The Epoch Times: Government Accused of Bullying and Intimidation Over Small Boats Bill
Government Accused of Bullying and Intimidation Over Small Boats Bill
Peers in the House of Lords have accused the UK government of “abusing, bullying and intimidating” them during a recent discussion of the Illegal Migration Bill, which aims to ensure that those who arrive in the UK without permission will be detained and promptly deported. Critics argue that the legislation breaks international law and undermines modern slavery protections. The draft legislation has already received almost unanimous opposition in the Lords, having previously been passed by the Commons. Labour peer Baroness Lister of Burtersett said that ministers failed to listen to evidence, whilst Tory peer Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbotts accused the opposition of making repetitious speeches. Former director of public prosecutions, Lord Macdonald of River Glaven, claimed that the bill would impede efforts to bring people traffickers to justice as it would strip modern slavery protections from small boat migrants.

A former adviser to William Hague when he was foreign secretary, Tory peer Baroness Helic, has warned that the Illegal Migration Bill will reduce the number of people coming forward with evidence, and make prosecutions harder. Leading lawyer Lord Carlile of Berriew described any government action that inhibits the prosecution of modern slavery cases as “a dishonourable disgrace.” Labour frontbencher Lord Coaker described the bill as “a blanket approach to sexual slaves, child labour and forced labour” that would leave victims “without hope.” The legislation has so far encountered almost unanimous opposition in the Lords with critics arguing that it undermines modern slavery protections and breaks international law.

The Epoch Times: Trump to Appear in Miami Court for Historic Federal Case
Trump to Appear in Miami Court for Historic Federal Case
Former President Donald Trump and a personal aide are expected to appear in court in Miami to face charges of conspiring to hide Trump's alleged illegal retention and handling of classified records. Trump denies the charges, and his arraignment comes a day before his 77th birthday. If he is convicted of even a single one of the 37 charges lodged against him, he is at risk of passing away in prison, according to a legal expert. The indictments have split views amongst political observers on whether they have strengthened or weakened Trump's chances of winning the 2024 presidential election.

Fox News: Japan's powerful lower house of parliament passes bill promoting understanding of LGBTQ+ issues
Japan's powerful lower house of parliament passes bill promoting understanding of LGBTQ+ issues
Japan's lower house passed a bill to promote understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, marking progress for activists who have been pushing for an anti-discrimination law. However, last-minute revisions favored opponents of sexual equality over guaranteeing equal rights, leading to protests. The governing Liberal Democratic Party has been reluctant to promote gender equality and sexual diversity, making an anti-discrimination law difficult to pass.

The bill aims to create conditions so that "all citizens can live with peace of mind," but critics say the final version of the bill doesn't clearly ban discrimination, and instead focuses on the concerns of opponents of equal rights over the rights of sexual minorities. While a majority of Japanese back legalizing same-sex marriage and other protections, opposition remains strong within the governing party known for conservative values. The lack of legal protections for LGTBQ+ people was recently ruled unconstitutional by a court in Fukuoka, marking a small win for the community.

Gavin Newsom Admits California ‘Has Not Made Progress’ On Its Homelessness Crisis
California Governor Gavin Newsom admitted that his state has not made any progress in fixing its homelessness crisis, despite spending billions of dollars on it. California has about half of the nation’s unsheltered homeless, which is an estimated 115,000 people. Newsom blamed former Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for the state’s homelessness problem. California’s homeless population grew about 50% between 2014 and 2022.

Citizens of Hong Kong welcomed the yellow duck, which serves as a collective memory of their childhood and brings hope and joy to the currently "depressed Hong Kong."

The Epoch Times: Dollar Sags Before Inflation Data, Yuan Weakens on Rate Cut
Dollar Sags Before Inflation Data, Yuan Weakens on Rate Cut
The dollar fell slightly while the euro rose to $1.08 on Tuesday, with inflation data influencing the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting, and an interest rate decision expected on Wednesday. The market was "priced for a pause" from the Fed, said Jane Foley of Rabobank, adding that traders broadly expect the Fed to raise the rate by 25bp in July after a pause this week. On a different note, China's yuan weakened as the central bank lowered a short-term lending rate for the first time in 10 months to boost the economy. The UK's stronger than expected employment data resulted in the pound rising and traders betting that the Bank of England would raise interest rates further than expected.

The Federalist Papers: Biden DOJ Wants to See Trump Die in Jail - Faces 400 Years in Prison If Found Guilty on All Charges
Biden DOJ Wants to See Trump Die in Jail - Faces 400 Years in Prison If Found Guilty on All Charges
Legal experts warn that former President Donald Trump is at risk of facing a life sentence if he makes any slip-ups during his defense against charges of mishandling classified material. If Trump were convicted on all 37 counts against him, and received the maximum sentence for each, he could be sentenced to up to 400 years in prison. Two allegations against Trump carry a maximum of five years each, four carry maximum sentences of 20 years each, and 31 counts carry a maximum sentence of 10 years each. Republicans have accused Joe Biden of trying to give Trump a "death sentence" for mishandling documents, while legal scholar Jonathan Turley said he is in a tight spot and faces a lethal threat, with it being unlikely that he would survive a prison stint at 76 years old.

What Crimes Was Trump Charged With In Federal Documents Case? Here’s What To Know As He Pleads Not Guilty
Former President Donald Trump is expected to plead not guilty to 37 felony charges against him in court Tuesday, including charges for allegedly willfully retaining national defense information and conspiring to obstruct justice. The indictment charges Trump with 31 alleged violations of 18 U.S.C. 793 for the willful retention of national defense information, along with one count each of conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, concealing a document in a federal investigation, scheme to conceal, and making false statements and representations. The charges carry prison sentences if he’s convicted.

Trump faces charges under several sections of the United States Code, including The Espionage Act and obstruction, with punishment of a fine or up to 20 years in prison. Once he pleads not guilty in court, reporters will await the transcript of the hearing since no cameras or smartphones are allowed inside the courtroom. Trump's attorneys and the Department of Justice are likely to suggest timelines with regard to the trial proceedings. Trump is the first former U.S. president to face federal criminal charges. The DOJ has been investigating Trump’s retention of White House documents since February 2022.

Special Bridges Being Built To Protect UK Bison Population
Bison will be able to roam freely in their natural habitat with the help of special bridges built over public footpaths. The rewilding scheme in Kent, England has reintroduced bison, the first in the UK in 6,000 years. The Wilder Blean project has designed "bison bridges" to avoid cutting down the animal's space and to allow them to explore a larger habitat without coming into contact with humans. The bison's eco-engineering is part of a £1.1m plan encouraging biodiversity to create a woodland more resilient to climate change. The Wilder Blean project is set to be the first of many such schemes.
