The Epoch Times: Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz to Retire Next Month
Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz to Retire Next Month
Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz retires after more than three decades in the agency. Ortiz oversaw the agency during the COVID-19 pandemic and Title 42 emergency health restrictions, during which the agency encountered a record-high of 2.2 million illegal migrant encounters along the southern U.S. border. His departure comes shortly after the end of Title 42 emergency health restrictions and the roll-out of new restrictions meant to curb illegal border crossings. It is not clear who will replace Ortiz.

Ortiz is praised by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as a "great leader" who tackled some of the biggest challenges faced by the Border Patrol, including the critical transition out of the COVID pandemic. Agent Manny Bayon claims that some illegal immigrants are finding a "back door deal" to gain entry to the U.S. despite new restrictions. The Biden Administration has reported a decline in crossings at the border in the wake of Title 42, despite widespread concerns. Ortiz stated in March that DHS lacked "operational control" of the U.S. southern border and that migration flows in some areas were in a "crisis situation."

Foreign Policy: U.S. Border Chaos Leaves Migrants Fatally Vulnerable
U.S. Border Chaos Leaves Migrants Fatally Vulnerable
Tarqui and his wife are among thousands of migrants who face an uncertain future upon reaching the US border due to new rules that make it harder to apply for asylum. Despite contracting parasites during their trek from Ecuador to Panama, the couple is determined to make it to the US, where they can start a new life. This comes as the Biden administration promises to increase deportations and narrow asylum pathways, creating potential chaos at the US border and along migration routes throughout Central and South America.

The Biden administration has introduced fresh regulations that drastically limit who can apply for asylum in the US and face criminal charges and bans of up to five years if they cross irregularly. Immigrant rights groups argue that these measures will disqualify many migrants who would otherwise qualify for asylum, and the American Civil Liberties Union is preparing to sue. The effects of the policy change have been acutely felt in Metetí, the first town that most migrants reach after crossing the treacherous Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia, where up to 400,000 migrants could cross this year.

DOJ Targets Jim Justice’s Coal Empire As West Virginia Governor Readies 2024 Senate Bid
The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against West Virginia Governor Jim Justice's coal empire, accusing it of accumulating millions in unpaid civil penalties. The lawsuit targets 13 Justice family-owned coal businesses and the governor's adult son and alleges that the businesses posed health and safety hazards and failed to remedy over 130 violations of federal law. The governor, a Republican, is the leading candidate to challenge Democratic Senator Joe Manchin in 2024.

Ex-FBI director James Comey trashes 'crazy' theory feds are out to get Republicans: 'Nutty article of faith'
Former FBI Director James Comey denies allegations that the bureau targets Republicans and insists he has no regrets about the Trump Russia investigation in an interview with CNN. Comey blames Trump and those around him for seeing the FBI as a threat and suggests that the notion that the FBI is a leftist cabal out to get Republicans is "crazy." Republican trust in the FBI has halved in the last decade. Comey reassures that the FBI will be fine in the long run and that the fever around the MAGA world will eventually break.

Harlow confronts Comey over Special Counsel John Durham’s report that launching an investigation into former President Donald Trump’s dealings with Russia was unjustified. Comey says that there is nothing new in the report and that there are no differences between them that would interest the public.

Arizona Secretary of State Candidate Ordered to Pay Legal Fees in 'Groundless' Election Challenge
Arizona Republican candidate Mark Finchem was ordered to pay over $48,000 in attorney fees related to litigation after he challenged the 2022 election results in court. Finchem was ordered to pay $40,000 in attorney fees to his Democrat opponent and now Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and about $7,400 in attorney fees to Gov. Katie Hobbs. Both judges found the lawsuit to be "groundless." The same judge also imposed sanctions on Finchem and his attorney in March, calling Finchem's challenge to the election "groundless" and ordering monetary sanctions under Arizona law, which she said helps discourage lawsuits for which there is "no legitimate basis or fact or law."

FBI Director Wray Doesn’t Have a Leg to Stand on in Contempt Fight
The FBI has become thoroughly partisan and has lost its prestige. Director Chris Wray is about to be held in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena he has no lawful basis to defy. Although Wray believes that giving away information could compromise the bureau’s cultivation of confidential human sources, Congress is entitled to know the information and the FBI has no basis to keep it under wraps.

DHS-Funded Anti-Terror Program Targeting Americans SCRUBS Website
The University of Dayton's PREVENTS-OH program, funded by DHS, removed controversial videos from its website that portrayed conservatives, Christians, and Republicans as neo-Nazis. The program used the "Pyramid of Far-Right Radicalization," which compared former President Trump to a genocidal dictator and accused Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of planning a second Holocaust. MRC Free Speech America uncovered the program and called out the university for using taxpayer funds to target Americans. The university claimed no ties to Biden's DHS, but documents show otherwise, and the university was granted $352,109 by the program.

