The Diamond Foundation has donated $20m to Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital in memory of Steven Diamond, who died of an overdose after months on a waiting list for addiction help. The donation will go towards “Road to Recovery”, an addiction treatment model due to open in autumn 2023, which will provide a full continuum of care, including 95 treatment beds and outpatient services. British Columbia’s government has pledged $60.9m towards the model and $184m to “safer substance use.”
The program’s initial focus is stabilising patients. The donation was described as “a catalyst” in helping to secure government funding, by Fiona Dalton, provisional president of Providence Health Care, while Jill Diamond, Steven’s sister and the executive director of the family foundation, said it aimed to “set a new standard across Canada” in the treatment of addiction.
