The Epoch Times: What's Inside McCarthy's Debt Ceiling Deal With Biden
Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden have reached a deal to raise the debt ceiling, suspending it until 2025. The package meets several key GOP demands including capping spending on non-defense items, bolstering work requirements for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and ending the Biden administration's pause on student loan payments. Many in the GOP caucus are unhappy with the package, but McCarthy maintains that it puts the country on a different and positive trajectory.

Red State: Spilled Milk: Missing out on School Contract Threatens Last Producer in Southern Nevada
Ponderosa Dairies, Southern Nevada's only milk producer, faces significant challenges due to inflation and industry consolidation. The dairy's bid for a contract with Clark County School District was impeded by a cooperative owned by Dairy Farmers of America resulting in nearly a 15 percent reduction in the price paid to the farm. Rising fuel costs and inflation have added to the financial burden. General Manager Ed Goedhart warns that Ponderosa Dairies is already losing money and that they cannot survive much longer.
The pricing of milk has been regulated since the 1930s through federal marketing orders set by the USDA. Dairy cooperatives have the ability to bypass these pricing regulations and set private agreements on the price of raw milk and transportation costs. Ponderosa Dairies, despite being part of a cooperative itself, views industry consolidation as a threat. They aim to secure a contract with the school district to maintain a sustainable local business model and reduce costs associated with transporting milk. Goedhart warns that once a place like Ponderosa Dairies shuts down, it cannot be turned back on.
Fox News: Biden, McCarthy reach debt ceiling deal to avoid default: here’s what’s in it
President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have reached a budget deal to avert a potential U.S. default just ahead of the June 5 deadline. The agreement would keep nondefense spending roughly flat in the 2024 fiscal year, fund medical care for veterans exposed to toxic substances, and expand some work requirements for SNAP. It would also rescind about $30 billion in unspent coronavirus relief money and put an end to a pause on student loan repayment.

The Epoch Times: Josef Newgarden Wins His First Indy 500, Gives Roger Penske His 19th Victory
Josef Newgarden wins the Indianapolis 500, giving team owner Roger Penske his 19th victory in the race. Newgarden had been empty-handed in 11 consecutive years and the win was crucial considering it was the one race that his boss cared the most about. After the race was red-flagged for the third time in the final 16 laps, Newgarden was moved from fourth to second, and he took advantage of his improved position to slingshot around Marcus Ericsson on the restart. Ericsson finished second in a Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, followed by Santino Ferrucci. The first American to win the Indy 500 since 2016, Newgarden led five of the 200 laps and beat Ericsson in the fourth-closest finish in 107 years with a margin of victory of .0974 seconds.

A black bear broke into a Connecticut bakery and helped itself to 60 cupcakes, scaring workers. The bear charged at one of the employees, who backed out of the garage and ran. The bear eventually left after a worker honked a car horn. Although no one was hurt, bear-human interactions are increasing in Connecticut, with a record high of 67 reports of bears entering homes in 2022. There are between 1,000 and 1,200 black bears living in Connecticut, according to the state environmental agency.
The Federalist Papers: 'Shark Tank' Star Responds to Target's Satanic Wokeism: This Is a 'Lesson for Corporate America'
Businessman Kevin O'Leary has warned that US companies must avoid getting involved in culture war issues. He told Fox News that Bud Light and Target had made a “huge mistake” by supporting the “groomer agenda” and radical transgenderism respectively, losing billions of dollars in market share as a result. According to O’Leary, social media acts as a hyper “polling system” through which millions of people react immediately to news.
Brands should concentrate on selling their products and stay clear of sticky social and political concerns, argued O’Leary. He pointed out that delivering partisan messages risks alienating 50% of their target demographic. The UK’s Daily Mail reported that, following a decision to remove its “pride” and “transgender” line of clothing for children from its stock, Target received bomb threats from radical leftists, underlining, in O’Leary’s view, the perils of getting involved in culture wars.
The Epoch Times: Rewind, Review, and Re-Rate: ‘Hard Boiled’
In 1992, John Woo directed "Hard Boiled" starring Chow Yun-fat, a Hong Kong police detective battling triad arms dealers in a beautiful tea house. The film featured innovative action techniques such as slow-motion “bullet-time” action takes, and became Woo's action opus.
