Fox News: Trump's court appearance triggers ramped-up law enforcement presence in Miami
Trump's court appearance triggers ramped-up law enforcement presence in Miami
Law enforcement agencies are increasing their presence in Miami as former President Donald Trump prepares to appear in court. Miami-Dade police stand ready to assist in any security effort needed, with fencing and barricades already in place around the courthouse. Law enforcement groups are monitoring for protest plans at both the courthouse and Trump's residence at his Mar-a-Lago club. The situation is similar to Trump's indictment in New York City, which saw days of largely peaceful protests. Trump's Florida indictment includes 37 counts of various crimes, and former allies have pointed to the seriousness of the allegations.

Fox News: Native American protesters shut down Biden admin event over oil leasing ban
Native American protesters shut down Biden admin event over oil leasing ban
Navajo protesters blocked Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and Bureau of Indian Affairs head Bryan Newland from entering their territory to celebrate a recent oil leasing ban at the Chaco Culture National Historical Park. The Navajo Nation citizens held signs saying "Go Home" and "No Trespassing" in response to Haaland's ban on oil, gas, and mineral leasing within 10 miles of the Chaco Canyon site for 20 years, which local communities and government leaders oppose. Critics argue that the action will harm low-income Navajo citizens who depend on the revenue from leasing their allotments within the zone, generating $6.2 million per year in royalties for an estimated 5,462 allottees, and will put them into poverty.

Townhall: Gavin Newsom Is Conceding He Has to Amend the Constitution
Gavin Newsom Is Conceding He Has to Amend the Constitution
California Governor Newsom wants to pass gun control measures like raising the age of gun ownership, imposing background checks on private transfers, requiring waiting periods for buying guns, and enacting an assault weapon ban. However, he needs to amend the US Constitution to do so, and Democrats don't have the votes. California's strict gun control laws have not decreased its per capita rate of mass public shootings, which is consistently higher than Texas' and the rest of the US. Gun control measures like universal background checks, waiting periods, and assault rifle bans may seem helpful, but they can prevent law-abiding citizens from buying a gun for self-defense and are often ineffective at reducing crime.

National Review: The Corner: The Ghastly and Contradictory Pride Flag
The Corner: The Ghastly and Contradictory Pride Flag
President Biden and his wife tweeted a picture of a Pride flag hanging from the White House for a Pride event. The Pride flag has been revised many times, adding more colors and symbols, making it visually noisy. The inclusion of various symbolisms on the flag represents what some call a cacophony of representation. This messaging about sex, gender, and racial politics has no limiting principle, and intersectionalists will continuously need to get a bigger flag or decide who speaks their oppression when. Only the American flag should fly from the White House.

Forbes: Suddenly California Now Loves The Press. 3 Years Ago They Hated It
Suddenly California Now Loves The Press. 3 Years Ago They Hated It
California’s state assembly, which had previously passed a bill harming freelance journalists, has now passed a law requiring social media companies to pay a percentage of their advertising revenue to support news organizations, known as the “Journalism Preservation Act”. Organizations receiving the funds will be required to spend 70% of the financial support on journalists and support staff. The new rules will require Meta, Google, Twitter, and others to pay a “journalism usage fee” for news content, but the effects of the law remain unknown.

The previous bill, AB5, restricted freelance journalists writing in California to authoring no more than 35 articles annually. The restriction ignored the length of articles or the amount of payment for any one freelance gig, resulting in many prolific freelance writers being squeezed out of careers. While AB 886’s effects remain uncertain, some worry about the precedent such legislation sets for social media giants and its prospect for sparking legal disputes.

Fox News: Biden’s Pentagon can’t recruit new soldiers and that threatens us all
Biden’s Pentagon can’t recruit new soldiers and that threatens us all
The US military is experiencing its worst recruitment period on record due to a smaller pool of young people qualified to serve, declining public confidence, and low unemployment. The Army missed its 2022 recruitment goals by 25% and things look bleak for 2023. This is a dangerous situation for national security and means many young Americans are missing out on life-changing opportunities. Military service is a reliable means for young people to transcend their circumstances and build a better life, offering a proven path for upward mobility and developing critical skills.

