The Epoch Times: ANALYSIS: Not Every Republican Running in 2024 Has Sights Set on the Presidency
ANALYSIS: Not Every Republican Running in 2024 Has Sights Set on the Presidency
Expert opinions about the Republican candidates running in the 2024 presidential race suggest that many are positioning themselves for a potential vice presidential or cabinet position, rather than a shot at the Oval Office. Some experts believe this is because these candidates realistically do not have a chance at winning the nomination and are instead hoping for a call from the eventual nominee. Demographic considerations may also be at play, with pressure to have a woman or non-white candidate on the ticket, and some candidates looking ahead to a post-Trump Republican party.

TikTok to Invest Billions of Dollars in Southeast Asia to Boost E-Commerce Business
TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, plans to invest billions of dollars in Southeast Asia to expand its e-commerce platform, TikTok Shop. Over 325 million visitors use TikTok each month in Southeast Asia, generating a large user base. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said the company will invest in training, supporting small vendors, and advertising. The company facilitated $4.4 billion of transactions across the region last year. This investment comes as TikTok faces data security scrutiny from governments and regulators globally. There have been no major bans on the app in Southeast Asia, where it has also faced content scrutiny.

The Epoch Times: China's Economy Slows in May; Central Bank Cuts Interest Rate
China's Economy Slows in May; Central Bank Cuts Interest Rate
China's economy is slowing down with industrial output and retail sales growth falling below forecasts. China's central bank has cut key interest rates, indicating concerns about the pace of recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. Industrial output grew 3.5% YoY in May, slower than the 5.6% increase in April, while retail sales rose 12.7%, missing a forecast increase of 13.6%. After the latest disappointing data, analysts at Nomura said that China is having problems recovering, which means that the economic rebound previously seen has lost its momentum, nearly confirming economic double-dip. Private fixed-asset investment shrank, indicating weak business confidence, while Labor market pains continued with youth unemployment jumping. The property sector, a major driver of economic activity in China, is expected to grapple with “persistent weakness” for years while strikes at Chinese factories have surged to a seven-year high.
