Fox News: Boston mayor responds after lawmakers try to slash police budget, veteran services
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu rejected a proposal by the city council to cut both the funding to the Boston police department and veteran services, which was included in the city's $4.2bn operating budget. Despite a veto from Mayor Wu, the budget will be sent back to the council where it will need two-thirds of members to override her. Wu's veto was criticised by the Better Budget Alliance, which advocates for participatory budgeting, but it was praised by the head of the city’s largest police union.

Former VP Mike Pence's Chief of Staff, Marc Short, condemned former President Donald Trump's pardons given in the final hours of his administration. During an appearance on Fox News, Short narrated that Trump granted pardons to cocaine traffickers, family members, and people guilty of violent crimes. Short urged for a conversation on the power of the pardon and called Trump's pardon record "indefensible."
Former President Donald Trump issued 73 pardons and 70 sentence commutations on his final day of office, January 20, 2021. Pardon recipients included former White House adviser Steve Bannon, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black. Marc Short, former chief of staff to VP Mike Pence, criticized Trump's final pardons for including family members, "cocaine traffickers" and violent criminals. Pence defended Trump's right to have his day in court on NBC's "Meet the Press" but avoided questioning on Trump's conviction allegations.

Maine lobstermen sued the Biden administration's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) over a new rule that limits their operations and sets technical standards on the amount of lobster trap rope in the water. The rule was put in place to protect the North Atlantic right whale, but lobstermen argue that it threatens to put family-owned lobster fisheries out of business. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in favor of the lobstermen, stating that the NMFS's legal reasoning was "egregiously wrong." He also previously pleaded not guilty to state charges in New York in relation to an investigation of alleged falsified business records related to hush-money payments made during the 2016 campaign.

Republicans have accused the DOJ of being weaponized against them, with House Republicans creating a subcommittee to investigate “disparate treatment” from the DOJ. Hutchinson argues that Trump should put the “office of presidency and our country” above himself and calls for a return to being the party of the rule of law. Trump is leading the Republican field of candidates in multiple polls.

As of Friday, investigators had not yet spoken with the driver of the bus, who remained in hospital along with the nine other survivors.
