Quebec company Ultra Electronics Forensic Technology is the second firm to enter a remediation agreement, it emerged this week. The company must pay about $10m for its corrupt dealings in the Philippines.

A federal judge in Texas has blocked the Biden administration's pistol brace rule, which requires gun owners to register their AR-15-style pistols fitted with arm braces that could allow firing from the shoulder. The rule classifies short-barreled rifles as regulated by the National Firearm Act and must be registered accordingly. Two Second Amendment advocacy groups, Gun Owners of America and Gun Owners Foundation, have sued against this rule to prevent their two million members and supporters from facing felony charges. In a decision, the judge ruled in favor of the two groups, blocking the regulation from being enforced on their current members, families, and Texas state employees. The Canadian government has pledged to provide support to Nova Scotia, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stating that they “stand ready to provide any assistance they need”. The province has also requested aid from other countries, including the US and South Africa, and firefighting crews from Australia and New Zealand are already in Canada.

The FDA has given approval to Pfizer's new vaccine, Abrysvo, to protect older adults against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Abrysvo is the second ever RSV vaccine to be authorized for use, following GSK’s Arexvy on May 3rd. Abrysvo's approval was based on the interim results of the study, which included 37,000 participants aged 60 and over, with the vaccine being 66.7% effective at preventing moderate lower respiratory tract illness with at least two symptoms and 85.7% effective at preventing illness with at least three symptoms. An ongoing double-blind, placebo-controlled RENOIR study evaluating the vaccine's efficacy, immunogenicity, and safety will continue with efficacy data being collected during the second RSV season. Furthermore, the trial also produced concerns over autoimmune syndromes, with one case of a patient developing Guillain-Barre syndrome and the incidence rate for these syndromes being 1 in 9,000 in contrast to 1 in 100,000 in the general population.

Two wildfires are out of control in Quebec due to high temperatures and little rain. One of them, close to the municipality of Chapais, has caused the evacuation of about 500 homes. Mélanie Morin, a spokeswoman for the province's forest fire prevention agency, SOPFEU, said a fireguard was being created between the town of Chapais and the fire, with water bombers and heavy machinery being used by firefighters. There are about a dozen active fires in the province, with the Chapais one and a 500-hectare blaze north of Sept-Îles particularly concerning. The Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean area, around 250 kilometres north of Quebec City, is also under threat, and people are being asked to avoid travelling in forests as much as possible.

As part of the settlement, Amazon will pay a $25 million civil fine and will not use data that has been asked to be deleted.
