Scientists believe an earthquake and tsunami could have destroyed the forest and buried the stumps, which are estimated to be 2,000 years old. Visitors can access the site through the Neskowin Beach State Recreation Site all year and explore the area by hiking one of the nearby trails. The best time to visit is during low tide, and visitors should pay attention to the tide charts.
