The Epoch Times: Orange County Asks Judge to Extend Ban on NYC Relocation of Illegal Immigrants
Orange County requested an injunction to prevent New York City from relocating illegal immigrants to hotels in the county during their legal battle; the city argued that it has the right to send individuals to hotels outside its boundary and asked the lawsuit be dismissed. The hotels and the county are also defendants. The county argued that the arrangement mirrored a homeless shelter, lacked local infrastructure, and harmed residents; the city said it needed to free up space for the increasing number of illegal immigrants, following the pandemic-era policy's expiration allowed for preventative expulsion of illegal immigrants. Multiple lawsuits have been filed since May 11, with other counties issuing similar executive orders to prohibit hotels from housing illegal immigrants from New York City.

Forbes: House Ways And Means Committee Introduces Potential Tax Extender Bill
The House has introduced the Build It In America Act to address business taxpayer concerns around rising interest expenses and deduction limitations on research and experimental expenditures that could lead to increased cash federal income tax payments. The Act allows taxpayers to currently deduct research and experimental expenditures that are paid or incurred in tax years beginning after December 31, 2021, and before January 1, 2026. It also broadens the base of the interest expense limitation calculation by allowing depreciation and amortization to be added back before applying the 30% limitation for taxable years before January 1, 2026, and proposes that 100% bonus depreciation would remain for qualified property placed in service before January 1, 2026.
While businesses may be happy with these changes, the government faces uncharted territory regarding the deficit and revenue raisers must be identified to cover the costs of such extensions. Democrats push to expand the child tax credit while the Build It In America Act repeals certain energy tax credits, which could be a contentious issue. The Act only addresses provisions scheduled to sunset in 2022 and 2023, but more of the TCJA provisions expire in 2026, which could require significant federal income tax reform. The future looks uncertain, but for now, businesses can take advantage of the proposed changes in the Act.