Has the Rebellion Against McCarthy Over the Debt Ceiling Gone Silent?
McCarthy faces backlash from conservative hard-liners over debt ceiling deal, but rebellion appears to be at bay. House GOP members, including influential conservatives, have urged their fellow party members to support the agreement. However, some conservatives, like Rep. Chip Roy, worry about the push to get the deal through Congress without unanimous consent from all seven Republicans on the House Rules Committee. The agreement was made with McCarthy when conservatives voted for his Speakership, but had not been made public until recently. The running tally of strikes against McCarthy may trigger a more serious response in the future.

House Republicans seek to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress for failing to hand over a declassified document detailing alleged criminal actions by Joe Biden. The FBI responded with a six-page letter justifying its decision to forego congressional oversight. The bureau maintains its commitment to cooperation but has failed to provide the requested report, leading lawmakers to demand accountability.

Trump Attacks Kayleigh McEnany, Prompting Rebuke From The Right
Former President Trump criticized his former press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, after she cited poll numbers that he claimed were false. McEnany made the remarks regarding Iowa poll numbers for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime”. Trump reacted on Truth Social, dismissing her as “milktoast,” and claiming he was 34 points up on DeSantis, not 25. Many conservatives criticized Trump for his attack on McEnany, with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade calling her “one of the best press secretaries ever.”

Reid Frets 'Toy-Sized Mussolini' DeSantis Will Turn US Into Iran, North Korea
MSNBC host Joy Reid warns that if Ron DeSantis is elected president in 2024, America will become like China, Cuba, North Korea, Afghanistan, or Iran. According to Reid, DeSantis wants to micromanage every aspect of citizens' lives, replace university boards, monitor what people read, ban books, ban artistic freedom of speech, and enforce a national six-week abortion ban. Reid characterizes DeSantis's proposals as totalitarianism and says they would require a massive federal investment to control and squash unwanted "woke" ideas.

Utah Republican Rep. Chris Stewart is expected to resign from Congress due to his wife's health. Trump Has Game-Changing Plan to End Huge 'Magnet' for Illegal Immigration and Secure Our Border
Donald Trump plans to prevent children of illegal immigrants from automatically becoming U.S. citizens if he is elected president. Trump will sign an executive order to make this policy. The move is aimed at deterring illegal immigration and ending a major incentive for it. Trump called Joe Biden’s policy of allowing illegal border crossers to storm across the border and their future children to become automatic US citizens "a reward for breaking the laws of the United States." The policy is believed to benefit the illegal parents. Trump described his policy as grounded in sound legal theory and that it would also end the practice of birth tourism.

Fox News: Sunny Hostin, Jane Fonda under fire for bashing White Americans: 'Not making the country better'
Sunny Hostin, Jane Fonda under fire for bashing White Americans: 'Not making the country better'
Liberal elites face backlash over criticism aimed at White men and women in attacks on the "patriarchy." Jane Fonda blamed men and racism for climate change at the Cannes Film Festival, calling for the arrest of oil executives who are "all men," prompting criticism. The Democrats' support is dwindling as a result of identity politics, and "they're taking the beautiful phrase e pluribus unum and abolishing the unum, the unity that has made us a great country," according to Fox News contributor Ari Fleischer.

ABC's Sunny Hostin also received sharp backlash for her remarks targeting White women voters, accusing them of wanting to "protect the patriarchy" by falling "in line" with their husbands' voting patterns. She referred to the book "They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South," seemingly comparing those who went along with their slave-owning husbands to any who continue to support Trump. Kennedy fired back at Hostin for "shaming" mothers and said the liberal ABC host is not bringing anything of value to viewers.

National Review: The Corner: Chris Christie Jumps into the Presidential Pool
The Corner: Chris Christie Jumps into the Presidential Pool
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to announce his run for the 2024 Republican presidential primary next week in New Hampshire. His candidacy seems irrelevant, with his last campaign remembered for the destruction of Marco Rubio's national political aspirations and his haste to endorse Donald Trump afterward in return for a cabinet position that never came. His positioning, according to Axios, will be as a man “who speaks his mind, takes risks and is happy to punch Donald Trump in the nose.” Though he may present a charisma challenge to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in a northeastern retail state like New Hampshire, it's hard not to notice Christie's overweening ego. Christie simply wants to matter; winning or losing are relatively less important so long as he remains a key supporting figure in the story.

WATCH: Actor James Van Der Beek Slams DNC for Coddling Joe Biden
Actor James Van Der Beek criticized the DNC's decision to cancel primary debates and coronate Joe Biden as the 2024 presidential nominee, citing Biden's declining mental state and the lack of a real primary process. Van Der Beek argued that if Biden couldn't finish the campaign, Democrats would be stuck with Kamala Harris, who has an even worse approval rating than Biden. Many Democrats agree that Biden's health and mental degradation is a problem, but are too scared to speak out. The DNC could have avoided silencing its own party members by setting a high bar for debate qualification, but instead chose to cancel the debates arbitrarily.

