The Epoch Times: Mining Billionaire Says Too Much Fossil Fuels Leading to Inflation
Mining magnate and former Fortescue Metals CEO, Andrew Forrest, has blamed an overreliance on fossil fuels, particularly coal, for Australia’s high energy prices. Forrest believes transitioning to renewables is the answer to delivering the cheapest and most reliable form of energy. The comments come in response to domestic energy price hikes, set to rise further over the 2023-24 financial year, with small businesses forecast to take the brunt of the increases. Some argue that environmental, social and governance policies are causing “greenflation” worldwide whilst others believe a greater share of renewables in domestic power grids drives down prices.
German Economist Isabel Schnabel considers the movement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a driving force behind “greenflation” due to the high cost of renewables as well as the high demand and rarity of metals like copper, lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Meanwhile, ESG policy advocates believe that the current cost of renewable energy is due to its limited share in the Australian grid and argue that as investment and supply increase, prices will fall. Energy Minister Chris Bowen has cited a study that reveals wind and solar, if at a large enough scale, are the cheapest sources of energy generation available, underlining the need for global investment in renewable energy sources to reduce emissions and put downward pressure on power prices.
