The Epoch Times: Feds Warned About Risks of Delaying 24 Sussex Decision Almost a Year Before It Closed
Feds Warned About Risks of Delaying 24 Sussex Decision Almost a Year Before It Closed
The closure of the deteriorating 24 Sussex Drive, the former official residence of Canada's prime ministers, has been officially announced due to disrepair and a rodent infestation. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have already moved out into a different official residence, Rideau Cottage. The federal cabinet is yet to make a decision on whether to restore the heritage property, prompting concerns of further delay which would pose a risk to the physical integrity of the building and undermine the National Capital Commission’s fiduciary responsibility. The property has serious limitations in terms of privacy, accessibility, and support spaces for official functions.

Officials blame the decay of the 34-room mansion on successive governments' reluctance to spend money on repairing and maintaining the house. The federal government is now reviewing several options for the future of the property, including a recommended approach and a list of pros and cons. A 2021 report from the commission estimated that there is $36 million worth of deferred maintenance at 24 Sussex, excluding security or other infrastructure upgrades. The closure of the property, which will continue for at least the next year, will require an investment of $4.3 million and will interrupt the outdoor receptions.

Gov. Sarah Sanders on how she protects Arkansas kids from ‘radical left’ agenda that blue-state parents face
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is signing bills to protect children from the "radical left woke mob" that parents in Democrat-run states worry about. Sanders signed a bill in March prohibiting transgender students from using the bathroom of their choice in public schools. She's also against allowing biological men who identify as women to compete in sports with biological women. In March, Sanders signed a comprehensive education reform bill, "Arkansas LEARNS," which puts kids on a "pathway to prosperity and success," broadens school choice, and provides vouchers through "Education Freedom Accounts."

Additionally, Sanders signed a bill into law in April that requires social media platforms to get parental permission for new user registration of minors. This will empower parents to help protect their children from harmful aspects of social media platforms. Sanders believes that parents should be paying attention to how and where their kids are educated and making sure that their kids are being educated in a way that reflects their values.

Fox News: OK lawmakers override governors' veto of bill allowing students to wear Native American regalia at graduation
OK lawmakers override governors' veto of bill allowing students to wear Native American regalia at graduation
Oklahoma Legislature overrides Governor Kevin Stitt's veto to allow Native American students to wear tribal regalia during graduation ceremonies in public schools, colleges, universities and technology centers. The measure takes effect on July 1 but prohibits weapons such as a bow and arrow, tomahawk or war hammer. Governor Stitt vetoed the bill earlier this month stating that the decision should be up to individual districts and could lead to other groups demanding special favours. The bill had strong support from many Oklahoma-based tribes and Native American citizens.

Lawmakers in Oklahoma also overrode vetoes of several other measures, including one adding experts on Native American health to a wellness council and another allowing for the existence of the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority, the state's Public Broadcasting Service affiliate. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. thanked the Legislature and stated that he hopes Governor Stitt hears the message that his hostility to tribes is a dead end and that the majority of Oklahomans believe in respecting the rights of Native Americans. A Native American former student sued Broken Arrow Public Schools and two employees earlier this month after she was forced to remove an eagle feather from her graduation cap prior to her high school commencement ceremony.

Fox News: Alabama lawmakers approve one-time tax rebate of $150 per person, $300 to marries couples
Alabama lawmakers approve one-time tax rebate of $150 per person, $300 to marries couples
Alabama lawmakers approved a bill to offer a one-time tax rebate of $150 per person or $300 per married couple, which is estimated to cost the state $393 million. The rebate bill will not give money to those who do not file tax returns, and some people argue that the funds will not go to those who need it the most. The legislation is part of an appropriations package which also includes a nearly $9 billion education trust fund budget and the creation of a new $300 million savings account for the education budget. The plan to lower the state sales tax on food from 4% to 2% was also advanced by the House of Representatives.

Wisconsin's assembly speaker announced that the Republican party will no longer negotiate on the bill to increase state aid to local governments. Alabama lawmakers chose a rebate that is significant but still affordable after concerns were raised about the cost of a larger rebate on the education budget. Legislators are trying to make strategic choices with the $2.8 billion budget surplus, but could not fulfill every tax cut and funding request because of concerns about an eventual economic downturn. The proposed rebate will cover 1.9 million tax filers in the state.

Inflation Unexpectedly Surges Higher, Putting Pressure on Fed To Keep Hiking
Inflation rates continue to rise in the US, with the personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index up 0.4 percent in April, higher than economists' predictions of a 0.3 percent increase. This marks a faster annual pace of inflation than the previous month, with core PCE prices also up by 0.4 percent and up 4.7 percent compared to the previous year. The Federal Reserve, which uses PCE as the basis for its two percent annual inflation target, may decide to implement another rate hike at the next meeting in June, or to pause and assess the impact of earlier hikes on the economy.

Financial distress among Americans also rose, with 35% of adults reporting they were worse off financially in 2022, the highest level since 2014. The dip in retirement expectations is happening amid concerns about the economy's health, with Gallup finding that 75% of Americans believe the economy is worsening.

Starbucks will close its three unionized locations in Ithaca, New York, leaving 38 employees without jobs. The shutdown follows a strike by workers earlier this year. Evan Sunshine, an Ithaca Starbucks barista and partner organizer for Starbucks Workers United, claims that the shutdowns are a direct result of the stores' unionization. Starbucks has so far failed to negotiate a contract with any of its 300 unionized locations across the US. Starbucks Workers United has launched a formal complaint before the National Labor Relations Board, accusing the company of violating labor laws in its treatment of the Ithaca Starbucks workers.
