The attacks were carried out in several waves and it appears to have been the first deadly attack on Kyiv in May. Falling debris killed a 41-year-old man. The attacks were mostly aimed at military and critical infrastructure sites, with several districts of Kyiv suffering during the overnight assault. This occurred after combat clashes appeared to have eased around the besieged city of Bakhmut in southeastern Ukraine. It is unclear what prompted the attacks, but Ukraine believes them to be connected with its history and the "insecure Russians". France has strongly condemned the act as a war crime and called for punishment.

Belarus' state secretary threatened to use tactical nuclear weapons in a warning to the West not to cross strategic "red lines" with Russia. Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko allowed Russia to use its territory to launch the war in Ukraine. Belarus and Russia signed a deal confirming the weapons deployment, which will remain under the control of the Kremlin. U.S. officials believe Russia has around 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons designed for military forces to use on the battlefield against enemy troops. The weapons include aircraft-carried bombs, short-range missile warheads, and artillery rounds. U.S. State Department officials condemned Russia transporting the weapons in a briefing last week, calling it the latest example of irresponsible behavior.
