Red State: Trump Towers in Iowa Poll With 42-Point Lead, but Florida Is the Decisive Battleground in DeSantis' Nomination Quest
Trump Towers in Iowa Poll With 42-Point Lead, but Florida Is the Decisive Battleground in DeSantis' Nomination Quest
Trump holds a massive lead in Iowa with 62% of support while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis received 20%. DeSantis' advisors have downplayed Trump's early lead with skepticism, projecting that Trump's support wouldn't go lower than 35% in the primary, but instead create an opportunity for DeSantis to capture a larger share of the remaining 65% of the vote. Florida is expected to be a key state that could determine the outcome of the nomination contest, operating on a winner-takes-all system. Trump is also polling above Biden in a hypothetical general election.

Fox News: Friend of Justice Clarence Thomas says he never broke ethics rules and has receipts to prove it
Friend of Justice Clarence Thomas says he never broke ethics rules and has receipts to prove it
A friend of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas claims there is evidence Thomas did not violate ethics rules by not disclosing vacation trips with GOP donor Harlan Crow. Thomas' friendship with Crow allowed him to travel on Crow's jet and yacht, as well as stay on his vacation property. Attorney Mark Paoletta, who has defended Thomas, says he was in compliance with ethics rules and there is a paper trail proving it. The Judicial Conference said Thomas had acted properly by not disclosing the trips.

Paoletta also stated that Thomas had complied with the ethics law when he didn't disclose trips under personal hospitality exceptions, and specifically said that "Justice Thomas acted properly in not disclosing" and that there was nothing to support allegations that he had willfully or improperly failed to disclose travel reimbursements. Judicial Conference is designated as the body to "issue interpretive guidance, review reports, and determine compliance for the judiciary" under the Ethics in Government Act. The interpretation of the Judicial Conference on record suggests that Thomas was correct not to disclose the trips.

The Federalist: Legalized Polygamy Is The Logical Consequence Of Obergefell
Legalized Polygamy Is The Logical Consequence Of Obergefell
The New York Times recently published an article exploring the legal recognition of polyamorous relationships in Somerville, Massachusetts, where domestic partnership rights have been granted to people in such relationships. Supporters of non-monogamous relationships believe that a process similar to that for gay marriage is happening for their cause, however, both the majority opinion and liberals cheering the 2015 gay marriage ruling sought to assure the nation that its implications were limited to equal protection of two individuals. The laws passed by the Somerville City Council are antithetical to the foundational principles of Western civilisation and the best interests of families and children, but they have the right to think their actions are the logical and inevitable consequence of Obergefell.

Euromaidan Press: Sweden to consider training Ukrainian pilots on Gripen fighter jets if asked, says defense minister – CNN
Sweden to consider training Ukrainian pilots on Gripen fighter jets if asked, says defense minister – CNN
Sweden's Defense Minister has stated that Sweden will allow Ukrainian pilots to evaluate Gripen fighter jets if requested, despite currently having no plans to supply Ukraine with the aircraft. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry had requested a "restricted operational assessment" of the Swedish fighter jet, and the countries are working to meet the necessary criteria. This comes as part of Sweden's eagerness to support Ukraine in all ways possible.

Foreign Policy: Guatemala’s Anti-Corruption Star Dims
Guatemala’s Anti-Corruption Star Dims
Guatemala, once celebrated for its strong anti-corruption stance, now faces a political crisis as it prepares for elections, with evidence of democratic backsliding emerging as leading candidates are disqualified and journalists are targeted by the government. The use of "lawfare tactics" by the electoral court has already compromised the vote's integrity. The country has declined significantly from being an anti-corruption success story to now experiencing a crackdown on governance that has led to a decline in democratic values.

National Review: The Corner: Germany: A Recession after All
The Corner: Germany: A Recession after All
Europe coped with higher energy prices resulting from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, thanks to the flow of LNG from the US and Qatar, and a mild winter. However, Germany's hope of escaping recession has been extinguished, as its output shrank by 0.3% from Q4 2021. Higher inflation has affected consumers' willingness to spend and weakened Germany's industrial sector. The economy ministry's plan for a subsidised industrial power price was rejected by the finance ministry due to limited budget availability.

Forbes: Iran Urges Asian Partners To Drop The Dollar From Bilateral Trade
Iran Urges Asian Partners To Drop The Dollar From Bilateral Trade
The Asian Clearing Union (ACU) is launching a new cross-border financial messaging system as an alternative to Swift. The system is being set up by a group of central banks, including India, Pakistan, and Iran, that agreed to create the system at an ACU meeting in Tehran last month. The new system will be customised for the ACU group after Iranian banks were excluded from the Swift network due to US sanctions. Russia and Belarus are also barred from using the platform.

Iran has been building bilateral ties with Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both countries have been working to reduce the use of US dollars, and Russia has become the first country to open an office in Tehran. Iran is still actively seeking to trade with around 150 countries around the world, with its main trading partners including China, Iraq, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Recently, Iran's trade using dollars has dropped to less than 10% of their trade two years ago.

Fox News: Biden's strident green energy push is really energy destruction that hurts Americans
Biden's strident green energy push is really energy destruction that hurts Americans
University students across the US have been calling for divestment from fossil fuels. However, fossil fuels provide over 60% of US energy and support nearly 11 million jobs, contributing more than 7% to the nation’s GDP. Divesting from fossil fuels would dissolve economic opportunity and quality of life for more than 330 million Americans. Instead, the US should focus on producing energy from fossil fuels in the cleanest way possible while ramping up renewable energy production. This all-of-the-above approach aims to balance reliability, affordability, abundance and cleanliness.

Divesting from the fossil fuel industry would devastate America's energy security and ruin communities economically. Fossil fuels are the lifeblood of Houston, the largest city in Texas, generating over $450 billion for the state's economy. The fact that the second-largest oil and gas economy in America is California further proves that divesting from fossil fuels is unrealistic, even for blue states. A shift from fossil fuels to renewables would harm local communities and the nation's energy security. Clean energy is a priority, but it should not come at the expense of economic prosperity and American energy dominance.

Fox News: ‘1923’ costume designer says Harrison Ford had more than 50 hats created for hit show
‘1923’ costume designer says Harrison Ford had more than 50 hats created for hit show
Janie Bryant, Emmy Award-winning costume designer, talks about creating the historic look for "1923" stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Bryant had to create nearly 50 hats for Ford before finding one suitable for his character, Jacob. She and Mirren also had a "total" alignment when creating the costume for Mirren's character, Cara, who Bryant wanted to represent a different era. Despite the challenges of creating period pieces, Bryant enjoys the process of designing costumes. The "1923" exhibit at the Paley Museum in New York City showcasing Bryant's designs will be available for viewing until May 28.
