The American Spectator: Left, Right, and Center Agree Big Government Doesn’t Work
Left, Right, and Center Agree Big Government Doesn’t Work
Government Executive expert Donald F. Kettl has criticized the Heritage Foundation’s Mandate for Leadership 2025 on government reform. Kettl agrees with the Foundation that there are problems with the American civil service ideal, claiming that it is due to the progressive idea of unelected experts promoting the general welfare. The Heritage Foundation believes that the Constitution cannot handle progressive politics, and Kettl warns that this point has created a powerful conservative movement which challenges good government through the merit system.

The Brookings Institution has published a report on “What Americans still want from government reform,” outlining that although only 23% believe that the national government performs well, both parties are split between preferring a larger and smaller government. Only 19% of Democrats are big government supporters, and support for President Biden is very low. Meanwhile, Republican support is at 44% for major changes towards smaller government. Light concludes that expanding the rebuilders (big government with reforms) is essential for future Democrat success. The data provides a warning to the right not to move too far towards small government.

Moulton: 'Awful Lot of Democrats' Will 'Do Whatever the President Says' on Debt Limit
Rep. Seth Moulton won't necessarily vote for whatever debt ceiling deal Biden agrees to. However, he suggests that many Democrats will simply do whatever the President says, potentially enough to get the deal passed.

The American Spectator: There Must Not Be Another Bakhmut
There Must Not Be Another Bakhmut
Bakhmut falls in Ukraine's long-standing war, after a political hype that Ukraine could not fulfill. Though a turning point, the city was insignificant in the grand scheme of things and not worth the Ukrainian investment. Russia celebrates while critics accuse Ukraine's president of hypocrisy for investing in Bakhmut's strategic value while now downplaying its significance. Ukraine needs to focus on tactical and operational victories to justify continued international aid and avoid wasting resources in urban battles.

Deputy Treasury Sec'y: Biden's 'a No' on Using 14th Amendment to Raise Debt Limit, It 'Can't Solve our Challenges Now'
Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo told CNN that Congress needs to raise the debt limit to address the nation's financial issues. President Biden will not invoke the 14th Amendment to solve the problem, as it is not a viable solution. The only effective plan is for Congress to raise the debt limit, as it has done 78 times before, in order to meet the country's obligations to its creditors and citizens. There is no backup plan, and the President is urging Congress to act quickly.

Hakeem Jeffries: 'Extreme MAGA' GOP Trying to Crash Economy for 'Political Benefit in 2024'
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accuses extreme MAGA Republicans of wanting to crash the economy to gain a political advantage in 2024. He expresses hope for a bipartisan agreement to avoid a default crisis, blaming reckless rhetoric for driving the nation towards its first-ever default. Jeffries also dismisses the notion of work requirements as a serious proposal.

He helped others escape the vessel and was later a pilot who survived being shot down twice. Conter is eager to return to Pearl Harbor, where he has not been to the annual remembrance in about four years due to his physician's orders.

Kim Cattrall On Cigars With De Niro And ‘About My Father’
Kim Cattrall and Robert De Niro appear in Lionsgate's About My Father, playing Tigger and Salvo, respectively, in their first scenes in a film together. At the premiere in Chicago, David Rasche called Cattrall "really fun to work with" and praised the experience as a "total fun fest." The film is written and directed by Laura Terruso and tells the story of the family's bond.

Cattrall had fun filming with De Niro, particularly the cigar scene, which she called "really fun to film," and commentary on director Terruso's approach that "it felt like a very cooperative experience - which I think is what improv is." Cattrall appreciated the humor in the film and its reflection of Sebastian's funny brand. The actress also commented on the importance of storytelling in great filmmaking, saying that it allowed the audience to root for every character, adding that every role, excluding day players, has a significant role to play to make the story strong.

The American Spectator: Who Let Roderick Spode Edit Jeeves?
Who Let Roderick Spode Edit Jeeves?
Penguin Random House has come under fire for hiring "sensitivity readers" to remove offensive language from P.G. Wodehouse's books, almost nine decades after they were written. The publisher focused on Wodehouse's use of the N-word in 'Right Ho, Jeeves' and 'Thank You, Jeeves', which appears as part of a reference to minstrel shows featuring white performers in blackface. Critics argue the changes could spur the secondhand book market or encourage readers to explore older, original texts. The publisher's decision to hire similar editors has also been employed in Roald Dahl's work.

Critics have accused Penguin Random House of damaging the otherwise sacrosanct works of P.G. Wodehouse by declaring certain language offensive several decades after their original publication. The publisher used "sensitivity readers" to remove a reference to minstrel shows and the word "n*****" from Wodehouse's work. The move has sparked debate surrounding responsibility and ownership of artistic works, with preservationists urging others to buy original copies of the books as a way of retaining the original language.

Laura Terruso On Directing New Sebastian Maniscalco Comedy ‘About My Father’
A new Lionsgate comedy About My Father directed by Laura Terruso is hitting all theaters. The film is directed by Laura Terruso from a screenplay co-written by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and Austen Earl. About My Father revolves around family and acceptance as cultures clash. Robert De Niro plays Salvo, a hair stylist raising a family in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Laura Terruso was initially excited when she read Sebastian and Austin's screenplay for About My Father as it focused on Sebastian's relationship with his father which she found relatable. Terruso ensures the authenticity is maintained throughout the comedy. Storytelling is everything for Terruso, she wanted to make a film that was reminiscent of the films that made her want to be a director which were character-driven and authentic.

High School Forced To Postpone Graduation Ceremony After Grim Eligibility Discovery
Marlin High School in Texas has postponed its graduation ceremony from May to June because only 15% of the senior class is eligible to graduate. Attendance records and grades are two factors keeping the 28 students from graduating, while others blame the administration for failing its pupils. The school is offering its students an extra month to accomplish what should have been achieved during their four years of study, after an audit found them ineligible to obtain a diploma. The district hopes to convert to a four-day school week, under a plan adopted last month.
