Breitbart: Exclusive - Rep. Jim Jordan: 'Number One Goal' to End Reauthorization of FBI Spy Powers
Exclusive - Rep. Jim Jordan: 'Number One Goal' to End Reauthorization of FBI Spy Powers
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan's primary goal this year is to block the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which will soon expire. Jordan has cited misuse by the FBI, with over 300,000 abuses of the act reported, and a lack of sufficient justification as reasons to oppose a reauthorization. Republicans such as Darin LaHood have alleged that they have been surveilled by the agency. Jordan's and other lawmakers' criticism of FISA may make a blanket reauthorization unlikely.

The Corner: When Reporters Make Fools of Themselves, It Doesn’t Reflect Poorly on DeSantis
Political reporters continue to harass Florida governor Ron DeSantis for stonewalling their questions during his presidential campaign. Reporters have resorted to bombarding him with meaningless questions. Although they feel that they are making DeSantis look bad, he seems indifferent to their attempts. DeSantis has refused to acknowledge the necessity of the mainstream press; a melodrama that seems to exist only in the minds of reporters.

Israeli Opposition Issues Ultimatum Over Reform Talks
The opposition in Israel has given the government an ultimatum to convene the Judicial Selection Committee if they are to continue talks. In 2022, over 2.67 million tourists entered Israel despite ongoing issues with the government. Yesh Atid demands that Justice Minister Yair Levin convenes the committee by the end of June to fill the backlog of judicial appointments. Predictably, opposition parties cannot agree on who should be chosen by the committee. Notably, MK Simcha Rothman dismisses the talks, calling them "meaningless" and "futile". The talks have also received criticism from anti-judicial reform protest organizers. The government ultimately urged its opponents to agree with its proposal to establish a binding legal code of ethics.

Deals to Let Firms Avoid Bribery Charges May Be 'Political Kryptonite': Law Professor
Canadian prosecutors have approved only two deferred prosecution deals since they were given powers to conclude such agreements with firms accused of corruption five years ago. The remediation deals, which enable businesses to avoid charges in exchange for admissions of wrongdoing, co-operation with investigators, payment of penalties and other commitments, were introduced to the country’s criminal code in 2018. But the years-long gap between a company’s wrongdoing and a resolution via an agreement raises questions about the effectiveness of the deals at curtailing corruption, according to Professor Jennifer Quaid of the University of Ottawa. Quebec company Ultra Electronics Forensic Technology is the second firm to enter a remediation agreement, it emerged this week. The company must pay about $10m for its corrupt dealings in the Philippines.

President Biden fell on stage during the Air Force Academy graduation in Colorado Springs, but was helped to his feet and appeared unhurt. Biden, 80, appeared to point to a black sandbag on the stage, according to footage. The White House responded to the video by saying that the president is “fine," and press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted that Biden was “totally fine” as she boarded Air Force One. Former President Donald Trump responded to the fall while campaigning in Iowa, drawing attention to questions about Biden's age and health.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a presidential candidate, asked a reporter if he was “blind” for asking why he wasn’t taking questions from voters during his first New Hampshire campaign event on June 1. DeSantis responded sharply, surrounded by members of the crowd, saying “People are coming up to me, talking to me,” and “Are you blind? Taxpayers' Group Calls on Alberta Premier to Shrink Cabinet Size Following UCP Re-Election
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is urging Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to form a smaller cabinet after her United Conservative Party (UCP) government won re-election in May, with each of the 25 cabinet ministers earning $181,404 per year. The CTF believes a smaller cabinet would make the government more efficient and save taxpayers' money. Marco Navarro-Génie, senior fellow at the Winnipeg-based Frontier Centre for Public Policy, said a smaller cabinet will mean Smith has less “loose cannons to manage” and will help her consolidate her power inside the caucus. He also predicts that the size of Smith’s cabinet will give Albertans a clear signal of how the next four years of governance will unfold.

The Epoch Times: Federal Judge Grants Request to Block Biden Admin' AR Pistol Brace Rule in Texas
Federal Judge Grants Request to Block Biden Admin' AR Pistol Brace Rule in Texas
A federal judge in Texas has blocked the Biden administration's pistol brace rule, which requires gun owners to register their AR-15-style pistols fitted with arm braces that could allow firing from the shoulder. The rule classifies short-barreled rifles as regulated by the National Firearm Act and must be registered accordingly. Two Second Amendment advocacy groups, Gun Owners of America and Gun Owners Foundation, have sued against this rule to prevent their two million members and supporters from facing felony charges. In a decision, the judge ruled in favor of the two groups, blocking the regulation from being enforced on their current members, families, and Texas state employees. This ruling was based on the fact that the pistol brace rule could not comply with a test set forth by the US Supreme Court last summer in deciding whether the government is violating someone's Second Amendment rights. The judge agreed that there is no founding-era historical tradition of regulating handguns in a manner so as to justify the strict regulation of braced pistols now.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs sues alcohol giant for alleged racist practices, claims company treated his brands worse 'because he is black'
Sean "Diddy" Combs is suing his business partner, alcohol brand Diageo, for allegedly exhibiting racist practices and favoring other brands. The lawsuit alleges that Diageo “put their feet on the neck of Mr Combs’ brands" and siphoned off production and distribution capabilities, leading to decreased sales of Combs' products. Combs' team is seeking a court order that would require “equal treatment” and damages in another suit. The lawsuit also claims that Diageo pigeonholed Ciroc and DeLeon as "Black brands" and is discriminating against Combs.