However, societal expectations for attending college immediately after high school mean guidance counselors may not highlight the benefits of military service, instead pushing 62% of high school seniors to college. This lack of education on military opportunities, combined with a stigma around alternatives to college, perpetuates a lack of understanding and appreciation for the military. To fix this trend, the US should reacquaint its citizens with the military, highlighting it as a noble pursuit and recognizing military service for producing more resilient, capable young men and women. Spectator USA: Tucker Carlson can live without Fox News. Can they live without him?
Tucker Carlson can live without Fox News. Can they live without him?
Fox News' ratings have plummeted since the departure of Tucker Carlson from the network, with total viewership down nearly 40% and a 62% drop in the key demographic. Carlson's executive producer claims Fox News executives didn't understand that the Tucker brand was as substantial as their own. The cable news industry has a limited future, Carlson said, adding that cable news is too controlled, and authenticity is lacking. The paradox of Tucker's success at Fox was that, in this most corporate of settings, his distrust of corporatism is what made him so popular and unique. Carlson brought the internet to cable news and cable news to the internet.

The Epoch Times: Dietary Fiber Helps Prevent Dementia, but Be Wary of Supplements When Taking These Medications
Dietary Fiber Helps Prevent Dementia, but Be Wary of Supplements When Taking These Medications
People should consume a healthy diet high in dietary fiber, which can reduce the risk for dementia and have various other health benefits. Fiber comes from plant-based foods and plays a vital role in maintaining gut bacteria balance, promoting bowel regularity, regulating the absorption of fat, carbohydrates, and protein, and reducing inflammation in the gut and brain. Soluble fiber is most effective in preventing dementia, and foods such as beans, peas, oat products, avocado, and oranges are good sources of soluble fiber. However, people should not rely on dietary fiber supplements and must ensure they do not affect certain medication absorption.

California Bill Seeks to Cover Surrogacy Costs for Gay and Lesbian Couples
California lawmakers are considering a bill that would require insurance companies to cover the costs of fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization and surrogacy, for gay and lesbian couples. The bill redefines "infertility" to include the inability to reproduce with a partner without medical intervention and prohibits policies that exclude coverage for surrogacy. It is opposed by insurance companies and conservative groups, but could encourage child-rearing in a culture where birth rates are dropping.

Media Obituaries Hide 'Unabomber' Ted Kaczynski's Transgender Claim
Ted Kaczynski, the "Unabomber," died on Saturday at an old age, but his transgender-related motivations behind his mail-bomb attacks were ignored in media obituaries. A psychiatric evaluation from 1998 revealed that Kaczynski had intense sexual fantasies about being a woman. The report indicated that Kaczynski's sexual confusion began in 1966, culminating in his negative views towards modern technology. Kaczynski's illness transformed him from a college math teacher to a domestic terrorist who mailed 16 bombs over 17 years.

Marine Daniel Penny Says He ‘Couldn’t Sit Still’ as Jordan Neely Threatened to Kill Scared Passengers
Marine Corps veteran Daniel Penny has released a video detailing his perspective on the fatal chokehold he admitted placing on Jordan Neely, blaming his actions on the need to protect fellow civilians from Neely's threatening behaviour. Neely, who had a history of mental illness, had been yelling on a subway train that he wanted to die before Penny restrained him, leading to his death. Despite initial immunity from prosecution on the grounds that he was an off-duty police officer at the time, Penny now faces a charge of second-degree manslaughter.

What Is 'Espionage' and Why Is Trump Being Indicted for It?
Donald Trump faces indictment over classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. He attempted to hide documents from prosecutors, violating the law. However, the indictment also includes violations of the Espionage Act of 1917, making it a crime to willfully retain unauthorized national defense information without delivering it back to the government, which seems targeted at hostile actors. Nonetheless, the plain text of the law seems to give prosecutors the ability to go after Trump on this issue, meaning it will take some good lawyering to prove his innocence.

The Corner: Gallup: Growing Super-Majority of Americans Agree with Conservatives about Transgender Athletes
Americans now overwhelmingly believe that transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that match their birth gender. According to a May 2023 Gallup poll, 69% of Americans hold this view, a significant increase from the 62% who held it in 2021. The shift may be due in part to the visibility and success of transgender athletes like Lia Thomas.
