The Epoch Times: Judge Blocks South Carolina's Heartbeat Abortion Ban for Now
A US judge has temporarily blocked an abortion ban in South Carolina, pending review by the state Supreme Court. The legislation, banning most abortions after a heartbeat is detected, was signed into law by Republican Governor Henry McMaster on Thursday but came into immediate effect. The ruling means that the previous South Carolina abortion restrictions that allowed abortions up to 22 weeks of gestation remain in place. The latest ban had passed the state legislature on 23 May, but the Supreme Court had struck down a similar law in January 2023, deeming it to be unconstitutional.