Spectator USA: The dangers of faux-education
The dangers of faux-education
Voltaire spent his life as a polemicist waging war against Christianity, Catholicism, and monarchy, along with its political and social allies, and dedicated his famous battle cry to “Écrasez l’Infȃme!” Two centuries later, Western institutions of higher learning and high culture have become a progressive monoculture that is just as uncompromising and intolerant as the traditional Infâme. The solution is to restore serious philosophical speculation, intellectual theorizing, and social observation in universities and colleges to their rigorous standards of serious and disinterested thought and to their historical social position and cultural role in society.

The over- and under-education of Western societies has created an ostensibly educated class that has an inflated view of its own importance and intellectual attainments. As a result, modern professional intellectuals have been advanced into the governing class with universities and intellectualism being overvalued. The solution is to reverse the excessive intellectualization and ideological infusion of postmodern institutions, restore institutions of higher learning to their previously rigorous standards, and return serious philosophical speculation, intellectual theorizing, and social observation to their proper spheres.

A breakdown in process was blamed for why security intelligence about threats to MPs was not briefed to any relevant minister, according to National Security and Intelligence Advisor Jody Thomas. A 2021 Canadian Security Intelligence Service assessment on Chinese regime targeting MPs for their support of human rights in China, which was leaked, was not presented to any ministers. The issue only came to light after a news report. Thomas admitted to giving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau inaccurate information about the information not leaving CSIS and added that an accountability framework is being put in place to track who is reading intelligence products.

Clueless CEOs Will Regret Playing Ball With Beijing
Major American CEOs, including Elon Musk, Jamie Dimon, and Laxman Narasimhan, are squandering the opportunity to take China and Russia down in power and influence. Despite the risks of being dependent on cheap Chinese manufacturing and supply, corporate giants are still investing in China. Economic “de-coupling” is exactly what these internationally engaged businesses should be doing as regards Beijing. The United States should also provide tactical missile systems to the Ukrainian army, which would lead to a resonating defeat for Vladimir Putin that would squash Moscow’s global ability to project its power. However, the Biden administration’s policy renders Blinken’s assurance that the United States will be “adversarial when it must be” lacking in credibility.

Montreal-area community organizations, Centre Sino-Québec de la Rive-Sud and Service à la famille chinoise du Grand Montréal, are being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for hosting what are suspected to be Chinese police stations. This revelation occurred after Spanish NGO Safeguard Defenders released a report identifying seven such suspected stations in Canada. The two organizations have had formal ties with the Chinese regime's oversea entity, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office (OCAO), since at least 2016, and Chinese immigration and border services view the OCAO as an entity involved in espionage and manipulation. The Quebec Ministry of Immigration and the Canadian government have both provided funding to the organizations in the past.

Supreme Court Reverses Ruling Against Slack Technologies Over Direct Listing
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Slack Technologies, limiting shareholders' power to sue over companies' misleading statements when selling shares in a direct listing. Slack was accused of making false statements in 2019 but instead of making a public stock offering, the company made a direct listing after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved the alternative procedure in 2018. The Supreme Court agreed with Slack, vacating the 9th Circuit’s ruling and remanding the case to that court for further proceedings. To bring a section 11 claim, “the securities held by the plaintiff must be traceable to the particular registration statement alleged to be false or misleading,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote.

California Lawmakers Pass Bill to Ban Autonomous Trucks
California passes a bill to ban autonomous trucks over 10,000 pounds from operating without human drivers. Labor groups, such as the Teamsters, support the proposal, stating that driverless trucks would eliminate thousands of good-paying jobs. The bill now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom for his signature.

The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) opposes the bill, stating that it will put California further behind other states in terms of autonomous technology regulation. AVIA argues that autonomous trucks are safer than human drivers and that AB 316 is a preemptive technology ban. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is considering a framework that would allow autonomous vehicles over 10,000 pounds to hit the road without the California Legislature's consent. Commercial truck drivers argue that they are trained to handle unexpected circumstances, making autonomous technology unsafe.

The Orange County Industrial Development Agency has approved tax exemptions worth more than $10m for the construction of a new $200m Amazon fulfilment centre in Wawayanda, the third such centre to be built in the area. Amazon contended the incentives were necessary to support business growth and make operations in the state more favourable, given incentives available from neighbouring New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. The centre will create 150 full-time jobs, with nine out of 10 of those expected to be low-skill positions. Several concerned residents questioned the tax incentives at a public hearing in March, due to the low salaries and potential for automation in warehousing.

Eleven senators, led by Elizabeth Warren and J.D. Vance, introduced the Failed Bank Executives Clawback Act, which would allow federal regulators to claw back up to three years of compensation for CEO's, board members, controlling shareholders, and other integral individuals should the company fail or be resolved. The bill seeks to prevent US taxpayers from facing the costs of executives' excessive risk-taking and gross mismanagement. Experts see clawback as a double-edged sword. While it may offer an incentive to boost the value for shareholders, a CEO may take excessive risks to drive up the share price.

Firefighters from around the world have been travelling to Canada to aid firefighting suppression efforts.

Temperatures in Nova Scotia are expected to reach highs of 32C, with out-of-control fires burning across the region, posing risks to communities. Poor air quality and evacuations are also affecting the province, with over 160,000 residents evacuated and advisories in place across the country. The Canadian government has pledged to provide support to Nova Scotia, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stating that they “stand ready to provide any assistance they need”. The province has also requested aid from other countries, including the US and South Africa, and firefighting crews from Australia and New Zealand are already in Canada.