The New American: Ron DeSantis Dangerously Blurs the Line Between State and Private Action - The New American
Ron DeSantis Dangerously Blurs the Line Between State and Private Action - The New American
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis presents himself as a champion of individual freedom, but has repeatedly blurred the line between state and private action, compromising civil liberties. DeSantis opposed government-imposed vaccine mandates and signed legislation prohibiting vaccination requirements by private employers, and furthermore blocked business owners from asking customers to provide proof of vaccination. His "Individual Freedom Act" dictates private employers’ training practices, and a Florida law requiring social media platforms to carry messages from political candidates was unanimously overturned by three Republican-appointed judges. DeSantis' grandstanding poses a clear threat to individual rights.

Former Mount Hope Police Chief Paul Rickard Runs for Town Supervisor
Paul Rickard, a former police chief, is running for the town supervisor of Mount Hope to apply his leadership skills to benefit his community. He plans to be accessible to residents, enhance government transparency, and maintain a stable tax levy. He also aims to work on ethics reform, preserve agricultural lands, support small-town zoning, and encourage commercial growth that matches the character of Mount Hope.

Rickard is running in the June 27 Republican primary against incumbent supervisor Matthew Howell. He secured endorsements from prominent county legislature leaders, former county legislators, and community members who have faith in his leadership skills. He believes his experience as Mount Hope police chief and director of Hope Not Handcuffs, combined with his political science education and attendance at the Federal Bureau of Intelligence National Academy, make him a candidate who can lead with vision and integrity.

Horowitz: In which Team Trump brags about the worst bill he signed and attacks DeSantis for opposing it
Trump's recent attack ad accuses Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of voting against border wall funding, but fails to mention that the bill Trump signed in March 2018 limited the border wall and funded the worst agencies at record levels. This bill was the critical component to the failure of Trump's domestic policy. Trump knows this as he conceded it was a terrible bill and was forced to later push a government shutdown. Despite this, he signed every other budget bill thereafter with more Democrat than Republican support, which resulted in a lack of a full border wall, and weaponized government agencies flush with cash.

Kevin McCarthy Tamps Down Debt Ceiling Rebellion
Speaker Kevin McCarthy confidently predicts that the debt ceiling bill will pass despite opposition from some members of the House Freedom Caucus. Some Freedom Caucus members criticize the Fiscal Responsibility Act for not doing enough to address America's deficit; however, some conservatives appear to have backed down from their threats to remove McCarthy following a meeting. Rep. Thomas Massie is now supporting the bill as he believes it will allow for more spending cuts in the future.

The bipartisan bill to raise the debt ceiling includes a provision to expedite the completion of the 300-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline from West Virginia to Virginia. The provision in the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 directs federal agencies to authorize outstanding permits for the pipeline and prohibits any court from reviewing their actions. Environmental groups have criticized the inclusion of the resolution in the bill, and Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) plans to offer an amendment to remove it. The bill is expected to get a full House vote Wednesday evening and then head to the Senate for approval.

The media spent over 38 minutes covering the conservative boycott against Target for their pride-themed children's apparel, but didn't report on bomb threats made by an alleged LGBT activist against Target stores. The threats were likely hoaxes and law enforcement has since determined that they were not credible, but the media's sudden silence on the matter speaks volumes. The media is committed to a narrative that portrays the American right as holding a monopoly on political violence, and only reports on domestic terrorism when they can blame it on the right.

Jesse Ventura, one of the first governors in the U.S. to openly support marijuana legalization, was present for the historic day. Possession of cannabis in Minnesota will be limited to two pounds at home and two ounces in public. The bill also includes expunging criminal records of those charged with marijuana-related offenses, processing all cases by August of next year.

House Republicans will vote on Wednesday night on whether to support a bipartisan bill to raise the debt ceiling through January 2025 and avoid a possible debt default. While many members have indicated support, at least three dozen have said they will oppose it, with some of the roughly 40-member House Freedom Caucus urging their GOP colleagues to do the same. Despite this, the bill is still expected to pass with support from moderate Democrats and a bipartisan caucus, though Majority Leader Steve Scalise has been working to rally more Republican support for it.

Christie previously dropped out of the Republican presidential primary in 2016 after performing poorly in New Hampshire but endorsed Trump ahead of Super Tuesday, and was one of the key people who helped prepare Trump for the presidential debates and advised the president throughout his time in office. However, Christie’s break with Trump came after Trump began claiming that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

The lack of political diversity in establishment media stifles true journalism and incites division. Congress investigates cable providers for allegedly dropping popular news channels on political grounds, while Elon Musk's reports expose partisan censorship. Unbiased, fact-based journalism is endangered, and selective coverage manipulates public discourse. Local outlets struggle to compete with corporate behemoths, pumping controversial, partisan views into small town America. America's media establishment is leftward-bent, leaving the Right marginalized and without representative voices. Diplomacy and course correction are needed to restore integrity and authenticity to media, earning the public's trust and protecting free society.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announces plan to buy massive amounts of renewable energy as temperatures rise
California's governor has proposed buying large amounts of renewable energy, such as geothermal and offshore wind, to help keep the state's energy grid from running out of power during peak usage times. The state needs to add about 40 gigawatts of new power over the next decade to meet increasing demand from transitioning away from fossil fuels. While Newsom's proposal has the support of some of the state's largest utilities, publicly-owned utilities fear the state's entrance could drive up prices and increase competition in already-struggling markets. Advocates say California is in a prime position to try the proposal, but it still faces legislative and logistical obstacles.

