The Epoch Times: Uganda Passes 'Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023' Into Law, With Death Penalty in Some Cases
Uganda Passes 'Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023' Into Law, With Death Penalty in Some Cases
The President of Uganda has signed into law a bill criminalising homosexuality; more than 30 of Africa's 54 countries have already criminalised homosexuality, with Uganda having a colonial-era law which makes sexual activity "against the order of nature" a criminal act. The new law increases the maximum penalty for homosexual acts to life imprisonment, whilst also imposing a death penalty in some cases of 'aggravated homosexuality'. Furthermore, the promotion of homosexuality is now liable to be punished, with those found guilty potentially facing up to 20 years of prison time. The new legislation has faced significant criticism worldwide, including from the UN and Joe Biden, and the discussion of sanctions against anyone involved in committing serious human rights abuses or corruption is being considered by the US.
