOVEit, a widely used file-transfer program, has compromised personal data of millions of Americans, including those possessing driver's licenses or state identification cards in Louisiana and Oregon. Concerns grow over the potential increase in affected individuals, including multinational corporations, federal and state agencies, and universities. The attack was carried out by a Russian hacker group called Clop, which has a history of demanding multimillion-dollar ransoms.

The hacker group, exploiting a flaw in MOVEit software made by the Massachusetts-based Progress Software Corp., impacted numerous large corporations worldwide, federal agencies, and universities. The stolen data includes the name, address, Social Security number, birth date, height, eye color, driver's license number, vehicle registration information, and handicap placard information. Those impacted should monitor their accounts, place fraud alerts, check credit reports, freeze credit, and enable two-factor authentication. They should also consider investing in identity theft protection and keep software updated to ensure the latest security patches and protections.