Ron DeSantis says Hunter Biden 'would have been in jail years ago' if he were a Republican
Ron DeSantis claims that Hunter Biden would have been in jail years ago if he were a Republican due to the "weaponized" bureaucracy in Washington, D.C. that wields authority unevenly depending on its targets. The federal investigation into Hunter Biden's "tax affairs" began in 2018 and is now in its fifth year with suspicious activity reports regarding funds from "China and other foreign nations." Whistleblowers have accused the Biden administration of mishandling the investigation and shielding evidence related to a so-called "criminal scheme" Joe Biden allegedly engaged in as vice president.

Congressman Val Hoyle received campaign donations from cannabis entrepreneurs who were awarded taxpayer-funded grants that she oversaw as commissioner of Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industries. Laura Vega, a co-founder of ENDVR, a non-profit organization that supports preparing motivated individuals to thrive in the cannabis industry, donated $1,000 to Hoyle's campaign days before submitting a grant application to establish an apprenticeship program. The grant was subsequently awarded based on ENDVR's application pledge to create an apprenticeship program for botanical extractionists, despite ENDVR having no track record in job training.

DeSantis says he’ll ‘counterpunch’ against Trump but aims to keep focus on policy rather than personal attacks
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is countering former President Donald Trump's attacks against him as he campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination. DeSantis recently took his first steps on the campaign trail in Iowa, where he criticized Trump's leadership during the pandemic and emphasized his own successes as governor of Florida. Despite Trump's continued attacks, DeSantis maintains that he is a winner and has emphasized his own electability over Trump's. With Trump and DeSantis both campaigning in Iowa this week, the war of words between the two candidates is likely to continue.

Former Trump budget director says GOP lawmaker joined the 'dark side' by voting for Biden-McCarthy deal
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has angered conservatives by being the deciding vote advancing the Fiscal Responsibility Act to the House floor. The Biden-McCarthy agreement suspends the debt limit with no cap through Jan. 1, 2025, while also cutting non-defense spending to near fiscal 2022 levels. It also claws back some money aimed at the Internal Revenue Service and some unspent COVID-19 pandemic funds. Russ Vought, who served as former President Trump’s director of the Office of Management and Budget and opposed the bill, accused Massie of going over to the "dark side."

Tim Scott comes out against McCarthy-Biden debt deal for giving president 'open checkbook'
Sen. Tim Scott opposes the budget deal negotiated between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden, arguing that it gives Biden unlimited spending until the end of his term and does too little to cut back on IRS expansion. Scott praised McCarthy's ability to negotiate with Biden but emphasized that the deal is not in the nation's best interest. Some members of the House Freedom Caucus have agreed to support the bill despite earlier misgivings, but Reps. Ralph Norman and Chip Roy remain vocal detractors.

The final agreement reached between McCarthy and Biden suspends the debt limit with no cap through Jan. 1, 2025, while cutting non-defense spending and proposing non-mandatory caps for the next four years. It also claws back some money aimed at the Internal Revenue Service and some unspent COVID-19 pandemic funds. Despite being touted as a conservative victory by the GOP, some Republican lawmakers remain critical of the bill, citing concerns about the lack of spending cuts and increased reliance on borrowing.

Nebraska's GOP governor signs law enhancing penalties for election worker intimidation
Nevada has signed a new bill into law that could sentence anyone who harasses election workers up to four years in jail. The law is in response to increased scrutiny and threats made towards those working at state and local election offices. As the rate of threatening behaviors towards election workers has increased significantly, the law aims to show support to these workers and better protect them from further attack. Other states such as New Mexico, Vermont, and Oklahoma have also passed similar laws to protect election officials against harassment and intimidation.

The legislation, passed unanimously through both of Nevada’s Democratic-controlled legislative chambers, was a significant campaign promise from Democratic Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar. He cited an exodus of election workers across the state, partly due to increased threats. The new law also makes it a felony to disseminate personal information about an election worker without their consent. Governor Lombardo and Aguilar, who have previously sparred over Lombardo’s proposal to require voter identification, jointly signed the bill. Over half of the top election officials across Nevada’s 17 counties have resigned following the 2020 election due to threats made against them.

Democratic lawmakers in Nevada are looking to punish schools that don't allow biological men to compete in women's sports and use girls' facilities by imposing fines of up to $5,000 per day. Athlete and activist Riley Gaines, who was forced to compete against a transgender swimmer last year, opposes the move, stating that it seeks to put men into women's spaces. Gaines, a 12-time NCAA All-American athlete, urged lawmakers to recognize the differences that exist between the sexes. The proposal will now be sent to Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo for a final decision.

