The Epoch Times: Meta Threatens to Pull News Feeds Over California's Journalism Preservation Act
Meta Threatens to Pull News Feeds Over California's Journalism Preservation Act
Meta threatens to remove news feeds on Facebook and Instagram for Californian users if the Journalism Preservation Act is passed into law. The proposed law requires social media companies to pay journalism usage fees to news outlets. The bill also requires publishers to use 70% of the compensated fees to maintain journalism positions. Meta opposes the bill, stating that publishers put content on the platform themselves, and that Facebook is not a significant source for news. Meta has made similar threats in other countries, including Canada and France, and has challenged other compensation for news publisher bills in Congress.

The Economist: America avoids financial Armageddon but stays in fiscal hell
America avoids financial Armageddon but stays in fiscal hell
America avoids financial Armageddon but stays in fiscal hell as a deal is reached to raise the government's debt ceiling, avoiding default for at least the next 18 months. The deal reduces spending by $1.3 trillion over the next decade, but this is a drop in the bucket compared to federal spending, which is in the tens of trillions, and it does not address the critical issues of entitlement spending and tax revenues. The spending cuts will be focused on non-defence discretionary programmes, such as national parks and education. The deal must still pass the Senate, and the debt-ceiling drama is likely to start all over again when the current agreement runs out in 2025.

The debt-ceiling deal has cleared its toughest hurdle in the House of Representatives, but a battle looms in the Senate to pass it before the deadline or risk running out of cash. Republicans have called the deal a historic victory for budgetary prudence, but it does nothing to address America's fiscal irresponsibility, and creative accounting alone could shave off more than $90 billion from the cuts. The spending cuts will have little impact on inflation but could affect national parks, healthcare, and schools. The focus on non-defence discretionary programmes ignores the critical issues of entitlement spending and tax revenues, which both parties have avoided addressing.

By Sheer Coincidence, Biden's DOJ Goes After Likely Senate Candidate
DOJ sues Jim Justice’s coal empire while Justice Trails Justice by 22 points in a recent Senate race poll in WV. Democrats can't afford to lose their grip on that Senate seat and will likely resort to election interference to maintain their grip on the country's transforming democracy.

“Highly likely” first call to replace Putin made on Russian state television – British Intel
British intelligence notes recent call for new presidential elections in Russia and avoidance of Putin on state-controlled TV. Nationalist rhetoric may be emboldening opposition figures to challenge taboo topics. Owner of PMC Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin recently spoke against "denazification" and "demilitarization" of Ukraine, calling the Ukrainian army one of the strongest in the world.

Fox News: University of North Carolina med school renounces its own DEI framework
University of North Carolina med school renounces its own DEI framework
The University of North Carolina (UNC) medical school disbanded its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force without implementing its recommendations, including integrating social justice into the school's curriculum. This move comes just months after the school banned DEI statements from admission, hiring, promotion, and tenure processes as a result of a new guideline adopted by the university that prohibits requiring an employee or applicant to "affirmatively ascribe to or opine about beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles regarding matters of contemporary political debate or social action." UNC's reversal makes it the first medical school to take such an action.

Color Us United, which advocates for a race-blind society, launched a campaign that called on the university to rescind its DEI policies for medical school staff and students. The organization lobbied school trustees, brought bills to the state legislature, and educated the public through social media. The ban follows the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) sending a letter to UNC regarding its DEI initiatives. FIRE monitors and advocates for free speech on college campuses. The move is seen as a win for the medical community and their future patients, according to Color Us United President Kenny Xu.

Front Page Magazine: Cops Finally Arrest Domestic Terrorist 'Bail Fund' Officers
Cops Finally Arrest Domestic Terrorist 'Bail Fund' Officers
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested three officers from leftist group Network for Strong Communities that have committed charity fraud and money laundering for helping protesters and rioters through the Atlanta Solidarity Fund. The group involved in the fund has thrown Molotov cocktails at police and domestic terrorism, yet the NSC is still fundraising. Critics see the arrests as civil rights violations while Republicans vow to track down every member of a criminal organization and hold them accountable for their actions. The GBI is seizing their opportunity to take legal action against bail funds, which have caused at least ten known deaths and are debatable in their legality.

Forbes: Juventus Agree Plea Bargain To End Threat Of Further Sanctions In Serie A, But Still Await UEFA Ruling
Juventus Agree Plea Bargain To End Threat Of Further Sanctions In Serie A, But Still Await UEFA Ruling
Juventus and Italian football federation have ended investigations into player transfer fees and disputed player wages during the COVID-19 pandemic. Juventus had received a 10-point penalty over the registration of inflated player transfer fees, and faced allegations that the club agreed to pay players “off the books” after announcing that players would not receive wages, despite publishing in their accounts that the squad had forfeited wages. Juventus agreed to a plea bargain to put an end to the matter and also received a €718,240 fine. An investigation into these matters by UEFA is expected soon and a ban on Juventus from European competitions is thought to be a possibility.

Forbes: The UK Cost-Of-Living Crisis Is Making Soccer Unaffordable
The UK Cost-Of-Living Crisis Is Making Soccer Unaffordable
Soccer is becoming unaffordable for many in the UK, with fans attending fewer live sporting events and canceling TV sports subscriptions due to rising costs of living. A Saxo survey found that 46% of fans attended fewer events, and 41% canceled at least one TV sports subscription. Young people are cutting back even more, with 60% of 16-24 year-olds canceling subscriptions to sports channels. The cost and 3 p.m. blackout have pushed more fans to illegal streaming sites, with the Intellectual Property Office estimating around four million people in the UK stream live sport illegally each year. This could result in a hit to Premier League broadcast deals, but the league's overseas deals currently earn more than what it earns domestically, meaning it could be relatively unscathed. On the other hand, the impact of reduced revenue from fewer fans and a weaker TV deal will be felt in lower soccer leagues.

The Epoch Times: Australia Eyeing Mammoth 1.6 Million Tonnes of EV Battery Waste by 2050
Australia Eyeing Mammoth 1.6 Million Tonnes of EV Battery Waste by 2050
Australia faces a growing challenge of disposing of 1.6 million tonnes of disused EV batteries by 2050. The Battery Stewardship Council calls for a stewardship program to be created to address the issue. The program aims to design a scheme that is cost-effective, fit for purpose, and avoids the mistakes of the solar panel industry by prioritizing the discussion of end-of-life processes. The council is also asking for help in creating the infrastructure to handle EV batteries. It is not just EV batteries that are challenging to recycle; wind turbines and solar panels are also problematic, with blades only being 30% recyclable. Only 2% of solar panel waste is actually reused.
