The Southern Baptist Convention upheld the ousting of two congregations that had elevated women to lead and senior pastoral roles, including the second-largest congregation Saddleback Church, at their annual meeting in New Orleans. However, the constitutional amendment being proposed would add the wording that churches are only in "friendly cooperation" with the SBC if they "appoint, affirm, or employ only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture." Both Saddleback founding pastor Rick Warren and Fern Creek pastor Linda Popham spoke up on the floor of the convention Wednesday, pleading with messengers to understand and accept their position. Albeit, the decision to uphold the ousting prevailed with messengers responding overwhelmingly with a vote against welcoming back both churches.