Dem senator slams 'Greater Idaho' movement to absorb conservative rural counties from liberal Oregon
Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley opposes the "Greater Idaho" movement, which is campaigning to have rural Oregon counties incorporated into Idaho, citing several barriers that would make the process difficult. The idea, which seeks to incorporate 13 Oregon counties within Idaho's borders, would require the approval of both state legislatures and the US Congress, but critics argue such a scenario will never happen. Some polling indicates that Idahoans would welcome expanding the state boundary, while others in Oregon feel the idea is divisive, with roughly equal numbers supporting and opposing the proposal.

Former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to launch his presidential campaign next week in Iowa, confirming long-held suspicions that he would run for president in the 2024 elections. Pence will be in a crowded field of Republican presidential contenders including his former boss, President Donald Trump, and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. Despite polling showing him to be a long shot far behind Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Pence is considered a powerful trifecta of having congressional, governor, and administration experience. He also has a network of experienced advisors surrounding him and has spent the past two years building relationships in key early voting states.

Former President Barack Obama expressed concern about the division caused by a divided media during a CBS morning show interview. The left, once supporters of freedom of speech, have adopted fascist-like tactics, such as censorship and “repressive tolerance,” to silence opposing views they consider to be “hate speech,” resulting in a dark new orthodoxy that demands adherence to their woke narrative. However, Anglo-American political culture has been well-served by an adversarial political culture that encourages debate, and a truly democratic society is not served by autocrats who dictate what people can hear and say.

The Corner: Why Pride Onesies Are Wrong
Phil Klein of NRO's tweeted about Kohl's producing a children's clothing line for Pride Month. Madeleine Kearns responded, questioning why LGBTQ ideas are projected onto children's clothing. Sexual innuendos on adult clothing are one thing, but projecting these onto children's clothing is another. Selling political messaging on a baby's onesie is equivalent to a seventh political bumper sticker on the back of a rusting minivan. Despite the controversy, it's just a shirt, and a baby's onesie isn't a billboard for his parent's ideological points. The images show Pride items discounted at 50%, so there is something deeply wrong with paying $10 for a onesie.

Target faced backlash from conservatives over their sale of LGBT-themed products, including those from British designer Erik Carnell, known for her controversial Satan-themed items. Target pulled some merchandise and moved others to less prominent places in response to the controversy. Carnell criticized what she called "rainbow capitalism," arguing that businesses that engage in activism should not back down from political statements, regardless of consumer reaction. Despite creating Satanic-inspired designs, Carnell clarified that she does not believe in Satan and sees it as a metaphor.

Retail giant Target promotes LGBTQ products while downplaying other offerings in light of "threats" made against their employees. This is part of a larger trend, where big businesses take political stances to attract attention and align themselves with progressives, despite the fact that these same progressives are often enemies of the free market. The dangerous "stakeholderism" movement, pushed by the Business Roundtable and the World Economic Forum, seeks to replace shareholder capitalism with stakeholder capitalism, which would allow executives to insulate themselves from market forces and accountability to shareholders. Conservative activists are pushing back against businesses that promote a progressive agenda and have vowed to boycott those that fail to promote traditional family values.

The three other missing residents are believed to be safe, but the city did initially plan to begin demolishing the unstable building, which has been used as apartments, and tenants have been allowed to remain there despite falling bricks. However, officials delayed demolition following the rescue of a woman, while they attempt to establish if others may still be inside. Protesters have called for a proper sweep of the building before demolition begins and the city has filed an enforcement action against the owner of the property.

Meanwhile, the situation worsened when the company's market value fell from $74 billion to $61.77 billion due to the negative press. Evans insisted that companies that ignore the increasing diversity of the country miss out on a massive market share.

In California, it's kill the goats, keep the union hogs happy.
California's new labor regulations are making it nearly impossible to employ Peruvian goatherds to graze on hillsides, thus preventing wildfires. While goats can eat a variety of vegetation, the costs of providing goat-grazing services have soared due to the proposed changes, bringing the monthly salary of herders from $3,730 to $14,000, putting many companies out of business. Targeted grazing is an eco-friendly alternative to chemical herbicides or weed-whacking machines. But Labor advocate Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, a legislator union boss, wants to charge companies $14,000 a month for the job, which is already paying Peruvian goatherders well, while mobile trailers provide their accommodation on-site, with no expenses for food, housing, and phone service.

Many lawyers believe that simplifying the language they use, stripping out technical terms, should make their work easier to understand and less frustrating for clients.

This led to alleged threats and confrontational behavior against employees, with Target removing certain items from stores to diffuse the situation. Alabama governor sets July date for lethal injection following troubled past executions
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has set a July date for the state's first lethal injection execution since pausing them last year for an internal review. The review resulted in changes to give the state more time to establish an intravenous line and more time to conduct legal appeals. James Barber was convicted of the 2001 murder of 75-year-old Dorothy Epps and is scheduled to be executed between midnight on July 20 and 6 a.m. on July 21. This comes after two previous executions had to be cancelled because of difficulties in establishing IV access.

Alabama has banned transgender female athletes from participating in women's college sports, citing “fairness,” and setting the stage for continued legal battles over LGBTQ rights in the state. This comes as Alabama sets a July date for the state's first lethal injection execution since pausing them last year for an internal review. These moves have sparked controversy and continue to highlight divisive social issues in the state.

British Officials Are ‘Legitimate Military Target,’ Warns Former Russian President
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that British public officials are now “legitimate military target” because of the UK’s support for Ukraine, which he claimed amounted to an “undeclared war” against Russia. Medvedev’s comments followed a statement by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly that Ukraine has the right to defend itself and project force beyond its borders. The comments came after drone attacks on Moscow, which Russia has blamed on Ukraine, and which Ukrainian officials have expressed approval of. The moves represent a shift in the conflict, which has seen increasing incursions into Russia by Ukrainian forces in recent months.

Sudan's Military Says It Has Suspended Its Participation in Talks With Paramilitary Rival
Sudan's government military suspended talks with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday, protesting against the paramilitary group's "repeated violations" of the ceasefire agreement. The United States and Saudi Arabia have been attempting to mediate between the two forces, which have been fighting for weeks for control of the African state. Brig. Nabil Abdalla, a spokesman for Sudan's military, stated that the government armed forces want to see the full implementation of the US-Saudi-brokered truce before continuing talks. The RSF responded by stating that it "unconditionally backs the Saudi-US initiative."

Israel's Mossad says retired agent was among 4 people who died when boat sank in Italy
A former Mossad agent was among four killed when a boat sank off the coast of Italy. The ex-operative was on the craft with 22 others, including two Italian intelligence agents and a Russian crew member, when it capsized during a sudden storm. The Israeli prime minister's office extended their condolences to the unnamed agent's family. It is unclear why the group was on the vessel.

A court in Libya has tried 51 people for being members of ISIS, sentencing 23 to death. The accused were accused of being members of the terrorist group in the north African country. The trial was carried out fleetingly due to the delicate stability situation in the area. The death sentences will be referred to the Mufti, a senior Islamic authority in Libya, for approval; it is not known when the sentences might be carried out.

Fox News: Putin says drone attacks on Moscow are attempt by Ukraine 'to intimidate Russia'
Putin says drone attacks on Moscow are attempt by Ukraine 'to intimidate Russia'
Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of attempting to intimidate Russia via drone attacks on Moscow. Eight drones targeted the Russian capital early on 29 May, but were shot down or diverted with electronic jammers. Putin said the strikes were a sign of terrorism by Ukraine, and claimed that Moscow's air defence "worked in a satisfactory way", but acknowledged that gaps existed. Some of the drone debris hit an area where Putin has a residence.

On the same day, Russia launched a pre-dawn raid on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv. At least 20 Shahed explosive drones were struck down, and one person killed and seven wounded. The Kyiv Military Administration reported that a high-rise building caught fire in the Holosiiv district after being hit by either debris from drones or interceptor missiles, causing over 20 people to be evacuated and leaving fears of further casualties. Falling debris also caused a fire in a private house and set three cars ablaze.

The Stans Can’t Play Both Sides Anymore
Central Asian countries are strengthening their ties with both China and Russia, which has limited their maneuverability in international relations. The countries’ connection to Russia through the Eurasian Economic Union has led to increased economic relations with Russia, while Moscow has also provided security assistance. Despite China’s support for Central Asian countries, it remains uncertain if Beijing would step in to help against regional problems. The governments of Central Asian countries have sought to balance against Russia by strengthening ties with China, but the two countries are increasingly coordinating their aims in the region, making it difficult for Central Asia to balance against them.

South Africa Gives Putin Immunity to Attend ‘World-Changing’ BRICS Summit
South Africa has granted diplomatic immunity to all attending the upcoming BRICS summit, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. The country signed the Rome Statute in 2002, obliging it to arrest Putin on charges of war crimes in Ukraine; however, the granting of diplomatic immunity protects him from arrest. The BRICS summit is due to take place from 22-24 August and meetings of heads of state and foreign affairs ministers from the BRICS bloc of countries are scheduled for several South African cities.

Meanwhile, a rocket launched from North Korea early Wednesday morning put neighboring South Korea and Japan on high alert before ultimately ending in failure.

South Africa looks to grant Putin diplomatic immunity for BRICS summit despite outstanding ICC arrest warrant
South Africa may grant Russian President Vladimir Putin diplomatic immunity to attend a BRICS economic bloc summit in August despite an outstanding warrant for his arrest issued by the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed in Ukraine. Any ICC member nation Putin travels to would be compelled to seize him, though South Africa is apparently willing to skirt its international obligations. Russia has increasingly looked to bolster ties with countries like South Africa as relations with the West remain tense amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. It remains unclear if Putin will actually be able to attend the summit, though South Africa has reportedly been looking into the wording of the Rome Statute for any loopholes allowing him to visit without arrest.

Reports surfaced in late April suggesting that South Africa was considering leaving the ICC after the warrant for Putin's arrest, though President Cyril Ramaphosa walked back this threat and established an inter-ministerial committee to look into the language of the statute and how it must be applied. South Africa has issued immunities for officials attending international conferences "irrespective of the level of participation," but said "these immunities do not override any warrant that may have been issued by any international tribunal against any attendee of the conference." The development comes as South Africa drills with Russia amid failed Washington efforts to solidify African allies, and as China and Russia eclipse US arms sales to the continent.

The United States lacks effective tools to combat intellectual property theft by China and prevent the transfer of critical technology, according to Paul Rosen, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. The Chinese Communist Party is involved in anti-competitive and free-market practices and the US lacks adequate non-security tools to defend national interests. The US will prioritise national security over economic development but needs more tools to do so. Policymakers agreed that China poses a real and growing threat and that more must be done to counter that threat. The policies of several decades have failed US citizens and benefited multinational corporations, creating an imbalance in favour of China. The US must create more opportunities for tech companies to operate on its soil and not transfer business to China to ensure economic security for its people.

Bankers and Regulators Fail Money and Banking 101
During the 2023 crisis, banks failed due to holding too much long-term fixed-rate debt, including U.S. Treasuries, demonstrating poor management and decision-making. Regulators must closely scrutinize the quality of management at established banks to prevent incompetent bankers from running financial intermediaries. Banks must diversify their depositors and borrowers to manage liquidity and credit risk and face interest-rate risk due to changes in the value of assets and liabilities. Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank failed due to wealthy and cliquish investors, and inappropriately managing their interest-rate-sensitive assets and liabilities. Other large commercial banks also rely on a few large depositors and long-term assets, necessitating careful regulation.

The United States has been in a debt-ceiling crisis, with Democrats looking to raise the limit and Republicans opposing it due to certain debt issues remaining unresolved. If the debt ceiling is not raised, Congress can suspend it or allow the Treasury to spend more than the limit for a limited time using available cash, including Treasury bonds in employee retirement accounts. If no agreement is reached, a default would result in worldwide consequences including a reduction in spending on programs such as Social Security and Medicare and a potential reduction in pay for the military. The U.S. dollar is currently the world's reserve currency, and its potential loss of value would cause other countries' monetary systems to lose value as well.

What Slowdown? Economy Continues to Outperform, Raising Odds of Rate Hike Next Week
Canadian economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.1% in Q1 2023, beating the federal agency's forecast. Preliminary data suggests that the economy expanded by 0.2% in April and experts speculate that the Bank of Canada will raise interest rates again, potentially as early as next week's policy decision. Economists note that growth in exports and household spending contributed to Q1 growth, but inventory accumulations were slower and declines were seen in household and business investments in machinery and equipment. The bank paused its hiking cycle earlier this year, but may opt to increase rates again in July if growth persists and inflation remains high.

Debt ceiling deal's biggest loser is the American people. Republicans, Dems hell-bent on driving us into debt
The recent deal to raise the debt limit fails to address America's addiction to out-of-control spending, and does not include legitimate spending cuts. Republicans in the House of Representatives had President Biden on the defensive, with common sense conservative messaging resonating deeply with hardworking taxpayers. The negotiated Biden-McCarthy swampy agreement is a flawed bill that kicks the can down the road, fails to get back every cent of the funds that were intended to combat COVID-19, and adds $4 trillion to the national debt in return for little in the way of spending cuts. This agreement ought to be rejected.

'Big Short' Investor Warns of Potential $200 Billion Housing Market Crash Due to Underestimated Flood Risks
Renowned investor Dave Burt warns that the US mortgage market underestimates the risk of flooding, posing a systemic risk and potentially catalyzing another housing market crash similar to 2008. DeltaTerra Capital's studies show that 20% of US homes have significant exposure to a pricing discrepancy due to flood risks, which could devalue the housing market by up to $200 billion. Last month, US new home sales rose to a seasonally adjusted high of 683,000 units, the highest since March 2022, indicating the housing market's health. However, sales could be revised lower, and if lenders fail to acknowledge the potential consequences of flood risks, a price adjustment may be imminent.

US home prices increased by 0.4% nationwide month over month for March following a similar increase in February. This marks the second month of gains after seven consecutive months of price declines. Whilst nationwide prices were 0.7% year-over-year higher, they were lower than the 2.1% annual gain seen in February. S&P has seen stark regional differences with Miami home prices up 7.7% whilst costs in Tampa, Florida, and Charlotte, North Carolina, are up nearly 5%. In places like Seattle and San Francisco, prices fell between 11-12% YoY. With inflation and limited supply adding to the problems, experts suggest that mortgage rates will remain between 5-6% over the next year.

Political commentator Matt Walsh criticizes the new live-action remake of Disney's "The Little Mermaid," calling it creatively bankrupt and ill-made. He specifically pans a new song added to the film soundtrack titled "The Scuttlebutt" and accuses the company of relying too heavily on woke politics instead of entertainment. He notes the decision to cast a black actress as Ariel has been used as a shield against criticism and says reviewers are afraid of being called racists. Despite criticism, the movie has still received high ratings and made $117 million in its first weekend, falling short of predictions.

The decline of the 30 Rimfire cartridges followed a familiar pattern, gradually becoming obsolete as centerfire cartridges gained widespread popularity and a more favored choice for self-defense was the .32 Rimfire cartridge.

Liver, insects, sardines — oh my!: 8 'gross' foods that nutritionists say you should eat
Registered dieticians are encouraging people to rethink "gross" foods perceived as offputting, such as offal and fermented foods, stating many have numerous health benefits. The perception of such foods as "gross" is often shaped by cultural and psychological factors, rather than by anything inherently distasteful about them. Nutritionists argue that "slimy, smelly, chunky" are not reasons enough to overlook the nutritional value of certain foods, such as organ meats, that are high in essential vitamins and minerals. They suggest adding tremella mushrooms to stir-fries for texture or using cricket flour in baked goods to add a protein boost.

Over 300 COVID-related medical papers have been withdrawn from research journals since 2020 due to scientific errors and ethical violations, according to watchdog group Retraction Watch. Some papers were published in highly influential publications such as the Lancet and Science. Preprints are rarely retracted by journals because "the server made no claim to have peer-reviewed and certified the scientific content in the first place," but they will be removed "in instances of fraud, ethics violations, dangerous material, or legal issues." Many of the retracted papers were found to be in violation of ethical guidelines. Grødeland said that some research journals compromised ethical standards to approve more COVID-related publications.

Why men should sit down to pee
Most German men prefer to sit down when they pee due to its favorable urodynamic profile, according to a survey. The survey showed that 62% of German men sit down compared to 50% of Swedes, 34% of Italians, and 23% of Brits. However, physicists suggest that splashing only affects those standing up and makes it difficult for them to ensure that every drop of urine lands in the toilet. Nonetheless, it should be noted that sitting down does lead to a few drops getting on one's bottom and bidet-toilets may be an option to remedy this.

LA County handing out free pipes to smoke crack, meth, opioids: report
Los Angeles County is distributing free pipes for smoking drugs like crack, methamphetamine, and opioids as part of its harm reduction effort to reduce drug overdoses, along with clean needles and other supplies. However, this move is facing opposition from some community leaders who liken crack pipe giveaways to assisted suicide. Harm reduction advocates note that free, clean pipes help minimize infections and transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C in users who cut their lips on broken, reused glass, and can help users move from injecting drugs to smoking them, which is safer. The harmful drug use prevention initiative has increased its budget from $5.4 million to $31.5 million in recent years, and more than half of the nearly 1,500 homeless people who overdosed on drugs from 2020 to 2021 tested positive for fentanyl.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, a self-described "pro-life" Republican, signed legislation codifying protections for out-of-state abortion patients and in-state providers, enshrining an executive order issued by his predecessor last year before he lost the election. The law bars state agencies from assisting out-of-state investigations that may lead to prosecuting abortion patients and prevents medical boards and commissions from disciplining or disqualifying doctors who provide abortions. Lombardo's decision came after he initially promised to repeal the executive order before changing his stance and pledging to uphold it. Two Republican women joined Democrats in supporting the bill when it was advanced in the Nevada state Senate last month, exposing intra-party divisions over the handling of abortion legislation.

Assisted suicide 'profoundly Christian,' former archbishop says in break with church
Former archbishop of Canterbury, Lord George Carey, has urged British MPs to debate a law regarding assisted dying, claiming that helping terminally ill people end their lives is "profoundly Christian." His view on assisted dying is at odds with the position of the church, which holds that "it is essential that both the law and medical practice embrace a presumption in favor of life." Lord Carey argued that assisted dying should be available "only for those who show a clear minded and persistent resolution to seek it," but that such is "an act of great generosity, kindness and human love to help those when it is the will of the only person that matters — the sufferer himself." He went on to describe as "a strange situation" that a patient has the right to decline life-sustaining treatment but does not have the right to accept life-ending medicine "that would allow them to die in peace."

NASA UFO hearing: Experts weigh in on if there's enough evidence to prove alien existence
NASA held a meeting to discuss UFO sightings, acknowledging that there have been many unusual incidents, but the data available from civilian, government and commercial sectors has been inconclusive. Speakers at the meeting said the destigmatization of UFO reporting and discussions may well be a turning point, although members of the panel and the Department of Defense's team have reportedly been harassed and chastised for their work. NASA and the Pentagon are working on separate UAP studies (unidentified anomalous phenomena).

NASA's independent study team is set to release its final report, expected by the end of July. The Pentagon's newly formed All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office is investigating over 800 cases. The office's director said that only 2-5% of the cases were "truly anomalous" and that the incidents being investigated were "anything not readily understandable to the operator or the censor." The speakers suggested that while there will be no immediate answers, time and research would provide greater understanding in the future.
